PRIORS OF WINCHESTER

Winchester was the oldest cathedral monastery, having been founded by St. capæthelwold in 964. On entering office in 1070, bishop Walkelin sought to replace the monks by canons, but although the proposal had royal consent, it was successfully opposed by Lanfranc on his appointment as archbishop later in the same year. (fn. 1)

After many disputes in the thirteenth century, a formal agreement between bishop and convent over freedom of election of the prior was reached in June-July 1284. (fn. 2)
