A portion of oblations of high altar of cath., 'medietatem totius oblationis que super principale offertur altare', included in bp. Osmund's gr. to cath. 1091 (carta; cf. Inst. p. 80). Conf. by pope 26 Nov. 1146 (PUE II no. 53 p. 210).

Moiety of high altar oblations created preb. by bp. Jocelin (IV/C.2/Royal charters/36 and C. 47, clause omitted from version in RSO MS, pd. RSO I 203-6; see Greenway, 'Orders' p. 58 n. 14). (fn. 1) Placed first in Psalter list of prebs., prob. c. 1150. Preb. accounted for 108s. in 1186, 100s. in 1187, £4 in 1188 (PR 32 Hen. II p. 167, 33 Hen. II p. 187, 34 Hen. II p. 184).

Preb. annexed to bpric. until 11 Apr. 1219, when released in place of Horton, list 37 (Sar. Chs. pp. 85-6).

Penitentiary, by 23 Nov. 1276 (Cart. Glastonbury I 62). First occ. as can. (also penitienciary) 27 March 1277/8 (Salisbury, D. & C. Libr. MS 153, see Cat. Libr. Sal.). Occ. as William penitentiary and this preb. May-June 1284 (app. 2). Occ. several times (cf. app. 3). Executor of will of M. Ralph of York I (Early Rolls of Merton p. 109). Last occ. as can. and executor of bp. Robert de Wickhampton's will, 20 June 1302 (Reg. Gandavo I 90). But presum. transf. to another, unident., preb. (list 66) before 30 Dec. 1295 (cf. below).
