LIST 18 PREBENDARIES OF GATES
PREBEND
Eastergate (W. Suss.) held by abbot of Séez of earl Roger 1086 (DB I 25c, 'Gate'). Abbot of Séez's lands formed preb., with lands in Aldingbourne and Birdham (W. H. Blaauw, in Suss. Archaeol. Collections iii (1850) 55). First reference to preb. 1291, but perhaps preb. by Sept. 1247 when an exchange of land was made by abbot of Grestain to rector of Eastergate, and was conf. by bp. and dean and chapter (Cat. Ancient Deeds II nos. B/3864, 3868). Lands and rents in Aldingbourne and Sidlesham 1535 (Valuation 1535 p. 166; see also VCH Suss. IV 136).
Dcn.-preb.
Valuation 1291 £8 (Taxatio p. 137b).
PREBENDARIES
[? Godfrey
Rector of Eastergate ('Gates'), received an exchange of land from abbot of Séez Sept. 1247, conf. by bp. Richard 30 Jan. 1248 (Cat. Ancient Deeds II no. B/3864 = St Richard p. 44 no. 64, where, however, the date of the exchange is given wrongly as Sept. 1248). Possibly preb., but no canon called Godfrey is otherwise known at this time.]
First certainly identified preb. is John de Mitford, who had papal prov. to next vacant preb. 2 July 1326; occ. as this preb. 3 Nov. 1345; died by 14 June 1348 (2 Fasti VII 24).
