Churches of Masham (N.R.), Kirkby Malzeard (W.R.) and Langford (Notts.) gr. by Roger de Mowbray to cath. Oct. 1154× 1157 (Mowbray Chs. no. 325); gr. by Roger de Mowbray to cath. as preb. c. 1163 × c. 1169 (YMF I no. 34; dated Mowbray Chs. no. 326) and conf. by Walter Buher c. 1163 × 1186 (YMF I no. 35). These churches had been gr. to Newburgh priory c. 1145, conf. Dec. 1147 × Oct. 1153 (Mowbray Chs. nos. 196-9). Tithe composition with Fountains abbey 1154 × 58 (EEA XX no. 25, and notes). Exemption of churches from archidiaconal exactions etc. 1191 × 94 (YMF I nos. 36-7). Vicarages ord. in Masham and Kirkby Malzeard 5 Apr. 1278 (J. Fisher, History of Masham (1895) p. 533).

Addition to preb. of land and houses in Petergate, York, 1219 × 28 (YMF I no. 38; Chs. Vicars Choral no. 387, cf. nos. 403, 406-7, 412-13, 416-17). Prebendal house in Petergate 1414 (RCHM York V 62).

Preb. divided into three portions by abp. Romeyn 1295, each worth 50m., with residue assigned to dean and chapter for common use (Reg. Romeyn II 24). Reunited by kg., s.v., 1296 (CCR 1296-1302 p. 223).

Prebendaries

Roger d'Aubigny

Occ. as this preb. c. 1163 × 1186 (YMF I no. 35) and 1191 × 94 (ibid. no. 36). Son of Samson d'Aubigny, who was chapl. of Roger de Mowbray and his cousin (? or half-brother) and held the churches of Masham, Kirkby Malzeard and Langford, with others (see Mowbray Chs. pp. 1xv-lxvi, nos. 97, 196-7). Samson's concession of the churches to Newburgh, c. 1145, stipulated that his son Roger should hold them after his d. (ibid. no. 196).

? William son of Richard

First occ. as can. 10 Aug. 1202 (Mon. Ang. VI (2) 963). Added to this preb. his land and houses in Petergate, York, 1219 × 28 (YMF I no. 38), which suggests that he held the preb. Also occ. as can. 1197 × 1217 (EYC VII no. 154), 1199 × 1217 (Chs. Vicars Choral no. 72), and Nov. 1215 × Aug. 1218 (Reg. Gray p. 133).

Walter de Woburn

First occ. as can. 2 Apr. 1226, disp. for plurality (CPL I 108 = Reg. Hon. III no. 5882, noted Reg. Gray p. 329). Occ. as archdcn. of E.R. 4 Dec. 1235 and 22 Sept. 1237 (list 11) and as archdcn. of Richmond 17 Feb. 1239 (list 13). Evidently this preb. when occ. 22 Sept. 1237 (PRO, KB 26/117 m. 6; cf. Yorks. Assize Rolls p. 121).

Walter de Grey the younger (fn. 182)

Clerk, rector of Seamer (N.R.), coll. 27 March 1235, inst. 5 June 1237 (Reg. Gray pp. 68, 77; Fasti Paroch. III 83). Rector of Gargrave (W.R.) from before 1244 (Reg. Gray p. 113; Fasti Paroch. IV 43). First occ. as can. 21 Sept. 1249 (Reg. Gray p. 261 n.). Preb. of Southwell and of Beverley from before 1 May 1255 (Reg. Wickwane p. 339; Beverley Fasti p. 47). Occ. as can. of York, holding land in Lincs. 1256 and 1257 (Lincs. Final Concords II, ed. C. W. Foster (Lincs. Rec. Soc. xvii, 1920) pp. 139, 140, 160). Occ. as this preb. Sept. 1260 (Yorks. Assize Rolls p. 121). Forfeited this preb. and preb. of Beverley by 5 Nov. 1265 (CPR 1258-66 p. 498) and preb. of Southwell by 26 Dec. (ibid. p. 523). To stand trial, safe-conduct 19 Jan. 1266 (ibid. p. 537); another safe-conduct 20 Feb. 1267, possibly for restoration of lands (CPR 1266-72 p. 39). Called can. of York 12 Dec. 1267 (ibid. p. 173). D. as rector of Gargrave (W.R.) 11 Nov. 1271 (Reg. Giffard p. 34; cf. Reg. Gray p. 113). Nephew of abp. Walter de Grey, being son of abp.'s brother Robert (Reg. Gray p. 263; and see ibid. p. 256, Reg. Wickwane p. 339); brother of Henry de Grey, can. of York, unident. preb., his predecessor in church of Gargrave (Reg. Giffard p. 34; list 51).

Bogo de Clare

Royal coll. to this preb., s.v., 5 Nov. 1265 (CPR 1258-66 p. 498). Treas. of York by royal coll. 15 Sept. 1285 and preb. Wilton (lists 5, 48), but retained this preb. Notorious pluralist, his benefices in York province and dioc. listed 16 Feb. 1291, including this preb., valued at 300m. (Reg. Romeyn I 396). Occ. as this preb. 28 Aug. 1293 (Misc. Reg. fo. 5v). D. towards the end of Oct. 1294 (list 5).

Had possession for 2 years before 3 June 1298, when kg. protested against papal prov. of this preb. to John de Colonna son of Landulf (ibid.; for John de Colonna, see also list 27). Royal letters dated 20 Dec. 1298, 18 March 1299, 30 March 1299 (CCR 1296-1302 pp. 292, 301, 300, 309). Appd. papal chapl. 27 Sept. 1298 (CPL I 577 = Reg. Bon. VIII no. 2638). Dcn., disp. 27 Sept. 1298, at kg's request, to hold preb. of York and other benefices although under age when he obtained them (CPL I 577 = Reg. Bon. VIII no. 2638).
