Footnotes

  • 1. This preb. appears to have been temporarily alienated in the time of Boleyn who gr. it 23 Dec. 1546 to the Crown (L. & P. xxi ii no. 599). Edward VI gr. it to the duke of Somerset 9 July 1547 (C.P.R. 1547-8 p. 190), but Somerset had sold it back to the king by 28 July (ibid. p. 119), and it must have been restored to Boleyn subsequently.
  • 2. Watson did penance 13 June 1554, and was restored to sacerdotal functions (Chanc. AB 7 f. 49v), but he obviously failed to get his preb. back.
  • 3. A gr. of next pres. to this preb. made by abp. Sandys to Samuel Sandys, gentleman, of the Middle Temple, London, and Simon Hill, notary public, of Bishopthorpe, 12 Apr. 1581, for the use of Miles Sandys, and conf. by dean and chapter 19 June (D/C Lease Reg. 1543-87 f. 313; AC 1565-1634 f. 188v) does not appear to have been exercised. Miles Sandys became preb. of North Newbald in 1585.
  • 4. 1619 in text, but quite clearly a scribal error for 1617.
