231. THOMAS SON AND HEIR OF JOHN DE ARDRES.
Writ to the escheator to take proof of the age of the said Thomas, whose father held by knight’s service of the heir of John Trayle, late a minor in the king’s wardship; and to warn Alan de Risseby, in whose keeping are the lands of his inheritance by the king’s commitment, to be present and show cause why the lands should not be restored to him. 22 April, 46 Edward III.
BEDFORD. Proof of age taken at Bedford, Saturday the eve of Holy Trinity, 46 Edward III.
The jurors (named below) say that Thomas is 21 years of age and more, having been born at Turvey on 9 February, 25 Edward III, and baptized in the church of All Saints there.
John Mauncel knows this because John his son was buried that day in the same church.
Robert Chapman knows because on the Monday following he set up a new barn on his own tenement and broke a finger of his left hand in lifting timber.
Roger Longe knows because on that day he first placed Richard his son, then 7 years of age and now 28 years of age and more, at Bedford school.
Richard de Launden knows because on Tuesday a year afterwards he took to wife Joan, nurse of the said Thomas.
Thomas Mordaunt knows because on that [day?] the cowhouse of John Trilly was burnt with 6 cows therein.
John Curteys knows because on the Thursday following he went barefoot on pilgrimage to Beverley.
Henry Aspele knows because on the Monday following he espoused Christina his wife in the same church.
Thomas Hardy knows because on Sunday a month afterwards he moved his dwelling-place (moram) from Turvey to Stacheden with his goods and chattels.
Henry Smalbon knows because John his son, now 21 1/2 years of age, was born on Saturday 8 weeks after.
William Whytyng knows because John his brother was drowned at Stacheden on Wednesday a fortnight before the birth of Thomas.
Richard Davy knows because he was the bailiff of Thomas’s father at Turvey, and withdrew from the office at Michaelmas following.
Gilbert Reyner knows because William his brother was at that time parish priest of Turvey, and baptized the said Thomas.
Alan de Risseby was warned and was present, but showed no cause why the lands should not be restored to Thomas.

232. EDMUND BROTHER AND HEIR OF JOHN DE SANCTO ANDREA.
Writ to the escheator to take proof of the age of the said Edmund, and to warn William Croiser, knight, and Nicholas Grene, in whose keeping are the lands of his inheritance by the king’s commitment, to be present and show cause why the said lands should not be restored to him. 28 November, 46 Edward III.
Endorsement: The said William and Nicholas were warned by Hugh Warde and John Scot, but they did not appear.
Note of the appointment by the said William and Nicholas of Richard Wanting and John Rome to be their attorneys to oppose delivery of the said lands to Edmund.
NOTTINGHAM. Proof of age made at Notingham, Tuesday after St. Nicholas, 46 Edward III.
John Drapour of Gotham, aged 44 years and more, says that Edmund was born at Gotham and baptized in the church of St. Laurence there on Sunday after the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, 25 Edward III, and was 21 years of age on Sunday after the same feast last past. This the deponent knows because on the eve of St. Andrew, 24 Edward III, he had a son named Walter, who is still living, born at Gotham and baptized in the same church.
John Jonesson of Gotham, aged 46 years and more, agrees and says that on the eve of St. Thomas the Apostle, 24 Edward III, he had a son named Walter, who is still living, born at Gotham and baptized in the same church.
Richard son of Richard de Gotham, aged 50 years and more, agrees and says that on Monday after St. Martin, 25 Edward III, he took to wife Margaret daughter of John de Brademere at Bradmere.
William son of John de Gotham, aged 44 years and more, agrees and says that on Sunday after Michaelmas, 25 Edward III, he purchased a messuage and a bovate of land in Gotham from Richard son of Richard de Gotham at Gotham, and Richard’s charter bears witness.
John Taillour of Gotham, aged 45 years and more, agrees and says that Edmund de Sancto Andrea, fellow-canon of the prior of Newstead in Shirwode, was godfather of the said Edmund the heir, and the deponent was the canon’s servant at the baptism, and was there with him.
Robert Coke of Gotham, aged 47 years and more, agrees and says that on the night of All Saints, 25 Edward III, he was despoiled of all his goods by robbers at Gotham.
Nicholas Styword of Wilford, aged 60 years and more, agrees and says that on Monday after All Saints, 25 Edward III, he took to wife Margery sister of the aforesaid John Drapour at Gotham, who is still living.
Roger Julyan of Wydmerpole, aged 55 years and more, agrees and says that he was then servant of John de Sancto Andrea, knight, Edmund’s father, at Gotham, from whom he departed at Martinmas, 25 Edward III.
John Warde of Wydmerpole, aged 50 years and more, agrees and says that on Monday after St. Luke, 25 Edward III, he took to wife Isabel daughter of John de Barton of Gotham at Gotham.
Robert Hudson of Boney, aged 44 years and more, agrees and says that on the Sunday of the birth he was at Gotham with Walter de Gotham, whose wife Isabel gave birth that day to a daughter named Joan.
John de Hethir of Kynston, aged 46 years and more, agrees and says that on the same Sunday Isabel his wife gave birth to a son named Robert, who is still living.
John Clerk of Brademere, aged 49 years and more, agrees and says that on Sunday after Michaelmas, 25 Edward III, William Clerk of Brademere, his father, died and was buried at Gotham.

233. THOMAS SON AND HEIR OF JOHN CANYNGES AND OF SUSAN HIS WIFE.
Writ to the escheator to take proof of the age of the said Thomas, whose father and mother held by knight’s service of Humphrey de Bohun, earl of Hereford, late a minor in the king’s wardship; and to warn Richard Skargil, in whose keeping are the lands of the heir’s inheritance by the king’s commitment, to appear and show cause why the said lands should not be restored to him. Witnessed by Richard son of Edward prince of Aquitaine and Wales, guardian of England, at Walyngford, 14 September, 46 Edward III.
WILTS. Proof of age (indented) made at Stratton St. Margaret, 20 September, 46 Edward III.
Peter Harald, aged 40 years, Robert Palmere, aged 38 years, Thomas Lyle, aged 50 years, and John Henryes, aged 37 years, say that the said Thomas was born at Stratton St. Margaret and baptized in the parish church there on 23 March, 25 Edward III. They were there with John de Canynges, Thomas’s father, for the making of an agreement between him and William Fitzwaryn, knight, on a dispute between them, of which agreement indentures were made bearing date at Stratton aforesaid on the said 23 March, and the said indentures were found in the keeping of John’s executors.
John Palmere, aged 52 years, agrees and says that he had a son named James who died on that day, and whose obit was written in the missal of the church for a perpetual memorial on the said 23 March.
Richard Gosye, aged 60 years, Nicholas Styne, aged 42 years, Edward Wympel, aged 38 years, and Laurence Horder, aged 36 years, agree and say that on that day they were enfeoffed of certain lands in Stratton St. Margaret, and know by the date of the charter of feoffment.
John Robynes, aged 53 years, and John le Heose, aged 39 years, agree and say that they were with the said John Canynges at Stratton aforesaid on that day, when he was enfeoffed of a messuage, 15a. land and 1a. meadow there, and were witnesses to the charter of feoffment. They know because the charter bears date at Stratton St. Margaret on 23 March in the above year.
John Tokkenham, aged 43 years, agrees and says that he saw Laurence, vicar of the church of St. Margaret of Stratton aforesaid, Thomas Bondy, and Christina Bonde lift the said Thomas from the sacred font.
Thus all the jurors say that Thomas was 21 years of age on 23 March last.
Richard Skargil was warned by John Jordan and William Godchip, but did not appear.

234. KATHARINE LATE THE WIFE OF WILLIAM DE BLESEBY.
Writ to the escheator to assign dower to the said Katharine. 18 April, 46 Edward III (Calendar of Close Rolls, 1369–1374, p. 370).
LINCOLN. Assignment of dower made at Cailesthorp, Monday before St. Barnabas, 46 Edward III.
Cailesthorp manor. The building of the sheepcote, in bad condition and ruinous, in lieu of a third part of all the buildings of the manor. A third part of the site of the manor from the sheepcote to the stank on the east side, together with a third part of the stank on that side. A third part of the garden which abuts on the sheepcote on the east side, with free ingress and egress to the sheepcote in common by the great gates. A third part of the great croft on the east side, with a small croft adjoining on the east side of the garden.

BUCKINGHAM. Inq. taken at Neweportpanel, Friday the morrow of the Ascension, 46 Edward III.
He held no knights’ fees in the county, but he held:—

Writ of mandamus, 18 November, 46 Edward III.
LONDON. Inq. (indented) taken before the mayor, 14 December, 46 Edward III. He died in 35 Edward III, day not known, seised of:—
Parish of St. Nicholas Shambles. A tenement with 2 shops. By his testament proved, proclaimed and enrolled in the husting of London held on Monday the feast of St. Lucy, 35 Edward III, he bequeathed the same, by the name of all that tenement which he had at the corner of Pentecostlane in the said parish, to Emma his wife for life, and after her death to John his son for life, and after the death of Emma and John for the maintenance of a chaplain to celebrate in the said church of St. Nicholas for his soul and the souls of Sir John de Middelton, the said Emma, his parents, and all the faithful departed. John his son died in the lifetime of Emma, who had possession after her husband’s death until 3 years ago, when Richard Bayser, butcher, took her to wife. After her marriage she left London and never returned, and what has become of her, or whether she is still living, the jurors know not. The said Richard has had possession of the tenement ever since by colour of Emma’s estate therein. The premises are held of the king in free burgage, as is the whole city of London.
Robert Langele, chaplain, aged 50 years and more, is Adam’s kinsman and next heir.

237. WILLIAM DE HYNELOND.
Writ of mandamus, 14 November, 46 Edward III.
LONDON. Inq. (indented) taken before the mayor, 1 December, 46 Edward III.
He died on Saturday, the feast of St. Lucy, 45 Edward III. seised of:—
Parish of St. Botolph without Algate. A garden with 3 shops. By his testament proved and enrolled in the husting of London of pleas of land held on Monday before St. Clement, 46 Edward III, he, by the name of William Hynelond, clerk, bequeathed the said garden and shops, by the name of all the lands and tenements in that parish which he lately purchased from Robert Gille, draper, to John Hanekyn, called ‘Porter,’ citizen of London, his heirs and assigns, and the said John has had possession of them ever since.
Parish of St. Olave by the Tower. A messuage and 3 shops in Martelane. By his said testament he bequeathed these, by the name of all his tenements there which he lately had by gift of Henry Petipas, ‘stokfisshmonger,’ to Eustace de Glaston, William Whetele, and John atte Walle, parishioners of the said church of St. Olave, and their successors the parishioners for the time being, to keep every year his anniversary day in the church where he may happen to be buried, to cause fifteen masses to be celebrated yearly in the same church for his soul and the souls aforesaid (sic), to distribute (participare) 2s. 6d. among the poor on the same day, and to pay 6d. for the knell (clascico), 12d. for the dirge, 12d. for lights, and 6d. for saying the psalter. The whole profit of the premises, over and above the reasonable maintenance thereof, he bequeathed for the use of the body of the church of St. Olave and the repair and maintenance of its books and ornaments, and if the parishioners should not perform the above charges, but should fail for a year to keep the anniversary, or should not keep the tenements in proper condition, then the tenements were to remain to the prior and convent of the church of Holy Trinity within Algate, to celebrate and pray for his soul and the souls aforesaid (sic). The said John Hanekyn has had possession of the tenements ever since the death of William, but by what title the jurors know not.
All the premises are held of the king in free burgage, as is the whole city of London.
William son of Richard Hynelond his brother, aged 28 years and more, is his kinsman and next heir.

238. JOHN SEYNT OWEYN.
Writ of precipimus touching the lands &c. held by the said John of the heir of Roger de Mortuo Mari, late earl of March, a minor in the king’s wardship. 18 October, 44 Edward III.
HEREFORD. Inq. (indented) taken at Hereford, 31 March, 45 Edward III.
Gerneston in the fee of Webbeleye. A messuage, 60a. land, 2a. meadow and 6a. wood, held of the said heir by knight’s service.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on 15 October, 35 Edward III. John Seynt Oweyn, his son, aged 23 years on 8 September last, is his heir.
Immediately after his death Philip Luttelee, late escheator, took the premises into the king’s hand on account of the minority of the heir, and received the issues for the king’s use until 27 November, 42 Edward III, when William Auncell received the office of escheator and took possession of the premises, whereof he still receives the issues for the king’s use.

239. ELEANOR COUNTESS OF ARUNDEL.
Writ touching the lands &c. which she held in dower or otherwise for life of the inheritance of John son of Henry son and heir of John de Bello Monte, her late husband. 16 January, 46 Edward III.
MIDDLESEX. Inq. (indented) taken at Totenham, 21 February, 47 Edward III.
She held no lands &c. in the county.

LINCOLN. Inq. (indented) taken at Welburn, Wednesday after St. Peter in Cathedra, 47 Edward III.
Welburn. The manor (extent given), tenure not known. The site of the manor is waste and entirely without buildings. The extent includes 2 carucates of land which are of no value because they have lain untilled for many years on ‘les haythes’ in a sandy and stony place, and are too barren to let at farm; and a water-mill of no net value because no river abounds there except in winter.
Welburn. A messuage and a carucate of land with meadow thereto belonging, held of Richard de Willesford by a yearly rent of 14s. 0 1/2d. and suit of court every three weeks.
She died at Arundell, co. Sussex, on 12 January last. She had no estate in the premises but for life, the reversion belonging to John son and heir of Henry de Bello Monte son and heir of John de Bello Monte, aged 14 years.
LINCOLN. Inq. (indented) taken at Folkyngham, Thursday the feast of St. Matthias, 47 Edward III.
Folkyngham. The castle (extent given), held of the king in chief by knight’s service. The extent includes a wood imparked, a court, and two fairs at the Invention of the Holy Cross and Martinmas.
Barton on Humbre. The manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
John de Bello Monte died in seisin of the premises, and on his death Henry his son and heir, being of full age, entered thereon and granted them with the king’s licence to Richard earl of Arundel and Eleanor his wife for her life, with reversion to himself and his heirs. Thus the countess died in seisin, the reversion belonging to John son and heir of the said Henry, a minor in the king’s wardship.
Billyngburgh. A messuage, 30a. land, 1/2a. meadow and 10s. yearly rent, held for life, with reversion as above, of Edward, prince of Aquitaine and Wales, as of the fee ‘del Haye,’ by the foreign service.
Birthorp. A messuage, a carucate of land and 16s. yearly rent, with meadows and pastures thereto belonging, held in demesne as of fee of the castle of Folkyngham by knight’s service and suit of court every three weeks.
Folkyngham. The advowson of the church, which belongs to the said heir.
The said John son of Henry, aged 14 years, is her kinsman and heir.
Welburn. As the jurors who extended this manor did not know the tenure thereof, the present jurors say that it is held [of the king] (fn. 1) in chief by knight’s service as parcel of the manor of Thoreswey.
LINCOLN. Inq. (indented) taken at Folkyngham, Thursday the feast of St. Matthias, 47 Edward III.
Edenham. The manor (extent given), held for her life of the king in chief by knight’s service in joint feoffment with John de Bello Monte, sometime her husband, the reversion belonging to John son of Henry her son by her said husband, a minor in the king’s wardship.
LINCOLN. Inq. (indented) taken at Lincoln, Friday after St. Chad, 47 Edward III.
Barton on Humbre. The manor (extent given), except 40l. yearly rent therein, held of the king in chief by knight’s service of the inheritance of the aforesaid John son of Henry. The extent includes a market held every Monday, a yearly fair on the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, and a ferry across the water of Humbre. Richard earl of Arundel receives a yearly rent of 40l. from the manor by the king’s grant during the minority of the heir.
Date of death and heir as above. Descent of the manor, with the castle of Folkyngham, as in the last inquisition but one.

BERKS. Inq. made at Abyndon, 7 February, 47 Edward III.
Seukworth. The manor, held in dower of the lands of Henry (recte John) de Bello Monte, formerly her husband, of the abbot of Abyndon in chief by knight’s service, and by rendering to him of 16s. 4d. yearly for ward of the castle of Wyndesore, 5s. for hidage, and 4 bushels of wheat for church-scot (churs’), and by doing suit to the hundred of Berton every three weeks. The tithing of the town presents hue and bloodshed at that hundred; and the lord of the manor does suit to the abbot’s lawful view of Baggelegh, and pays 6d. fixed rent (de certo).
The countess died on (blank) January last.

OXFORD. Inq. taken at Oxford, 8 February, 47 Edward III.
Tackele. The manor, and the advowson of the church alternately with John Nowers, knight, held in dower, as above, of the king in chief by knight’s service. She presented a year ago on an exchange between Peter de Berton, late parson of Tackele, and Master John Lewes, late parson of Duntesfolde, co. Surrey.
She died on 12 January last.

OXFORD. Inq. taken at Wytteneye, 17 June, 49 Edward III.
Takle. The manor, held of Edward prince of Wales, service unknown. Long before her death she held it for life by demise of Henry de Bello Monte, the elder, the reversion belonging to Henry de Bello Monte, his kinsman and heir, to wit, son of John his son; and she and Richard earl of Arundell, who took her to wife, surrendered their estate therein to the said Henry son of John, who afterwards granted the manor to John Lovell, knight, John Charnell, clerk, Henry Hasty, Robert Moraunt, John Whitton, and John Wytham, and their heirs.
BERKS. Inq. taken at Faryndon, 14 June, 49 Edward III.
Seukworth. The manor, held of the abbot of Abyndon, service not known.
She held it as above (last inquisition), and it was surrendered and conveyed in like manner.

He had no lands in the county or in the escheator’s bailiwick.

LINCOLN. Inq. (indented) taken at Crosseby, Friday before St. Gregory, 47 Edward III.
He held no lands at Beltoft or elsewhere of the heir of John de Moubray of Axiholm, a minor in the king’s wardship, or of any other person.
He died at Beltoft on Whit Sunday last. Robert son of Thomas his son, aged 9 years, is his kinsman and heir, but has nothing in the county by hereditary descent.

SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Basyngestoke, 9 February, 47 Edward III.
Shalden. The manor, held in fee tail of the duke of Lancaster by knight’s service, as of his manor of Hertelegh Mauduyt, by reason of a gift lately made by a fine levied in the king’s court by Nicholas de Bosco to Robert de Kendale and Margaret his wife, parents of Edward, and the heirs of their bodies.
Shyrefeld. A messuage, a carucate of land and 14a. meadow, held in form aforesaid of John de Warblyngton by a yearly rent of 3s. 2d.
He died on 6 January last. Edward his son, aged 22 years and more, is his heir.

LONDON. Inq. taken before the mayor, 18 February, 47 Edward III.
Parish of All Hallows the Less in the Ropery. A cellar, part of which has houses built on it adjoining the church, the other part being under the church.
Parish and lane of St. Nicholas Hacon. A tenement by Candelwikestret.
Parish of St. Mary of Abbechirche. Two shops with solars built over them; and a tenement.
All held of the king in free burgage, as is the whole city of London.
He died on Thursday the feast of the Epiphany last. Heir as above, aged 24 years and more.

The manor of Wodecroft (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of a sixth part of half a knight’s fee; a messuage, 100a. arable, 4a. meadow, 3a. wood and 62s. yearly rent, held of Neel Loryng, knight, by service of rendering 27s. 2 1/2d. yearly; a toft and 6a. arable, held of the hospital of Farle by service of rendering 16d. yearly and two sickles (?) (scias) in autumn, and by suit of court every three [weeks]; 7 cottages, a toft and 14a. arable, held of Hugh atte Spitel, John Turnour, and Agatha Est by service of rendering 2s. yearly to the said Hugh; 2 cottages, held of John Laule, the younger, by service of rendering 2s. yearly; and 3 cottages and 43 1/2a. arable, held of the manor of Luton, which is now in the king’s hand by the idiotcy of William son of Henry de Mortymer son and heir of Hugh Mortymer, knight, by service of rendering to the said manor 8s. 9d. All the premises in Luton he held jointly with Elizabeth his wife, who survives.

Idelstre. 2 messuage, 40a. arable, 2a. meadow and 1a. wood, held of the abbot of St. Albans by service of 26s. 1d. yearly.

Erdele. A toft called ‘le More,’ 100a. arable, 2a. pasture, 4a. wood and a windmill in ruins, similarly held jointly with Elizabeth his wife in fee tail of the dean and chapter of St. Paul’s, London, by service of 15s. 11d. yearly.
Codreth. A toft, 40a. pasture and 20s. yearly rent of free tenants, held jointly with Elizabeth his wife in form aforesaid of Edmund Chene by service of 10s. 4d. yearly.
Flamstede. A moiety of a messuage, 30a. arable and 8s. rent, held jointly with Elizabeth his wife in form aforesaid of Thomas de Bello Campo, earl of Warwick, by service of 2s. 6d. and 1/2 lb. cummin yearly.
Madcroft in Dyneslee Furnival. The manor, held jointly with Elizabeth his wife in form aforesaid of William Furnival, knight, by service of 1d. yearly.

242. RICHARD SON OF WILLIAM DE ROKESLE.
KENT. Inq. taken virtute officii at St. Mary Crey, 18 November, 46 Edward III.
Sandlyng. Reynold de Rokesle held the manor in fee simple of the king in chief by knight’s service as parcel of the fees called ‘Peverel.’ The tenants of the manor with its members used to render every twenty weeks to the castle of Dover 16s. 3d. Reynold died on the first Sunday in Lent, 10 Edward III, and Richard son of William de Rokesle, then 2 years of age and more, was his heir, William de Rokesle having died in the lifetime of his father Reynold. A certain Isabel de Rokesle had possession of the wardship of the said Richard and the custody of the manor, by what title the jurors know not, for two years after Reynold’s death. Afterwards Emery her son had possession of the said wardship and custody for ten years, and then John Rokesle, Emery’s brother, had possession for the next ten years, title not known. Then Richard son of William de Rokesle, being of the full age of 21 years and unmarried, had possession of the manor for ten years as son and heir of William and kinsman and heir of Reynold, and received the issues until Wednesday after St. Gregory, 40 Edward III, when he enfeoffed thereof Richard Northwych of Orpynton in fee simple, who, having had possession for eight days, demised the manor five years ago and more to the said Richard son of William and Alice his wife for their lives, and granted the reversion to Nicholas Bonde, knight, and Beatrice his wife, and the assigns of Nicholas, to whom Richard son of William and Alice attorned.
Richard son of William died on Friday after the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr last. Alice his wife survives.

He died on Thursday before Michaelmas last. William, son of Richard de Sandiacre brother of William the deceased’s father, of full age, is his heir.

He was an idiot from birth and is so still.
Erlstoke. A messuage, 1/2 virgate of land, 1/2a. meadow, and 2 cottages descended to him by inheritance after the death of Roger Justise, his father, on 10 December, 30 Edward III. They are held of John Montagu, knight, by service of 9s. yearly and suit to his court of Erlstoke. Thomas Luk of Erlstoke has had possession of them ever since the said 10 December by demise of John Montagu for a fine of 30s.

Fayntre. A messuage and a carucate of land, held of the king in chief by service of finding a man on foot with a bow and 2 arrows to go with the king in his army as far as Monefordbrugge when there is war in Wales, and by doing suit to the county court of Salop every month.
He died on 20 October last. Eleanor and Margaret, his daughters, are his heirs. Eleanor was 4 years old on 8 January last, and Margaret was 2 years old on 20 March last. Joyce late the wife of the said James claims a third part of the premises by way of dower.

He died on the feast of St. James, 41 Edward III. William Cook, his son, aged 19 years and more, is his heir. Since his death John Noble has received the issues of the premises.
