First preb. in cats., 'Walterus archidiaconus'. Always occ. as archdcn., without territ. title, but presum. of Essex, by June 1102, to 1111/12 or later.

Richard [Ruffus I]

Occ. in cats. between Walter and Richard Junior, 'Ricardus nepos archid. [arch'i, Cat. II]'. Almost certainly to be identified with Richard Ruffus I, archdcn. of Essex prob. from before Jan. 1127, to d. in 1167. In this case there is an error in cats., which should read 'Ricardus nepos episcopi archidiaconus' (see conjecture in G.F. p. 280). Possibly preb. of Consumpta after 1150.

Richard Junior

Occ. in cats. between Richard [Ruffus I] and Robert Meldensis, 'Ricardus junior'. First occ., prob. as can., [1164 × 71] (Gibbs no. 169), (fn. 1) and perhaps earlier, [1162 × 74] (A/11/1071, pd. in Rep. p. 12a; A/71/1797, cal. in Rep. p. 50b). (fn. 2) Occ. as can. c. 1192 (D.S.R. I). Last occ. as can. after Dec. 1213 (charter roll of Holy Trinity, Aldgate: B.M., Cotton Roll xiii. 18 no. 10). D. as can. by June 1214 (Curia Regis Rolls VII 138). Commem. 22 Apr. (Obit. I fo. IIV), 23 Apr. (Obits. II fo. 108r, III fo. 95r, IV pp. 65, 82; cf. WD 1 fo. 46b). So presum. d. Apr. 1214. Brother of Richard Ruffus II (preb. of Twiford, see below p. 81), and perhaps son of Richard Ruffus I (see G.F. pp. 272, 280).

M. Robert Meldensis

Occ. in cats. between Richard Junior and William Brunus, 'Robertus Meldens'. Prob. not yet can. when occ. [21 Apr. × 30 Dec. 1196] (A/25/643, cal. in Rep. p. 27b), (fn. 3) and after June 1199 (A/35/957).4 Occ. as can. [c. 1214 × Sept. 1216] (Gibbs no. 145), (fn. 5) and 1215/16 (A/39/1369). Occ., not called can., after Nov. 1216 (Moore, St. Barts. I 297 n. 2).

Does not occ. in cats. Said to have been preb. of Holbourn (Statutes p. 141), presum. [1215 × Sept. 1216], while dean.]

Rogeri Bacon Opera . . . Inedita, ed. J. S. Brewer (Rolls ser. xv) pp. 325-6). Entered Franciscan order after Aug. 1235 (see R. B. Brooke, Early Franciscan Government (Cambridge, 1959) p. 162 n.).

Last occ. 9 Dec. 1250 (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 47v, from an original deed formerly in St. Paul's pyx 'B'), and perhaps later, [Nov. 1250 × March 1252/3] (A/36/1022). (fn. 9) Commem. 19 Nov. (Obits. M. Nicholas Lovetot

Occ. in cats. between Ralph de Baldock and Walter de Langeton, 'Nicholaus de Luvetot' (Cat. I) 'Nicholaus Lovetot' (Cat. II). Occ. as preb. of St. Paul's once only: 13 Feb. 1291 (Reg. Nic. IV no. 4179). As M. Nicholas Lovetot, rector of Adlingfleet (Yorks., West), he was ordained pr. at Hythe (Kent) by abp. of Canterbury, June 1291 (Reg. J. Pecham II 31).

M. Walter de Langeton
