OXFORD. Inq. taken at Bampton, 20 November, 44 Edward III.
Bampton. 20l. rent, held of the heir of Hugh de Plescy, then a minor in the king’s wardship, by knight’s service, and issuing from lands &c. held for life by John Walkere and Alice his wife by demise of the said Thomas, to whose heir the reversion belongs.
He died on 22 July, 35 Edward III. Thomas de Meaux, son and heir of John his son and heir, aged 21 years on 29 January last, is his heir.
Richard de Pembrugg has had possession of the rent since his death by the king’s grant.

DERBY. Inq. (indented) taken at Chapel en le Frith (Capella in Pecko), Monday after St. Wilfrid, 44 Edward III.
Meluer. A messuage and half a bovate of land, held of the king in chief for life, of the inheritance of Emma his wife, by bodily service, to wit, keeping the ward of the forest of Longedendale, and by rendering 18d. yearly to the king at his castle of High Peak.
He died at Meluer on Friday after St. Martin, 43 Edward III. Robert, Emma’s son, aged 6 years and more, is his heir.

40. JOHN MALWAYN.
Writ of precipimus, Claryndon, 11 August, 44 Edward III.
WILTS. Inq. made at Cherlhamstrete by Hungreford, 15 September, 44 Edward III.
Westgrafton. A messuage and 80a. land, held of the king in chief by service of keeping the bailiwick of the forestership of Suthgrove in the forest of Savernak, and by service of paying 10s. yearly by the hands of the constable of the castle of Merlebergh. He was seised in his demesne as of fee of the said bailiwick.
He died on 24 June, 35 Edward III. John Malwayn, his son, aged 27 years and more, is his heir.
Helmyng Leget had possession of the lands from the time of his death until the lawful age of his heir by the king’s grant. The king has had possession of the bailiwick by the hands of the keeper of the said forest since his death, because the heir has not prosecuted his right thereto.

KENT. Inq. (indented) taken at Frenyngham, Monday after Ascension day, 44 Edward III. (Fourteen jurors.)
Maplescombe. 30a. underwood and the advowson of the church; and a rent of 42s. 6d. yearly from Richard atte Wode for some lands &c. whereof he long ago enfeoffed Laurence atte Wode, whose son and heir the said Richard is, to hold to him and the heirs of his body. All the premises are held of the heir of Robert de Northwode, knight, as of his manor of Northcraye, by knight’s service.
The said John died on 19 May, 39 Edward III. John Malmayns, aged 50 years and more, is his kinsman and heir.
Since his death the king has had possession of the said lands, underwood and rent, and has received the profits thereof by the hands of his escheators, as the jurors understand, by what title the jurors know not.

DEVON. Inq. taken at Toriton, Thursday the eve of All Saints, 44 Edward III.
Chepyngtoriton. The castle, in which there is a messuage, with the advowson of the church, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Chepyngtoriton. Two-thirds of five-sixths of the manor and town (extent given, including a fishery in the river Torigh), held of the king in chief by service of 3 knights’ fees; a fifth part of the same manor and town, held jointly with William Bockbrigge, clerk, and Matthew Stowille, knight, by feoffment of Thomas Cheyne made with the king’s licence to them and the heirs of Richard, of the king in chief by service of a fifth part of 3 knights’ fees; and 13s. 4d. yearly rent, held of James Daudelegh by service of a twentieth part of a knight’s fee, and held by James of the king by knight’s service.
He died on Wednesday before Michaelmas, 44 Edward III. Eleanor wife of Matthew de Stowille, knight, aged 19 years and more, Joan wife of John Baunfile, aged 16 years and more, and Agnes, who will be 14 years of age on the feast of St. Katharine next, his daughters by Margery formerly his wife, are his next heirs. Maud his wife is with child.
Writ to the escheator to assign to Maud late the wife of the said Richard her dower of the lands of her late husband, after taking her oath not to marry without licence. 10 November, 44 Edward III.

Chepyngtoriton. Premises as in the first inquisition above.
Date of death and heirs as above. Agnes his daughter by Maud his last wife, aged 1 month and more, is also an heir.
Since his death Thomas Stanes has had possession of two-thirds, and the said Maud of one-third, of the aforesaid two-thirds of five-sixths of the manor and town, together with the issues thereof, by the king’s writs directed to the escheator. William Bockbrigge and Matthew Stowille have had possession of the above-mentioned fifth part, together with the issues.
Writ to the escheator to assign to Maud late the wife of the said Richard her dower of the knights’ fees and advowsons of her said husband. The assignment is to be made in the presence of the heirs and coparceners of the inheritance, and of Thomas Stanes, to whom the king has committed the custody of certain lands of the inheritance. 3 July, 45 Edward III.

43. JOHN DE NORTON.

SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Aulton, 12 November, 44 Edward III.
Nottele and Tystede. The manors, held of the king in chief by knight’s service. On Saturday before the Annunciation, 44 Edward III, he enfeoffed Hamon, rector of the church of Fynchampstede, of the said manors, as is more fully contained in a charter shewn to the jurors, without the king’s licence, on condition that the said Hamon should thereof re-enfeoff him and Alice his wife, who survives, and his heirs. The manor of Nottele is charged with 15s. 9 1/2d. yearly to the lord of the manor of Worldham.
Lyndewode, Rokeford and Iwode in the New Forest. A moiety of a messuage, 40a. land, 8a. meadow and 8s. rent, held as of the right and inheritance of Felicia his mother, a daughter and heir of Edmund de Kendale, knight.
Imbeshote. 15s. rent.
Haukle. 5s. rent.
He enfeoffed the same Hamon and William Upton of the above moiety and rents without licence, as appears in another charter of the same date shewn to the jurors, on condition that they should grant them to Agnes, his daughter, for life, with remainder to Katharine, his second daughter, for life, and with remainder over to his own right heirs.
He held the other moiety of the premises in Lyndewode, Rokeford and Iwode without title, as the right thereto descended to Margaret the other daughter and heir of the said Edmund, wife of William de Morers, knight, who is 24 years of age and more and still living. Both moieties together are held of the king in chief in socage, as of his manor of Lyndhurst, by service of 18d. yearly; and the whole is charged with 6s. 9d. and 1lb. cummin yearly to divers other lords.
Date of death unknown, as he died in parts beyond seas. John de Norton, his son, aged 3 years and more, is his heir.
Copy of indenture made between the said John of the one part, and the said Hamon, William Froille, and William Upton of the other part, agreeing that, whereas he has granted to them all his lands in co. Southampton and elsewhere, as appears by other charters, they shall give full seisin thereof as follows:—to him, Alice his wife, and his heirs, all his lands &c. in Nuttele and Tistede; to Robert Clere of Emelesworth, when he shall have discharged him of a statute merchant made to Margaret de Ravenesholm, all his lands &c. in West Thornee, which otherwise shall remain to himself and his heirs and assigns; to Joan his sister, for life, all his lands &c. at La Sparre, with remainder to himself and his heirs and assigns; to Agnes his daughter, for life, all his lands &c. in Ymbeshote, Haucle, Lyndewode, Rokeford and Iwode, with remainder to Katharine his daughter for life, and afterwards to his right heirs; and to Margaret his daughter, for life, all his lands &c. in Ymbeham, with remainder to Mary his daughter for life, and afterwards to himself and his heirs and assigns. Aleynesmore. The manor (extent given), held of John Trillek, then bishop of Hereford, by knight’s service.
Wylynhale. The hamlet (extent given), held of James le Botiller, earl of Ormond, by knight’s service.
Tregget in the march of Wales. The manor, held of John Bromwych, knight, by service of socage.
Thomas died on 6 January, 31 Edward III. Juliana his daughter, aged 12 years on 14 June last, is his heir.
Mabel, late the wife of John Rous, knight, had possession of all the premises for four years from the death of Thomas by his demise. Thereafter Richard de Penbrugg, knight, had possession of the manor of Aleynesmore by grant of the king by reason of the minority of John, son and heir of the said Thomas, who was in the king’s wardship by reason of the voidance of the bishopric of Hereford by the death of John Trillek, until 31 August last, when the said heir died. Immediately after the heir’s death William Auncell, the escheator, took the manor into the king’s hand by reason of the minority of Juliana, the heir’s sister and heir, and by reason of the voidance of the bishopric of Hereford by the death of Lewis de Cherleton, and has to answer for the issues. James, earl of Ormond, has had possession of the hamlet of Wylynhale from the end of the said four years until now by reason of the minority of the heirs aforesaid.

YORK. Inq. taken at Pokelyngton, Thursday in the fifth week of Lent, 44 Edward III.
Baynton. A moiety of a messuage and of a dilapidated windmill, and 25 1/2 cottages and 39 bovates of land, held of the heir of John de Moubray, a minor in the king’s wardship, as of the manor of Thresk, by homage and fealty and service of a moiety of a knight’s fee.
Askham Bryan. A toft and 48a. land, held of the duke of Lancaster, as of the honor of Richemund, by payment of 7d. yearly to the castle and honor aforesaid.
He died on Friday in the second week of Lent last. Thomas his son, aged 22 years and more, is his heir.

LINCOLN. Inq. taken at Boston, Thursday before St. Dunstan, 44 Edward III.
Byker. A moiety of the manor, which extends into Byker, Swynesheved, Donyngton and Sotterton, held of John, duke of Lancaster, as of the honor of Richemund, by service of 2s. 11d. yearly for ward of the castle of Richemund.

NOTTINGHAM. Inq. taken at Byngham, Thursday after St. Thomas (?), 44 Edward III.
Staunton. The manor, with appurtenances in Staunton, Kilvyngton, Alverton, Flaubergh and Dalyngton, held of Thomas de Ros, lord of Hamelack, by knight’s service.
Heileston (Eyleston). The manor, held of the honor of Tykil by knight’s service; and 2 carucates of land, one held of the king in chief by the foreign service, but the tenure of the other is not known.
Elizabeth daughter of William de Staunton, aged 9 years, is his heir.
Since his death on Monday after the quinzaine of Michaelmas last Thomas his son has had possession of the premises, by what title the jurors know not.

NOTTINGHAM. Inq. (indented) taken at Newerk, Friday before the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 44 Edward III.
Staunton. The manor, with appurtenances as above, and the advowsons of the churches of Staunton and Kylvyngton.
Eyleston. The manor, with a messuage and a carucate of land.
Held for life by grant of John de Aslacton, parson of the church of Bryggeford atte Bryggend, and Peter de Retherby, parson of the church of Staunton, with remainder to Thomas de Staunton and the heirs male of his body.
The manors are held as in the last inquisition. The messuage and carucate are held of the heirs of Walter de Evermewe, service not known.

Writ to the sheriff, reciting the above two inquisitions and ordering him to warn William Gamboun, to whom the king by letters patent dated 25 June last granted the custody of the premises and the marriage of Elizabeth in accordance with the finding of the first inquisition, to be before the king in the Chancery on Monday after St. Laurence next to shew cause why the said letters should not be revoked and the premises be restored to Thomas de Staunton in accordance with the finding of the second inquisition. 8 July, 44 Edward III.

La Sete. The manor, held of the said heir jointly with Agnes his wife, who survives, by gift and feoffment of John son of John de Whitton and John de Coxhale to them and the heirs of their bodies, by service of a clove.
He died on 29 June, 43 Edward III. William his son, aged 10 years last Michaelmas, is his heir.

51. THOMAS SON AND HEIR OF SWAYN DE DERLAY, a minor.
Writ of devenerunt, 15 May, 44 Edward III.
WESTMORELAND. Inq. taken at Kirkeby in Kendale, Saturday before the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 44 Edward III.
Stirkelandketel. A messuage and about 40a. land and waste called ‘Likbergh’ in Kendale came to the king’s hand because Swayn, father of Thomas, held them of the fees of William de Cuucy, knight, by homage and suit to the court of Kirkeby in Kendale every three weeks, and by service of rendering 8d. yearly; and the king has received the issues since Swayn’s death by reason of the minority of Thomas and because the said fees were then in the king’s hand. The premises are now held by the same service of Joan de Couplande, because the king, in 29 Edward III as the jurors understand, alienated all the lands, fees and advowsons of the said William to John de Couplande and Joan, his wife, for life.
Thomas died on Michaelmas day last. Roger son of Thomas de Derlay, aged 40 years and more, is his heir.
Writ of precipimus, 6 July, 45 Edward III.
WESTMORELAND. Inq. taken at Kirkeby in Kendale, 18 July, 45 Edward III, in the same terms as above, except that he is said to have died a minor and unmarried, and Roger is described as his uncle, brother of Swayn his father.

52. ADAM DE SHARESHULL.

OXFORD. Inq. taken at Chepyngenorton, 21 March, 44 Edward III.
Lynham. A messuage and 2 carucates of land, held of John Murye for life by service of a third part of a knight’s fee.
Ascote. A messuage and 2 carucates of land, held in like manner of John Katermayn by service of a third part of a knight’s fee.
He died on 17 January last. John Fyenlys, the king’s ward, aged 13 years and more, is his heir.

OXFORD. Inq. taken at Oxford, 27 May, 44 Edward III.
Lynham. The manor, held of John Murye by knight’s service.
Escote. The manor, held of the bishop of Lincoln by knight’s service.
Joan de Fienlys, late the wife of John de Fienlys, held the above manors in demesne as of fee, and was married to Adam de Shareshull. By a fine levied in the king’s court Adam and Joan granted the manors to John de Shareshull, parson of the church of Wyrardesbury, and John le Moigne, who in the same court re-granted the same to them and the heirs of Joan. Adam survived Joan and held the manors for life, and the reversion after his death descended to William de Fienlys, son and heir of John de Fienlys son and heir of the said Joan. The said William granted his reversion to Richard de Chyderle, clerk, and John Cramphorn, to whom Adam attorned. After the death of John Cramphorn the said Richard granted the reversion to the said William de Fienlys and Joan his wife and the heirs of William, and Adam attorned to William and Joan. William is dead, and the reversion ought to fall to Joan, who is now the wife of Stephen de Valence, for her life, and after her death to John son and heir of the said William, who is a minor aged 13 years and more in the king’s wardship, and his heirs.
Adam died on 17 January last.
Since his death William Hervy has had possession of the manor of Lynham, and William Gambon of the manor of Escote, by the king’s grant.

53. ISOLDA SEYNTPIERE.

SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Basyngestoke, 16 April, 44 Edward III.
Kyngesworthy. The manor, held for life in joint feoffment with William Inge, her late husband, with reversion to his heirs, of the king in chief by service of a pair of gilt spurs or 6d.
She died on 3 April last. William la Zouche, lord of Haryngeworth, aged 30 years and more, son and heir of Joan la Zouche, daughter and heir of the said William Inge, is her heir.

BEDFORD. Inq. taken at Dunstaple, 18 April, 44 Edward III.
Weston. The manor (extent given). Master Robert Inge gave the manor with the king’s licence to William Inge, Isolda his wife, and Fremund Inge, and the heirs to be begotten between William and Isolda, with remainder to the right heirs of William. William died without issue by Isolda, and Fremund died in her lifetime. She held the manor on the day of her death of the king in chief by the grand serjeanty of appearing before the justices in eyre in the county to do the services due before them.
She died on Tuesday after the Annunciation last. William la Zouche, lord of Haryngworth, aged 40 years and more, is next heir of the said William, to wit, son of Joan his daughter.

CUMBERLAND. Inq. (indented) taken at Penreth, Wednesday before St. John the Baptist, 44 Edward III.
Jonby. The manor, held of John de Kirkton, heir of Gregory Burdon, by homage and fealty, rendering 5s. 3d. for cornage. He was seised thereof by virtue of a feoffment made by John de Lancastre, knight, to Nicholas his father and Ellen his mother and the heirs of their bodies.
He died on the feast of All Saints last. Elizabeth wife of Thomas de Blencou and Joan wife of Walter de Whitlaw are his sisters and heirs, and are 24 years of age and more.

Little Sutton. A messuage, 22a. land and 2a. meadow, held of the king in chief by service of petty serjeanty and by service of rendering 2s. yearly by the hands of the sheriff.
He died on 15 October, 37 Edward III. Immediately after his death his lands &c. were taken into the king’s hand by the escheator by reason of the minority of John his kinsman and heir, son of Hugh his brother. John son of Hugh died a minor and unmarried on 20 September last. William de Herdewyk, aged ……, chaplain, grandson of Isolda one of Geoffrey’s aunts, Richard de Paunteleye, aged 60 years and more, grandson of Agnes, Isolda’s sister, and John Elys of Great Sutton, aged ……, grandson of Alice, Isolda’s other sister, are heirs of the said Geoffrey and John son of Hugh.

Stanwell. The manor, with the advowson of the church, held of the king in chief by service of two knights’ fees.
He died on 2 October, 34 Edward III. Miles his son, aged 16 years and more, is his heir.
For six years after his death the manor was in the possession of Richard de Wyndesore, his father; and from the latter’s death until now the king has had possession on account of the minority of the heir.

BERKS. Inq. made at Neubury, 24 October, 44 Edward III.
Bokhamton and Estbury. A messuage, 200a. land, 2a. meadow, pasture for 8 oxen and 300 sheep, and 10s. rent, held of the king in chief by rendering 5d. yearly for hidage and doing suit every three weeks to the hundred of Chepynglambourne.
He died on 27 August last. John le Warre, knight, his son, aged 25 years and more, is his heir.

Alyngton. The manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service as parcel of the castle of Ewyas Harald in the march of Wales. It was given by John de Claydon, parson of the church of Mamecestre, by a fine levied in the king’s court with the king’s licence, to John son of John son of Sir Roger le Warre and Margaret his wife and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of the said John son of Roger. After the deaths of John son of John, John son of Roger, and Margaret, Roger, son of the said John and Margaret, and kinsman and heir of John son of Roger, entered by virtue of the said fine and died in seisin of such estate in the manor.

LEICESTER. Inq. made at Melton Moubray, Saturday the feast of All Souls, 44 Edward III.
Borstalle. Two-thirds of the manor, held jointly with Eleanor his wife, who survives, by gift of John de Wyke to them and the heirs of their bodies, as appears by his charter, of the duke of Lancaster by knight’s service.
Herdeby. The reversion of the manor, held jointly as above, and by gift as above, of the lord de Ros by knight’s service. One moiety of the manor is now held of him and Eleanor by William Grenle (fn. 2) for life, and the other moiety by Richard de Bathe [for life], (fn. 3) each by service of a rose at Midsummer; so that at the time of his death he and Eleanor had nothing therein but the rents of roses and the reversion.
He died in Gascony on Tuesday after St. Bartholomew, 44 Edward III. Heir as above.

The advowson of the abbey of Dore belongs to the castle. The extent includes a rent of 33s. 4d. for ward of the castle arising from two knights’ fees in Pencombe, co. Hereford, and half a knight’s fee in Combewyche, co. Somerset, held of Roger by Robert de Wyteneye, knight, and a fair held on Sunday after the Nativity of St. John the Baptist.

The manor (extent given), held jointly with Elizabeth his wife, deceased, to them and the heirs of their bodies, by feoffment of Thomas de Wyke and John his son, with remainder to John, his own son, and the heirs of his body, as appears by a fine levied in the king’s court. The manor is held of the archbishop of Canterbury by service of one knight’s fee. The extent includes a park of 60a. with deer.
Flechyng. 6l. rent from divers free tenants, held of Thomas de Camoys by service of a fourth part of a [knight’s] fee.
Fokynton. The manor, held of the duke of Lancaster, as of the honor of Leicester, by knight’s service.

Three years before his death he gave these last two manors to John his son, knight, and Elizabeth, John’s wife, and the heirs of their bodies. Elizabeth is dead without issue by John.

Bloxham. The manor, held jointly with Eleanor his wife by a charter dated at Bronne, Friday the eve of St. Bartholomew, 33 Edward III, whereby John de Collnne, parson of the church of Etton, and William de Sewardby granted the manors of Bloxham and Wodeheved, with the advowsons of the churches of Bloxham and Brygcasterton, (which they had by gift of the said Roger), to Roger and Eleanor and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to Roger’s right heirs.
