PREBEND

Ten pounds sterling from farm of archdcnry. of Lincoln, paid by archdcn. at two terms, 100s. at Easter and 100s. at Michaelmas (R.A.L. II no. 350); first mentioned by name 1203 × 06, but document refers to two previous holders of preb., going back perhaps to 1170s (ibid.; cf. below). Preb. perhaps in existence by 5 June 1163, when pope conf. as preb. £4 of land in city of Lincoln given by Helfrid the reeve and Fulk his son-in-law, and £4 in augmentation of this preb. given by bp. Robert [de Chesney] from his annual rent in archdcnry. of Lincoln, and the render of thraves from the parishioners of Lincs. called St. Marycorn (R.A.L. I no. 255 p. 206). In 1167 and 1168 two cans. were each receiving £10 'de camera episcopi', but neither can be identified as this preb. (Herbert Le Poer, below p. 127, and Roger of Worcester, p. 144). See also R.A.L. M. Alan of Buckden (fn. 1)

Called successor of M. Simon de Trou and predecessor of Peter de Colonna in this preb. (R.A.L. II no. 350). Occ. as can. n.d. (Genealogist n.s. xvi p. 30), and 1205 × June 1206, perhaps in May 1206 (Cart. Osen. IV no. 16). (fn. 2) Perhaps to be identified with one of several cans. of 1180s called Alan: Alan, brother of Laurence archdcn. of Bedford (below p. 119), or M. Alan (p. 119), or Alan de Leirtona (p. 119), or Alan Picot (p. 120).

Peter de Colonna

Papal prov. of a preb. 1203 × Dec. 1205 (Innocent III, Cal. Letters no. 671). Coll. by bp. to this preb., but res. before 10 May 1206 (R.A.L. II no. 350).

M. William son of Fulk II

Peter of Kirmond (fn. 3)

Clk. of bps. William of Blois (1203-6) and Hugh of Wells (1209-35) (cart. Bardney fo. 37v; Liber Ant. p. 74 etc.). First occ. as can. (unident. preb.) 25 May 1219 (R.A.L. II no. 375). Prob. to be identified with Peter, can. and provost of the Common, who occ. Sept. 1224 (ibid. VII no. 2153). Coll. by bp. to this preb. 28 Sept. 1225 (ibid. II no. 352). Last occ. 8 Sept. 1227 (B.L., Add. Ch. 21999).

Amaury de Montfort

Preb. of London, from c. 1262 × 1263 (Fasti 1066-1300 I 48); treas. of York, from 7 Feb. 1265. Also papal chapl., can. of Évreux and Rouen. Preferments except treasurership and preb. of York withdrawn 1265; imprisoned 1275-82. Dispute with Robert de Winchelsey over preb. Leighton Manor, 1280 (list 46). Res. preb. Decem Librarum on renouncing clerical status to take knighthood, presum. 1287 (Flor. Hist. III 67), before 2 Oct. 1294 (Reg. I fo. 357v). Styled can. of Lincoln in will dated 1289 (Comp. Peer. VII 547 n.). Still alive 1300/1 (ibid.).
