Tuesday, June 14th, 1659.

Publick Sales.

ORDERED, That Mr. John Corbet and Mr. Serjeant Earle, or either of them, do bring in the Bill for Confirmation of publick Sales of Lands.

Tythes.

The House being informed, that divers Gentlemen of the Counties of Sommerset, Wilts, and some Parts of Devon, Dorset, and Hampshire, were at the Door;

They were called in: And one of the Petitioners acquainted the House, that he, with the rest, were intrusted on the behalf of divers Well-affected in the Counties of Sommerset, Wilts, and some Part of Devon, Dorset, and Hampshire, to present this their humble Petition: And therewith delivered a Petition: Which, after the Petitioners were withdrawn, was read; and was intituled, "The humble Representation and Petition of many wellaffected Persons in the Counties of Somerset, Wilts, and some Parts of Devon, Dorset, and Hampshire."

The Petitioners being again called in, Mr. Speaker gave them this Answer:

"Gentlemen,"

"The House have read your Petition: And for your good Affections, in the Acknowlegement of them, do give you Thanks: And, for the Matter of Tythes, the House hath commanded me to let you know, that they resolve to give Encouragement to a Godly Preaching Learned Ministry throughout the Nation; And, for that End, to continue the Payment of Tythes, till they can find out some other more equal and comfortable Maintenance for the Ministry, and Satisfaction of the People: Which they intend with all convenient Speed."

The Question being propounded, That it be referred to a Committee, to consider, how a more equal and comfortable Maintenance may be settled for the Ministry, and Satisfaction of the People, than by Tythes; and to have regard to the Interest and Title of Impropriators; and to present their Opinions to this House;

And the Question being put, That this Question be now put;

It passed with the Affirmative.

And the main Question being put; It was

Resolved, That it be referred to a Committee, to consider, how a more equal and comfortable Maintenance may be settled for the Ministry, and Satisfaction of the People, than by Tythes; and to have regard to the Interest and Title of Impropriators; and to present their Opinions to this House.

The Question being put, That it be referred to a Grand Committee;

The House was divided.

The Tellers report, That the Yeas that went forth were 38. And that the Noes that sat were 38.

Mr. Speaker declares himself for the Yeas: So, It was Resolved, That it be referred to a Grand Committee.

Resolved, That the House be resolved into a Grand Committee on this Day Sevennight, upon this Business: And that Mr. Speaker do then forbear to take the Chair.

Irish Commissioners.

Ordered, That the Committee, to prepare Instructions to the Commissioners for Administration of the Government of Ireland, be revived: And do meet this Afternoon, at Two of the Clock, in the Speaker's Chamber; and so de die in diem.

Irish Commissioners.

Colonel Morley reports from the Council of State, That, in regard the Commissioners now in England, named for the Administration of the Government of Ireland, cannot be suddenly dispatched, a Letter be written to Mr. Steele and Mr. Corbet, to take care of the Affairs of Ireland for the present, until the other Commissioners can arrive there: And that a Letter be also written, in pursuance to the Vote of the House, desiring Colonel Henry Cromwell's repairing into England.

Resolved, That this House doth agree with the Council, That a Letter be written to Mr. Steele, and Mr. Corbet, to take care of the Affairs of Ireland, till the other Commissioners can arrive there: And that a Letter be also written, in pursuance of the Vote of this House, desiring Colonel Henry Cromwell's repairing into England.

Resolved, That the Council of State do prepare the said Letters, and that Mr. Speaker do sign the said Letters so to be prepared by the Council.

Navy.

Colonel Thompson reports from the Commissioners of the Admiralty and Navy, the Names of Lieutenants to serve in Ships: Viz.

Ordered, That these Names be taken into Consideration To-morrow Morning.

House to sit.

Resolved, That the House do sit this Afternoon, about Money.

Indemnity.

Ordered, That this House be resolved into a Grand Committee To-morrow Morning, upon the Bill for Indemnity: And that Mr. Speaker do forbear to take the Chair.

They were called in: And, being come to the Clerk's Table, in manner usual, Mr. Speaker acquainted them with the great Trust and Confidence that the Parliament reposed in them; and that the Parliament expected Faithfulness and Obedience from them to the Parliament and Commonwealth: And did thereupon deliver unto them several Commissions: Viz.

To Colonel John Hewson, his Commission to be Colonel of a Regiment of Foot:

To Lieutenant-Colonel John Duckenfeild, his Commission to be Lieutenant-Colonel of that Regiment:

Ordered, That Mr. Holland, Mr. Harby, Colonel Barker, Mr. Say, Colonel Crompton, Alderman Atkins, Mr. Oldsworth, Mr. Jo. Goodwyn, Sir John Bourchier, Mr. Trenchard, Mr. Leaman, be added to the Committee to whom the Business touching Colonel Jones is referred.

Tower of London.

A Commission for Colonel Thomas Fitch to be Lieutenant of the Tower of London, was this Day read; and, upon the Question, agreed unto: And, It is

Ordered, That the said Commission be ingrossed in Parchment; and that, after the same be ingrossed, Mr. Speaker do sign the same.

Assessment.

Colonel Downes reports from the Committee for Inspection of the Treasury, a Bill for the Payment of the several Sums of Thirty-five thousand Pounds by the Month, imposed upon England; Six thousand Pounds by the Month, upon Scotland; and Nine thousand Pounds by the Month, upon Ireland: To be paid for Twelve Months, commencing the Twenty-fourth of June One thousand Six hundred Fifty-nine; was this Day read the First time.

Resolved, That this Bill be now read a Second time.

The said Bill was now read the Second time, accordingly; and, upon the Question, committed unto Colonel Downes, Sir Henry Mildmay, Mr. Lister, Sir James Harrington, Sir Wm. Assumed Titles, &c.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee for Inspection, to take especial Care that such Persons who have assumed the Titles of Honour, Dignities, and Precedencies heretofore conferred on them by the late King, since the same were taken away by Act of this present Parliament, do pay the several Sums of Money by them forfeited: And that the said Committee do also examine, Whether Summons issued to the said Persons out of the Court of Chancery, according to the Direction of the said Act; and whether they have brought in their Patents, accordingly; and to report their Opinion to this House, How the said Monies may be employed to the best Advantage of the Commonwealth: And that the said Committee do offer an Act to this House, for strengthening the former Act, and also to take away all Honours conferred by the late King's Son, or any other Person, since the Time limited in the former Act.

Officers of Customs.

The humble Petition of John Coltman, Humfry Gifford, Robert Higgins, Theophilus Colcott, and several of the Officers of the Custom-house, London, was this Day read.

Ordered, That this Petition, with the Accompt, be referred to the Committee of Inspections; to examine the Business; and report their Opinion therein to this House: And that Mr. Blagrave and Mr. Robinson be added to that Committee.

Ordered, That it be referred to the same Committee, to examine, What Sums of Money are due to the Commonwealth for Procurations and Synodals, and by whom; and in whose Hands the said Monies lie; and to state the Matter of Fact; and report their Opinion therein to this House.

Agent from Hamburgh.

Letters Credential of the Agent of the Town of Hamborough, directed, "Supremæ Potestati, Parliamento Reipublicæ Angliæ," dated, "Given under the Signet of the said City, 30 Maii, Anno 1659," was this Day read.

Resolved, That this House doth approve of Lieutenant Wm. Illyn to be Lieutenant in the Regiment of Colonel Wm. Sydenham.

Resolved, That this House doth approve of Lieutenant Richard Johnson to be one of the Officers in the said Regiment, instead of David Francis.

Resolved, That it be recommended to the said Commissioners for Nomination of Officers to nominate the said David Francis to be Lieutenant of a Company in Ireland.
