Avenbury occ. 26 Jan. 1249 (Deed no. 793; Ch. & Rec. p. 84). A long dispute about the deanery began when a Savoyard party in Hereford attempted to replace him. He was said to be intending to resign, 13 Dec. 1253 (CPL. 1 293), and occ. as treasurer 30 Oct. 1253, with Anselm of Clermont as dean (Deed no. 1352; Ch. & Rec. p. 106). Swinfield p. 322). Avenbury failed to obtain possession, and Aquablanca appealed to Rome. By 1275 both sides had appointed rival subdeans (Reg. Cantilupe pp. 2-3). 19 Nov. 1276, temporary arrangements for jurisdiction of deanery during dispute made by bp. (ibid. pp. 112, 113-14, 115); approved by chapt., 15 Jan. 1277 (ibid. p. 118).
A succession of short-lived popes delayed a decision on the appeal (Reg. Swinfield p. 321 seqq.). Bp. Cantilupe coll. the deanery c. 1280 conditionally to Fileby, pending a decision (Reg. Cantilupe p. 234). Avenbury d. by 2 Nov. 1280 (ibid.; Reg. Swinfield p. 41). Curia awarded deanery to Aquablanca, 3-4 July 1282 (Reg. Swinfield pp. 321-6). Held deanery to d. in 1320.
