TREASURY
Dignity established by bp. Hilary between 3 Aug. 1147 and 18 Apr. 1148, when conf. by pope Eugenius III (PUE II no. 57, cal. Chart. Chichester no. 60).
Church of Eastbourne (E. Suss.) belonged to treas. by 1199 × 1215 (Chart. Chichester no. 332). Eastbourne a manor of the count of Mortain 1086 (DB I 20c). The treasurer's house in the Close is referred to 25 Oct. 1300 (Chart. Chichester no. 708). It was demolished 1834; for its position and surviving fragments, see Tatton-Brown, in Chichester Cathedral pp. 227, 234-5.

Presum. first treas., appointed on establishment of dignity 3 Aug. 1147 × 18 Apr. 1148 (as above). But occ. twice without title in early years of bp. Hilary (Acta no. 42; Chart. Chichester no. 298). First occ. as treas. 3 Aug. 1147 × 1157 (Acta no. 28) and mid Feb. 1157 (Chron. Battle p. 162). Occ. several times. Last occ. 15 Jan. 1179/ 80 (Acta no. 60) and shortly after (Chart. Chichester no. 1068, and cf. Acta no. 58).
Luke preb. Eartham, list 14
Occ. as treas. 16 Nov. 1180 × 15 Nov. 1181 (Acta no. 120) and on two further occasions temp. bp. Seffrid II, after 16 Nov. 1180 (ibid. nos. 104, 138). Referred to as treas., evidently already dead, 1187 × 97 (ibid. no. 89), so presum. not to be identified with Luke precentor (list 4) unless he held both dignities together in mid 1180s (cf. Mayr-Harting's comment, Acta p. 212).

Still canon, not yet treas. when occ. after c. 1187 (list 37). First occ. as treas. [1189] (Cart. Southwick I 86 (I 143); also Memoranda Roll 1207-8 (Pipe Roll Soc. new series xxxi) p. 90, referring back seven years from 1196). Occ. several times. Occ. with king in Germany from July 1193 to Jan. 1194 (Itinerary of Richard I, ed. L. Landon (Pipe Roll Soc. new series xiii, 1935) pp. 79-82) and at Issoudun 3 July 1195 (ibid. p. 102). Apparently still treas. when mentioned March 1196 (Memoranda Roll 1207-8 p. 90). Dean by 1197/8 (list 2).
Richard preb. unident., list 41
Perhaps to be identified with Richard archdcn. [of Chichester] who occ. in 1190s (list 8). First occ. as treas., one of three distributors of the commons, 1197/8 (Acta no. 101). Occ. temp. bp. Seffrid II, before c. 17 March 1204 (ibid. nos. 71, 95, 111; Chart. Lewes I 109-10). Last occ. temp. bp. Simon of Wells, 11 July 1204 × 21 Aug. 1207 (Chart. Chichester no. 339).
Pandulph (fn. 2) preb. unident., list 41
Perhaps canon, called 'Master P.', by 8 June 1205 (Innocent III, Cal. Letters no. 628; list 42). Occ. as treas. 22 Sept. 1219 (Liber Censuum de l'église romaine, ed. P. Fabre and L. Duchesne (3 vols., Paris, 1905-10) I 260-1; cal. from papal reg. CPL I 69-70, omitted in Reg. Hon. III), and prob. described as treas. in 1232, after his death (see Vincent, in Historical Research lxviii (1995) 153-4). Died some time before 5 March 1231 (Reg. Grég. IX no. 575 = CPL I 125; see below), possibly by 1227 (Monte Cassino necrology, cited by Vincent p. 154).
M. William de Neville preb. unident., list 41
[M. Alatrinus]
Alatrinus had papal prov., but William de Neville already appointed by bp. and installed after death of Pandulph and at least three months before 5 March 1231 (Reg. Grég. IX no. 575 = CPL I 125). (fn. 3) Papal mandate to bp. to give Alatrinus, papal subdcn. and chapl., a benefice of equal value 5 March 1231 (ibid.; cf. Reg. Grég. IX nos. 34, 3839); papal mandate to legate Otto, 11 May 1238, to restore Alatrinus to treasurership, evidently ineffective (Reg. Grég. IX no. 4336 = CPL I 173). William de Neville occ. as treas. 1 March 1232 (Cat. Ancient Deeds V no. A/11537) and thereafter frequently until last occ. 4 Nov. 1256 (Chart. Chichester no. 1080). Increased the goods of the office (Walcott, Statutes p. 166). Provision for his anniversary Chart. Chichester nos. 466-71, 501. Brother of Robert de Neville and of Nicholas de Neville, canon (list 42; see Chart. Chichester no. 577), and therefore of bp. Ralph de Neville and of Roger de Neville (see Nicholas de Neville, list 42).
Nicholas of Pagham preb. unident., list 41
First occ., as Nicholas treas., 28 Dec. 1264 (Chart. Chichester no. 242), and with full name and title 29 June 1267 (ibid. no. 638). Occ. several times. Last occ. c. 1275 (ibid. no. 663, closely related to no. 664, which bears date 1275/6).
