Prebend

Fenton part of soke of Sherburn in Elmet (W.R.), ancient estate of abp. (EYC I no. 6, cal. P. H. Sawyer, Anglo-Saxon Charters (Royal Hist. Soc., 1968), no. 712; cf. EYC I no. 7); in 1086 abp.'s estate of Sherburn included Barkston, Church Fenton and Lennerton (Yorks. DB fos. 302v, 379).

Prebs. of Fenton and Wistow (list 49) created by abp. out of former preb. of Sherburn, after 10 Nov. 1215, conf. by pope 31 Aug. 1218 (Reg. Gray pp. 132-4 and n.), this preb. consisting of tithes, altarage and obventions in Fenton, Lennerton and Barkston and a portion of the church of Sherburn, after d. of M. Peter of Sherburn (see below), with land in Poppleton and moiety of church of St Maurice, Monkgate, York. Second moiety of St Maurice (formerly preb. Fridaythorpe, list 26) added 1233 × 40 (ibid. p. 184). Vicarages ord. in prebendal churches of Sherburn, Fenton and St Maurice Oct. 1240 (ibid. pp. 185-8). Proctor of abp. Giffard at the Curia was authorized to make an agreement about a canonry of York and the church of Fenton 18 Nov. 1268 (Reg. Giffard p. 7).

Houses in Minster Close by March 1292 (Chs. Vicars Choral no. 325). Prebendal house in High Petergate 14th cent. (RCHM York V 181, cf. p. 200).

Matteo Rosso Orsini's proposal to appropriate this preb. (with preb. Nassington in Lincoln cath.) to St Peter's and the hospital of S. Spirito in Sassia, Rome, of which he was warden, opposed by abp. in letter dated 20 Sept. 1288 (Reg. Romeyn II pp. xvi-xviii, 28-9) and in 1290 was opposed by kg. and barons (CCR 1288-96 pp. 134-5, 450; Rotuli Parliamentorum (6 vols., Rec. Comm. [1783]) I 33b; CPL I 518 = Reg. Nic. IV no. 3341).
