Preb., consisting of Bedminster, with chapels of [St Mary] Redcliffe, [Abbots] Leigh (all Somt.) and Alveston (Glos.), conf. by Henry II by 19 Oct. 1157 (Saltman, Theobald no. 241; RSO I 203). Prob. to be identified with churches at Bristol, previously held by Guy of Bristol, conf. by Henry I 1107 x 35 (RSO I 202, cal. Regesta II no. 1972).

Preb. prob. added to Psalter list after c. 1150. Preb. mentioned in agreements with Bath priory, concerning chapel of Alveston, 1151 x c. 1164 (RSO I 244-5), and with St Augustine's, Bristol, concerning estates in Bristol, c. 1175 (ibid. p. 269), and [Abbots] Leigh, May x Nov. 1193 (ibid. p. 264); further dispute with St Augustine's, 1227 (Pat. R. 1225-32 p. 157). See also Sar. Chs. pp. 172-3, 286-8.

Preb. named as Bedminster in all 12th-cent. documents, but called 'Radeclive' 1220s (C. 462, pd. Sar. Chs. p. 208), 'Ratecliv' Oct. 1226 x Feb. 1227 (RSO II 73), 'Radeclive' 1284 (app. 2, and cf. C. 511). But not two prebs., as thought by Jones, Fasti p. 360.

Royal justice 1218-44 (Turner, Judiciary pp. 194, 218-19, 257, 301). Coll. by bp. to preb. previously held by Gilbert de Lacy, 28 Dec. 1227 (RSO II 81, 94-6), but preb. claimed by M. John Romeyn, subdean of York, on strength of papal prov. of next vacant preb. 8 Aug. 1227 (ibid. pp. 82-3). Robert's coll. declared void by Romeyn 21 Apr. 1228 (RSO II 83), but Robert occ. as can. 9 Sept. 1228 (RSO II 108, initial wrongly extended as 'Richard', cf.
