Deanery reserved for Benedict de Montealto 2 Aug. 1357 (CPL. III 581). Prov. before 3 Sept. (CPP. I 301). Walsham presented to abp. by the Prince of Wales as dn. 17 Oct. (Black Prince's Reg. III 281). Mand. by abp. to adm. 20 Oct. (Lamb., Reg. Islip f. 279). Mand. 24 Nov. to escheator for Cheshire and Flint to seize Benet ab Iorwerth who had procured the deanery by papal prov. and to imprison him (Black Prince's Reg. 111 282). Benet ab Iorwerth still in possession of the deanery 10 Dec. as second mand. sent by the Prince of Wales to seize and imprison him (ibid. p. 289). Occ. as dn. 18 Dec. (ibid. p. 290). Captured by 6 Feb. 1358 as order sent then to Constable of Chester castle 'to guard the said Benet in irons', but 'in a decent chamber within the castle' and to allow him 'the comfort of fire and other necessaries' (ibid. p. 291).

Estate of Cotyngham ratif. 4 Sept. 1393 (CPR. 1391-1396 p. 327). Hywel had regained possession of the deanery by 1394 as letter sent that year from the Earl of Arundel and Surrey to abp. of York, with request that he should show favour to Hywel, because Morgan the Young, sheriff of Flint, was trying to oust him from the deanery for the benefit of his own son (Anglo-Norman Letters and Petitions, ed. M. D. Legge (Oxford, 1941) pp. 76-8). Royal pardon gr. to Hywel 6 May 1401 (CPR. 1399-1401 p. 452). Probably held deanery until d., c. 1402 (CPL. IV 420; Emden, Reg. Ox. II 1067).
