His executors rendered account temp. abp. John Pecham (1279-92) (Reg. Winchelesey II 1147).

Certainly to be distinguished from Alexander Malebisse and Alexander de Saccaville, with both of whom he occ. c. 23 May 1147 (R.A.L. III no. 921, cf. below). Also certainly a different individual from M. Alexander, can., vice-archdcn., and archdcn. of Stow, unident. preb., with whom he occ. 30 May 1163 (R.A.L. IX no. 2474, cf. list 14 and p. 110).

Prob. to be identified with Bartholomew of Southwell who occ. presum. as can. c. 1200 (R.A.L. III no. 674, see app. 47). Preb. not to be identified as Louth, which is usually spelt 'Luda' or 'Lauda', and which was occupied at this time (list 48). Perhaps a scribal error for Stow (St. Mary or Longa, lists 61-2), but clearly written as 'Luwe' in patent roll (P.R.O., C. 66/2 m. 2).

Charles of Beaumont

Papal prov. of canonry and preb. 30 Sept. 1291 (Dij/55/2/17 and 64/1/8). Occ. as can., papal mand. for installation by proxy, 1 Feb. 1298 (Dij/55/2/20). Son of Louis, vicomte of Beaumont-sur-Sarthe (Sarthe, France), and brother of M. Louis of Beaumont, treas. of Salisbury (Dij/55/2/17-20).

Geoffrey 'abas'

Occ. as can. in L.P. I, of ? c. 1132 (app. 2 no. 3). There are at least two different possibilities for his identity:

(1) It was suggested by H. E. Salter (E.H.R. xxxv (1920) 213) that Geoffrey should be identified with Geoffrey (de Gorron), abbot of St. Albans (1119-46), and that he was succeeded as can. of Lincoln by his successor as abbot, Ralph (Gubion), who occ. in chapter at Lincoln prob. second half of 1147 (below p. 135). (fn. 16) Although it was possible for a head of a Ben. house to hold a preb. in a secular cathedral, (fn. 17) the evidence for Geoffrey and Ralph is far from conclusive, and there is nothing to suggest that later abbots of St. Albans had any claim to a stall in the Lincoln chapter.

(2) Geoffrey might have been a member of the midland family of Abbas (le Abbe, Abbot). A Geoffrey Abbas (? a relative) occ. frequently in the early years of king Henry II in Leics., Warwicks., and elsewhere (see, e.g., P.R. 2-4 Hen. II, ed. J. Hunter (1844) pp. 145, 184, 185; P.R. 5 Hen. II (P.R.S. i) pp. 26, 52, 57; R.B.E. I 18, 21, 25, II 655, 699; cf. V.C.H. Leics. V 52).

Geoffrey de Bocland (fn. 18)

Occ. as can. 12 Apr. 1221 (Rot. Welles II 191). Also preb. of Salisbury; dean of St. Martin le Grand, London; archdcn. of Norfolk (Fasti 1066-1300 II 65). Still alive 31 Aug. 1225 (Rot. Litt. Claus. II 80a). D. by 14 Sept. 1225 (Pat. R. 1216-25 p. 550).

Geoffrey of Thouars

Geoffrey de Torpell' (fn. 22)

First occ. as can. ? c. 1163 (R.A.L. IX no. 2500, see app. 22). Last occ. ? late 1183 or early 1184 (Danelaw Chs. no. 291, and R.A.L. IX no. 2603, see app. 31; cf. cart. II (P.R.S. xii) p. 77). Presum. to be identified with Gerard can. and subdcn. who d. before c. 1188, commem. 8 Dec. (obit. I 163). Prob. to be identified with Gerard, nephew of bp.
