PREBEND

Churches of Heytesbury (Wilts., royal manor), with 3 hides, held by Aluuardus the priest, 1086 (DB I 65c), and Godalming (Surrey, royal manor), held by Ranulph Flambard 1086 (ibid. 30d). Both gr. to cath. by Henry I, 1101 × Apr. 1116 [? May 1106] on condition that Ranulph Flambard to continue to hold them, as can. of Salisbury, 'quamdiu vixerit' (Sar. Chs. p. 3, cal. Regesta II no. 753; cf. RSO I 200, cal. Regesta II no. 1972). Church of Hill Deverill (Wilts., Giffard manor 1086, DB I 72d) adjudged to belong to this preb. before Dec. 1139, and gr. by Elias Giffard to can. Roger of Ramsbury (RSO I 349).

Heytesbury a collegiate church by mid 12th century (see J. L. Kirby in VCH Wilts. III 389, citing RSO I 340, 343-4), with further gifts to serve chapels of Tytherington, Horningsham and church of Swallowcliffe (Regesta III no. 792; RSO I 340-2, 346-8, 351; cf. PUE II no. 53 p. 209). Collegiate constitution established by bp. Jocelin, 1142 × 48, setting up four prebendal canonries in Heytesbury, whose holders were to be appd. by preb. of Heytesbury in Salisbury cath. (RSO I 337-8; and see VCH Wilts. III 389-90).

Preb. listed c. 1150 (Psalter list). Conf. as preb. by Henry II 1158 (RSO I 203, also pp. 207, 238) and by pope 8 Dec. 1161 (ibid. p. 352; cf. Jaffé nos. 10683-90).

Preb. held by deans of Salisbury from time of M. Walter Scammel, dean 1271-84 (below). Bp.'s conf. of preb., dated 3 Feb. 1281, seems to have ratified annexation to deanery, though text does not refer to deanery, and rubric in Liber Evidentiarum C, 'Ratificatio prebende domini decani...', is in a hand of mid or late 14th cent. (C. 13, pd. Sar. Chs. pp. 358-9).

Senior royal official; dean of Christchurch, Twynham (Hants); preb. of London and Lincoln; bp. of Durham, nom. and temps. May, cons. June 1099, d. Sept. 1128 (1 Fasti I 4, 79, 97-8, III 100, II 29).

Roger of Ramsbury

First occ. as can. and this preb. some time before Dec. 1139 (RSO I 349). Archdcn., presum. Wilts., from before Dec. 1139, last occ. 13 Dec. 1157 (list 10). Occ. this preb. as archdcn. c. 1156 and c. 1150 × 1160 (RSO I 238, 337, 343).

Succeeded Roger of Ramsbury as archdcn., presum. of Wilts. by 8 Dec. 1161, and prob. also in this preb. (RSO I 352, and list 10). Bp. of Bath, el. 1173, cons. 23 June 1174.]

II pp. 73, 94), and 'quondam' can. of Heytesbury 1220 (RSO I 312). Said by Jones, Fasti p. 357, to have held preb. Beminster I (see list 18).]

Although it has been stated that from William de Waude's time all deans of Salisbury held preb. of Heytesbury, (fn. 2) William's successor as dean, M. Robert de Hertford, did not succeed to this preb., but continued to hold preb. Wilsford and Woodford as dean (list 61).
