Footnotes

  • 1. Despite having been depriv. in 1554 of the 8th preb., Bankes seems to have been restored to the 6th preb., while John Kennall was pres. to the 8th.
  • 2. Wood says that he 'became Hebrew professor as canon, but doth not read because he is no Hebritian ... Partiality! Others of other houses were fit for it; but the place is reserved for a Christ Church man' (Wood's Life and Times III 375).
  • 3. Hyde complained to the king 14 May that there was nobody in Christ Church to admit him, as the dean was in London and the subdean and senior canons 'got out of town': the abp. was to speak to Dean Aldridge about the matter (Cal. S.P. Dom. 1697 p. 153).
  • 4. A fellow canon of Christ Church, William Stratford, commented, 'How the bishopric of Llandaff and deanery of Hereford will be consistent with a Regius professorship in Oxford, I cannot see. There will be no little inconvenience to the College, for want of one to hold the offices' (Portland MSS. VII 382).
