BISHOPS OF CARLISLE

The establishment of the diocese may be said to date from 1133, with the consecration of the first bishop, Adelulf, prior of Nostell, although the scheme for founding a see at Carlisle probably originated in c. 1122, (fn. 1) and by 1136 arrangements were still incomplete and the church under-endowed. (fn. 2) The area which formed the diocese corresponded to the territory annexed by king William Rufus in 1092. Situated on the border, its ecclesiastical allegiance before 1133 may have been ambiguous: English sources put it in the diocese of York, but the Scottichronicon describes bishop John of Glasgow's pastoral work in the area. (fn. 3)

Adelulf

Prior of Nostell (Aug., Yorks., West). Perhaps nom. bp. before Dec. 1124, because allowed by pope Calixtus II (1119-24) to retain priorate together with another office (see document ed. by J. Wilson in Scottish Hist. Review vii (1910) 156, 159). Cons. prob. 6 Aug. 1133 (John of Hexham in Sym. Dun. 11 285). (fn. 4) Retained priorate of Nostell until 1153 (J. Burton, Monasticon Eboracense (York, 1758) p. 301; Early Yorks. Charters 1 no. 28 and 111 no. 1474; cf. York Minster Fasti 11 13). Difficulty over date of d.: perhaps either 25 May 1156 or 10 May 1157 (Rob. Torigny 1 300 gives 1156; Gesta Hen. II 1 349 gives 1157, the morrow of the Ascension, the 5th year of Henry II (i.e. 1158)). (fn. 5)

[Paulinus of Leeds (fn. 6)

Master of St. Leonard's hospital, York. El. [July] 1186 at king's wish, but declined (Gesta Hen. II 1 349; Howden 11 309; cf. R. W. Eyton, Court, Household and Itinerary of Hen. II (1878) p. 269).]
