LIST 14 PREBENDARIES OF THE PREBENDA EPISCOPI
PREBEND
This preb., founded by bp. Ralph of Maidstone to provide for the penitentiary, was not endowed, but the can. holding it was automatically entitled to a share in the small commons and to other commons payments if he resided. It is mentioned as 'prebenda que est vicaria episcopi' in the mid 13th-cent. cath. statutes (LS II 59), but not listed in pope Nicholas's taxation. The taxation list entered into bp. Swinfield's register in 1294 states: 'Penitenciarius nichil percipit nisi communam' (Reg. Swinfield p. 305). Valor III 9 assessed this preb. at 37s 8½d, the value of a share in the small commons.

Occ. as penitentiary 1234 x 1239 (Hereford ch. no. 1409); commem. 10 March (app. 1 fo. 9v).
M. Peter of Radnor
Had become penitentiary by 12 June 1264 (CPR 1258-66 p. 324), and he may have continued to hold the preb. of Huntington simultaneously (list 20).
Geoffrey the penitentiary
Occ. as penitentiary 18 Jan. 1268 (Hereford ch. no. 2930) and as penitentiary and can., c. 1262 x 1271 (Hereford ch. no. 2461) and 1271 (cart I. pp. v-vi); commem., as penitentiary and can., 3 Sept. (app. 1 fo. 34v). Prob. d. 3 Sept. 1271 or 1272.
M. Roger of Bosbury (fn. 1)
Occ. as can. and penitentiary 1271 x 1274 (Reg. Swinfield p. 57); occ. as can. Apr. 1273 (Hereford ch. no. 1283); occ. as resident can. 24 June and 30 Sept. 1273 (Capes, Charters pp. 138-9); mentioned as recently d. 8 June 1275 (CPR 1272-81 p. 93), in gr. of preb. which had been his to M. John of St-Omer; commem. 4 June, as can. and penitentiary, making bequest of money to church fabric and to cans. and clks. present at his obsequies and of two silver cruets to the high altar (app. 1 fo. 20v); evidently d. 4 June 1275.

Henry son of Warin
Received gr. of preb. which had belonged to the late M. Roger of Bosbury, after the gr. to M. John of St-Omer had been revoked, 24 June 1275 (CPR 1272-81 p. 96).
Nicholas the penitentiary II
Occ. as 'formerly penitentiary, now can.' 31 Jan. 1284 (Reg. Pecham II 221), but since he vacated a preb. as penitentiary (the preb. in question was Withington Parva (see list 35)) by 25 Aug. 1285 (Reg. Swinfield p. 525), he prob. did not cease to be penitentiary before 1284.
Hugh de Braose (fn. 2)
Coll. to preb. of the penitentiary 9 July 1293 (Reg. Swinfield p. 529); occ. as Hugh the penitentiary and as resident can. 29 Sept. 1295 (Capes, Charters p. 168); d. 1320 (Hereford ch. no. 823; 2 Fasti II 22); successor was coll. 21 Dec. 1320.
