Ranulph

First occ. prob. shortly before Aug. 1127 (Durham Episc. Chs. no. 23), and in [Aug. 1128] (ibid. no. 25). Supporter of prior Roger against William Cumin, bp.-el. of Durham, and driven out of Durham Sept. 1141 (Sym. Dun. 1 146). Accompanied William de Sancta Barbara to his cons. 20 June 1143 (ibid. pp. 148-50). Last occ. c. March 1153 (John of Hexham, ibid. 11 328, 329). Commem. 15 or 16 Dec. (Durham obit. I fo. 38v). Occ. with both Robert and Wazo, archdcns., to both of whom he took junior position. (fn. 1) Nephew of Ranulph Flambard, bp. of Durham (1099-1128) (Sym. Dun. 11 312; Durham Episc. Chs. no. 20).

John

Occ. with both Wazo and Burchard du Puiset, archdcns., to both of whom he took junior position. (fn. 2) Sole archdcn. during vacancy in senior line, c. 1158-c. 1172. Son of Hugh du Puiset, bp. of Durham (1153-95) (ibid. pp. 312-13). Called archdcn. of Northumbria at least twice (Feod. Pr. Dun. p. 125 n.; Scammell, Puiset p. 261).

G- de Perche

Appd. before Apr. 1197 (Innocent III, Cal. Letters no. 464), but negligent absentee (ibid.), and last occ. 15 Feb. 1203 (ibid.). Perhaps to be identified with 'Theobald' de Perche, not called archdcn., who occ. in connection with bpric. of Durham and d. by Sept. 1211 (Pipe Roll 13 John (Pipe Roll Soc., new ser. xxviii) p. 38).

M. Richard de Marisco

First occ. as archdcn. 1 Nov. 1211 (C.Ch.R. iv 71). Also royal clk., can. of Exeter; archdcn. of Richmond from Feb. 1213; royal chanc. in 1213 and from 1214 to d. Archdcn. until became bp. of Durham, appd. May 1217, cons. July (above p. 31).

IV no. 7688). ?To be identified with Thomas of Hertford, brother of abbot of St. Albans (Herts.), (fn. 8) described as archdcn. of Northumbria, who d. 17 Aug. 1253 (Chron. Maj. v 383).

Hill 1 (Lincoln Record Soc. xxxix) 69-70), and occ. without title 30 Dec. 1256 (C.P.R. 1247-58 p. 535). Presum. to be identified with M. R-, archdcn. of Northumbria, who occ. 21 Oct. 1256 or earlier (Durham, 4.1. Pap. 16). Bp.-el. of Carlisle 1256 (above p. 20). Transf. to archdcnry. of Durham by July 1257 (above p. 39).

M. Roger de Herteburn
