Footnotes

  • 1. In accordance with Stat. 25 Hen. VIII c. 20, abolishing papal provision of bps., and making bishoprics elective by the dean and chapter on the k.'s sole nomin. (Burn, Eccles. Law 1 201).
  • 2. The last recorded action by Day in the bp.'s reg. is at Chichester 29 Aug. 1551 (Ep. 1/1/6 f. 82). The next entry is in the name of the dean, 8 Jan. 1552, the bishopric being vac. (ibid.).
  • 3. In accordance with Stat. 1 Edw. VI c. 2, which made bishoprics donative by the k. alone, without el. (Burn, Eccles. Law 1 202).
  • 4. The see was said to be vac., 25 Dec. 1558 (Ep. 1/1/7 f. 12r-v), though it is not clear whether this was by the d. or depriv. of Christopherson. He had preached at St. Paul's Cross against Protestant doctrines 27 Nov. 1558, and was imprisoned by the queen (Zurich Letters, ed. H. Robinson (Cambridge, 1842) p. 4; Acts of the Privy Council, 1558-70 p. 28). 28 Dec. is given as the date of his d. by Strype and as his burial by Henry Machyn, the contemporary chronicler.
  • 5. In accordance with Stat. 25 Hen. VIII c. 20, now restored, by which the k. issues a lic. to the dean and chapter under the great seal (congé d'élire), and with the lic., a letter missive containing the name of the person they are to el.
  • 6. Queen's principal secretary of state.
  • 7. 30 Sept. is also the date given by the m.i., Chichester cath. (Dallaway, Hist. W. Suss. 1 i 135), but his d. is given as 1 Oct. in Obituary of Richard Smyth, ed. H. Ellis (Camden Soc., 1849) p. 84, and in Wood, Athenae Oxon. 111 841. He was buried 8 Oct., according to the burial reg. of St. Peter the Great, the subdeanery ch., but this gives his date of d. as 13 Sept., possibly in error for 30 Sept. (Par. 44/2/1 f. 207).
  • 8. In accordance with Stat. 1 Will. & Mary c. 8 s. 7, by which the holders of any benefice who had not sworn allegiance to William and Mary were suspended 1 Aug. 1689, and depriv. 1 Feb. 1690.
  • 9. Cap. 1/3/2 has five folios, containing the process of el. and instal., all numbered 147.
  • 10. J. Nichols, Literary Anecdotes of the 18th Century (London, 1812-15) 1 208-9, gives 25 Aug. as his date of d., but also cites his m.i., in St. Andrew, Holborn, which gives 24 Aug.
