GLOUCESTER. Inq. taken at Aure, Friday after the Purification, 36 Edward III.
Aure. A messuage, 2 gardens, a carucate of land, 6a. meadow and a water-mill, held of the king in chief by service of being in person (sui corporis essendi) in the king’s chamber wherever the king wills.
He died on Saturday before St. Matthew last. John Aure his brother, aged 22 years and more, is his heir.

232. JOAN LATE THE WIFE OF ROBERT ATTE MORE.
Writ, 18 November, 35 Edward III.
DORSET. Inq. (indented) taken at Sturmynstre Abbatis, Thursday after Christmas, 35 Edward III.
Marnhull. A messuage, a garden, 84a. arable, and 5a. meadow several from the feast of the Purification until the hay is carried, held for life by gift of John Gorwy and Thomas de Blyntesfeld to her and Robert atte More, her late husband, and the heirs of Robert, of the inheritance of Adam de la More, son and heir of the said Robert. The premises are held of the king, as of the manor of Norton Bavent, co. Wilts, which the king lately acquired of Roger de Bavent, by service of an eighth part of a knight’s fee.
Todebere. 8a. land, held for life, as above, of Walter de Thornhull by service of rendering 3d. yearly.
The reversion of all the above belongs to Adam de la More as son and heir of the aforesaid Robert de la More.
She died on Monday after St. Faith last. Adam de la More, aged 30 years and more, is her heir.

233. ROGER DE ASTLEYE, or ASTELEYE.

SALOP. Inq. taken at Bruggenorth, 26 February, 36 Edward III.
Nordeleye. The manor (extent given, including 3 plots of assart called ‘Colieswalle,’ ‘Ariweneswalle,’ and ‘Rugwalle’ containing 4 acres, worth only 1d. an acre because they are charged with 2s. yearly towards the 9l. fee-farm), held of the king in chief at fee-farm by service of 9l. yearly, which sum used to be paid at the Exchequer by the hand of the sheriff but was granted by the king to the deceased for life by letters patent. Some of the lands are uncultivated on account of the past and present pestilences, and the profits of the manor do not suffice for payment of the said 9l.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on Friday after Michaelmas last. Thomas, son of Thomas his son, aged 3 weeks, is his heir.

234. JOHN DE BURNHAM.
Writ to the escheator to enquire as to the lands and heir of the said John, and who has been in possession of his lands since his death and received the issues. 12 November, 35 Edward III.
BUCKINGHAM. Inq. taken at Wycumbe, Tuesday after St. Edmund the King, 36 (sic) Edward III.
(Unspecified.) A messuage, 100a. land, 10a. meadow, 12a. wood, and 3a. pasture, held of Richard de Wyndelesore by homage and fealty and a rent of 20s.
He died about the feast of the Purification, 22 Edward III. Nicholas his son, who was aged 2 years at the time of his death, is his heir.
Richard de Wyndelesore aforesaid has been in possession of the premises since the death of the said John until now, and has received the issues.

LINCOLN. Inq. taken at Waltham, Thursday after the Conversion of St. Paul, 36 Edward III.
Waltham. A croft and a bovate and a fourth part of a bovate of arable land.
Waltham, Belesby, Hatclyf, Fenneby, and Wath. 28l. rents of free tenants.
All held jointly with Philippa his wife by virtue of a fine tail (finis talliati) levied in the king’s court between the said Edward and Philippa, querents, and Guy Bryan, knight, John de Bohun of Midhurst, knight, John Gogh, clerk, and John Seyes, clerk, deforciants. The premises are held of the king in chief by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
Date of death not known. John de Bohun his brother, aged 26 years and more, is his heir.

GLOUCESTER. Inq. taken at Bordonesoldebury, Tuesday before St. Gregory, 36 Edward III.
Oldebury. The manor, held jointly with Agnes his wife, who survives, to them and the heirs of Edmund, of the earl of Salisbury, as of the honor of Trowbrugg, by knight’s service.
He died on Wednesday the feast of St. Michael last. John his son, aged 18 years, is his heir.

DEVON. Inq. taken at Teyngton, Thursday after Ash Wednesday (festum cinerum), 36 Edward III.
Kyngesteyngton. The manor (extent given, including pleas &c. of a moiety of the hundred of Teyngbrige), held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
Date of death as above, ‘at the hour of vespers.’ Heir as above, aged 18 years and more.

WILTS. Inq. made at Salisbury, 7 January, 35 Edward III.
Fougheleston. The manor, held in joint feoffment with Agnes Burdon his wife, who survives, by gift of John de Hengham, vicar of the church of Wermenstre, and John de Langeton, chaplain of the parish church of Wermenstre. The manor is held of the abbess of Wilton by service of suit to the court of ‘la Belhous’ and by knight’s service.
Yatesbury. The manor called ‘la Westcourt,’ with the advowson of the church, held in joint feoffment, as above, by gift of Patrick de Frene, rector of the church of Yatesbury, and John, vicar of the same church. The manor is held of the earl of Salisbury by knight’s service.
Paulesholte. The manor, held of the earl of Arundel by knight’s service. Long before his death he demised the said manor for life to Nicholas atte Borgh and Margaret his wife, Richard atte Borgh, Hugh atte Celere of Paulesholte, John atte Slogh, and Margery his wife, who still survive, by an indenture dated at Cotes, 30 December (sic), to wit, the morrow of Michaelmas, 33 Edward III, for a yearly rent of 20 marks for the first six years after the said Michaelmas, and 20l. a year thereafter. The reversion belongs to John son and heir of the deceased.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.

Assignment of dower to Agnes late the wife of Edmund Burdon in Teinton Regis and Burdonyswere, reciting a writ of 2 April, 36 Edward III, directing the assignment to be made, the king having commanded that her oath not to marry &c. should be received by the escheator in co. Wilts. The assignment gives field names and names of tenants, and includes a third part of the view of frankpledge, and a third part of the pleas &c. of the court of Teynton Regis and the hundred of Teynghebrigg.

237. ALICE LATE THE WIFE OF THOMAS BOSON of Wodeford.

NORTHAMPTON. Inq. (indented) taken at Wodford, 3 January, 36 (sic) Edward III.
Wodford. Two parts of a manor, held for life jointly with the said Thomas her late husband, a portion (extent given) of the abbot of Peterborough by knight’s service and the service of rendering 5s. 6d. to the abbot for sheriff’s aid, and the rest (extent given, including 5 virgates in demesne each containing 18a., and a watermill let for 40s. a year) of Maud one of the daughters and heirs of Henry late duke of Lancaster, as of the honor of Gloucester, by knight’s service.
Denford and Thrappeston. 4l. rent of free tenants, held jointly as above of the same Maud by the abovesaid service.
All the above are charged with 20l. payable yearly to Adam Fraunceys and John Pyel, citizen of London, and their heirs.
She held no other lands &c. in the county.
She died on Sunday the eve of All Saints last while the abbey of Peterborough was vacant. Henry Busoun, aged 15 years and more at Michaelmas last, is son and heir of the said Thomas and Alice.

238. MAUD LATE THE WIFE OF ROGER DE CHAUNDOS.

HEREFORD. Inq. taken at Hereford, 19 February, 36 Edward III.
Welynton. The manor (extent given, including a herbage called ‘Cowheye’ and a wood called ‘Chaundoswode’), held of the king in chief, as parcel of the barony of Snodhull, in fee tail by grant of Master Thomas Chaundos to her and Roger Chaundos, her late husband, and the heirs male of their bodies.
She died on the feast of the Assumption last. Thomas Chaundos, knight, son and heir of Roger Chaundos, is the son and heir male begotten by the said Roger Chaundos of her body, and is 30 years of age and more.

239. HENRY COSYN.
Writ, 8 October, 35 Edward III.
ESSEX. Inq. taken at Pritewelle, Friday after All Saints, 36 (sic) Edward III.
Great Sutton. Thomas de Apynton, rector of the church of Great Sutton, was seised of the manor and the advowson of the church by gift of William Cosyn. He by his charter enfeoffed the same William Cosyn thereof for life, with remainder to Peter his son, and Emma and Juliana daughters of Peter, and the heirs of their bodies, and failing such heirs to the right heirs of the said William and Beatrice, his wife. William died seised, and after his death Peter, Emma and Juliana entered; the two latter died without heir of their bodies, and Peter held the entire premises and had issue Henry his son. After Peter’s death Henry entered and died seised without heir of his body. William Cosyn is son and heir of the aforesaid William and Beatrice, and is 30 years of age and more. The premises are held of the king, as of the honor of Reilegh, by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee, suit to the hundred of Rochefford every three weeks, and suit to the court of the honor of Reillegh every month.
Estwode. 5a. land, held of John de Pritewell and Joan, his wife, by service of 1d. yearly. Heir not known.
He died on Saturday after Michaelmas, 35 Edward III.

240. JOHN DE COBHAM of Rundale.
Writ, 14 November, 35 Edward III.
KENT. Inq. (indented) taken at Maidenstan, 22 March, 36 Edward III.
Ovenhull in Boxle. Tenements comprising a ruined messuage, 12a. arable, dry and sandy, 22a. several pasture for sheep, 7a. meadow in a dry place and only fit to cut in a wet season (tempore aquoso), and common after cutting, 13s. 4d. rent of free tenants, rent of 2 hens at Christmas, and perquisites of court worth only 12d. because most of the tenants do not owe suit. The premises are held of the king in chief by service of providing for the king in every Welsh war a horse worth 5s., a bag worth 6d., and a pin (broch’) worth 1/2d. at the king’s costs. (fn. 1)
He died 14 September, 35 Edward III. Thomas de Cobham his son, aged 19 years, is his heir.
Alyngton. The castle &c. (extent given), held of the heir of John de Kirkeby, a minor in the wardship of the archbishop of Canterbury, by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee and by rendering 2s. yearly. The extent includes 100a. wood called ‘le Park,’ and a rent of 3 ploughshares at Christmas.
Roundale. The manor (extent given), held of John de Northwode, knight, by service of rendering 26s. 8d. yearly to him and 40s. yearly at Michaelmas to the abbess of Fontévrault (de Fonte Everard’).
Hevere. The manor, held of the archbishop of Canterbury, as of his manor of Otteford, by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee.
Preston. Tenements worth 40s. yearly, held of the prince of Wales in right of his wife, service not. known.

Alston. He held nothing of the king in chief or of any other at the time of his death, because long before then he demised his manor of Alston, held of Richard Cogan, knight, by knight’s service, to John Baunton, John atte Vyne, clerk, and John Scorteford, clerk, and their heirs.
He died on 2 July last. Heir not known, because he has none in the county begotten of himself.

243. JOHN DE LA BERE.

SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. made at Fordyngbrigg, 6 April, 36 Edward III.
(Unspecified.) 4 messuages, 40a. arable, 20a. waste in common, and 2a. wood, held of the king in chief by service of paying 3s. yearly at the king’s manor of Lyndherst.
Yerdle. A messuage, 60a. arable and 3a. wood, held of Richard de Wyndesore by knight’s service, amount not known.
Ibbesle. A messuage and 1 1/2 carucates of land, held in joint feoffment with Margery his wife, who survives, by gift of Sir John Carpenter, chaplain, and John de la Bere, son of the deceased, to them and the heirs of John. The premises are held of Richard de Penbrigg, knight, and Elizabeth his wife, as of the dower of Elizabeth, of the barony of Seintjon by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee. The 1 1/2 carucates contain 140a. arable, and there are 10a. meadow, the pasture of which is common after mowing, and 4a. wood, the pasture of which is common. He also had common of pasture in the New Forest for himself and his tenants for all their beasts of Lyndwode and Ibbesle by grant of the king’s progenitors, divers tenants rendering 20s. yearly, and pleas &c. of court worth 3s. 4d. yearly.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on the feast of the Invention of the Holy Cross, 33 Edward III. Maud daughter and heir of John Pounchardoun the son and heir of Sibyl daughter and co-heir of the deceased, aged 5 years and more, and Joan and Christina, daughters and co-heirs of John Ernys the son and heir of Katharine the other daughter and co-heir of the deceased, aged 3 years and more and 1 year and more respectively, are his heirs.
Thomas son of the deceased, aged 40 years, who died on 22 September last about the hour of noon, made a charter of feoffment of all the lands &c. in Ibbesle about half an hour before prime (circa medietatem hore prime) of the same day to the aforesaid Margery and Oliver Pounchardoun, then her husband, and the heirs of the said Oliver, but there was no delivery of seisin. The last wish of Thomas was to make them a good estate of the premises. Afterwards Oliver and Margery enfeoffed one William Brynkeworth of the said lands &c., who re-enfeoffed them and the heirs of Oliver to the disherison of the aforesaid Maud, Joan and Christina, the heirs of John de la Bere deceased, and contrary to the form of the first feoffment made to Margery for her life.

SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. made at Meonestoke, 24 September, 36 Edward III.
Bourhont Herbelyn by Southwyk. Two days (penultimo die) before his death the deceased made a conditional feoffment to John de Scures, knight, Roger de Engelfeld, Thomas de Welhop, Simon atte Mede and others of a messuage, a carucate of arable, 10a. meadow, 12a. pasture and 34s. rent, with a court the pleas of which are worth 12d. yearly, without the king’s licence, the premises being held of the king in chief by the grand serjeanty of providing an armed man for forty days at his own costs for the keeping of the castle of Porchestre in time of war; seisin to be given to the feoffees on condition that they should appropriate the premises to the prior and convent of Southwyk.
He died on Wednesday before St. Luke, 35 Edward III. Edmund, son of Robert Danvers, son of Edmund Danvers brother of the deceased, aged 16 years and more, is his heir.

Edyngdon. The hamlet, held in fee tail to him and the heirs of his body, for a fourth part of a knight’s fee, of the heir of John Malet, a minor in the wardship of the executors of Margaret late the wife of John de Beauchamp of Somerset, whose fees are in the king’s custody by reason of the death of the said Margaret and the minority of the heir of the said John de Beauchamp of Somerset, son of the said Margaret.
Esttoukeswell. The hamlet, held of John Fitz James, as of his hamlet of Wyk, by service of rendering 17s. yearly. It is charged in 13 1/2d. yearly to Robert Fitz Payn.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on 26 November last. Thomas de Edyngdon his brother, aged 17 years and more, is his heir. Joan his wife survives.

A messuage, a water-mill, 60a. arable, 6a. meadow and 10s. rent, held of the king in chief by serjeanty of keeping a goshawk (osturium), which is now commuted for a service of 20s. a year; and 80a. arable and 6a. meadow, held of Thomas de Herford, knight, Robert Bustler, knight, William Bevereche and the heirs of John Sauston by homage and fealty.
He died on the feast of the Conception of the Virgin Mary, 35 Edward III. Alice the wife of Richard Gerounde, and Marion, his sisters, both 30 years of age and more, are his heirs.

A messuage and dovecot, 2 carucates of land, 10a. meadow common after the hay until the Purification, 26s. 8d. rent of free tenants, and a court worth 12d. yearly, held in chief of the inheritance of John son and heir of Laurence de Hastynges, late earl of Pembroke, a minor in the king’s wardship, by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on 20 November last. Bartholomew his son, aged 15 years, is his heir.

WESTMORLAND. Inq. taken at Overton, 1 June, 36 Edward III.
Farlton in Kendale. The hamlet (extent given), held of Sir Ralph de Bettham by homage and fealty and 26s. 8d. yearly for cornage. The extent includes a close called ‘Ullerfrith’ with a fulling-mill therein.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on 1 August, 33 Edward III. Robert, his son and heir, held the hamlet and died about the feast of the Purification, 35 Edward III. Since his death the aforesaid Ralph has been in possession. Nicholas de Harynton, son of the said John, aged 16 years, is his heir.
YORK. Inq. taken at Burton in Lonesdale, 20 December, 35 Edward III.
Dente and Sadbergh. Tenements in the hands of tenants at will rendering 20s. yearly, held of Henry son of Henry Fiz Hugh by fealty and service of 1d. yearly at Christmas.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
Date of death as above. Robert, as above, entered and held the premises all his life. After his death on Sunday before the Purification, 35 Edward III, Nicholas de Harynton, son of the said John, entered and held the premises, and still holds them. The said Nicholas, aged 16 years and more, is John’s heir.
Thomas de Harynton held no lands &c. in the county at the time of his death.
Writ directing the escheator to take without delay the inquisitions already commanded to be made after the deaths of John de Haryngton and Thomas de Haryngton. 4 February, 36 Edward III.
LANCASTER. Inq. taken at Mamcestre, Tuesday after St. Margaret, 36 Edward III.
John de Harynton of Farleton, knight, held the following in right of Katharine his wife, deceased, of Henry late duke of Lancaster, by homage and fealty and by service of 27s. yearly and doing suit to the county (court) of Lancaster every 6 weeks:—
Burghton. 9l. 12s. rents of tenants at will holding 12 tofts and 12 bovates of land, and 9l. rents of freemen and tenants at will.
Bolton. 10a. land in the hands of tenants at will rendering 5s., rents of free burgesses amounting to 21s. yearly, and a fourth part of a fair held on the eve, the feast and the morrow of St. Margaret.
Neither the said John de Harynton and Katharine, his wife, nor Robert de Harynton, nor Thomas de Harynton, held any other lands &c. in the county except the manor of Farleton in Lonesdale and tenements in Whitinton, Wynmerley, Gersingham, Chorlegh, Hethchernok and Aghton, and a fourth part of the bailiwick of Leylondshire, extended in other inquisitions attached to this.
After the death of John and Katharine Robert, their son and heir, had possession of the premises in Burghton and Bolton and received the issues all his life. After his death in parts beyond seas on Sunday before the Purification, 35 Edward III, Henry late duke of Lancaster had possession; and on his death on 23 March, 35 Edward III, James de Pykeryng, knight, and Henry de Molineux and his wife had possession, and still have.
Nicholas de Harynton, son of John and Katharine, aged 16 1/2 years and more, is heir of the same John and Katharine, and also of Robert de Harynton, of the premises in Burghton and Bolton.
LANCASTER. Inq. taken at Chorlegh, Thursday after St. James, 36 Edward III.
John de Harynton of Farleton held the following in right of Katharine his wife, deceased:—
Chorlegh. 7l. 18s. 8d. rents of freemen and tenants at will, held of William de Lee and Isabel late the wife of John Flemmyg, knight, by homage and fealty and service of 5s. yearly.
Hethchernok. A water-mill and 7l. 4s. rents of freemen and tenants at will, held of Richard de Shirburn, knight, and John de Arderne by service of 2s. yearly and knight’s service.
Leylondshire. A fourth part of the bailiwick of the serjeanty of the wapentake, held of Henry late duke of Lancaster, service not known.
After the death of John and Katharine—John died on 1 August, 33 Edward III, and Katharine a week later—Robert, their son and heir, then of full age, entered the premises and had possession all his life. After his death (as above) without heirs of his body, Henry late duke of Lancaster and James de Pikering, knight, had possession until the death of the duke of Lancaster (as above); on whose death Gilbert de Ines and Isabel late the wife of John Flemmyg, knight, had possession of the premises in Chorlegh, Richard de Shirburn, knight, and Henry de Molineux had and still have possession of those in Hethchernok, and James de Pykering had and still has possession of the bailiwick.
Nicholas de Harynton, son of the said John and Katharine, aged 16 1/2 years, is their heir and Robert de Harynton’s.
John de Harynton held also in right of Katharine his wife:—
Aghton. 60s. rent from tenements held for life by John de Bailley, which tenements were held of Henry late duke of Lancaster by homage and fealty. After the death of John and Katharine the duke and Robert de Harynton received the rent during their lives; and since the death of the duke the rent has remained unlevied in the hand of the said tenant.

LANCASTER. Inq. taken at Horneby, Monday before St. Margaret, 36 Edward III.
The said John held jointly with Katharine his wife, also deceased, by gift of John de Harynton of Aldyngham to them and the heirs of their bodies, with reversion to the donor and his heirs, the following:—
Farleton in Lonesdale. The manor (extent given), held of the aforesaid John de Harynton of Aldyngham by fealty and service of a rose yearly, and by suit to the court of Horneby every three weeks. The said John holds it of Robert de Nevill, as of the manor of Hornby, by knight’s service.
Whityngton. 66s. 8d. yearly rent of freemen and tenants at will, held of the same John by the above service.
The deceased also held in fee:—
Wynmerley in Gairstang. A messuage and about 40a. land, held of the king, as of the lands &c. in Wyresdale late of William de Coucy, deceased, which are in the king’s hand and in the custody of John de Coupelond, by knight’s service.
Thomas de Harynton held at the time of his death:—
Gersyngham. Tenements worth 5 marks yearly, held of Adam de Southworth and other lords, and not of the king.
Dates of the deaths of John and Katharine, and possession of Farleton and the premises in Whithinton, as above, until the death of the duke of Lancaster, since which time James de Pykering has been in possession. Since the death of John and Katharine William de Horneby, parson of the church of Ribcestre, has been in possession of the premises in Wynmerley. Since the death of Thomas de Harynton, who died on Monday before the Assumption, 35 Edward III, in parts beyond the jurors understand, James de Pikeryng, knight, has been in possession of the premises in Gersyngham, by what title the jurors know not.
Nicholas de Harynton, son of John and Katharine, aged 15 1/2 years and more at the time of the death of Robert de Harynton, is heir of John, Katharine and Thomas.

Great Salyngg. A messuage, 210a. land, 18a. meadow, 42a. pasture, 4s. rent and a rent of 1lb. cummin, held of the king in chief by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee.
Shaldeford. The manor, held of the lady Alesia de Nevyll, service not known.
He held all the above jointly with Katharine his wife, who survives, by gift of William Suclyng, chaplain, and Thomas de Twyford to them and the heirs male of their bodies, with the king’s licence by a fine levied in the king’s court.
He died on 1 January last. Joan daughter of John and Katharine, aged 4 years and more, is their heir.

Writ to the escheator to enquire as to the lands and heir of the said Roger, and who has been in possession of his lands since his death. 20 November, 35 Edward III.
SUFFOLK. Inq. taken at Cavendyssh, 28 November, 35 Edward III.
Cavendyssh. A toft, 13a. land and 1 1/2a. meadow, of which the toft, 7 1/2a. land and 1/2a. meadow are held of John de Cavendyssh, service not known, and the rest of Richard Warde and William Richer, service not known.
Chippele. The advowson of the priory.
He died on Monday after Michaelmas, 23 Edward III. Christiana the wife of William Chaunberleyn of Cavendyssh, aged 30 years and more, and Juliana and Beatrice her sisters, aged respectively 24 years and more and 22 years and more, are kinswomen and heirs of the said Roger, to wit, daughters of Ellen, daughter of Gilbert, Roger’s brother.
John de Cavendyssh, Richard Warde and William Richer have been in possession of the premises in Cavendyssh since Roger’s death until now.
