Monday, the 15th of June, 1657.

Confirming Acts.

A BILL, intituled, An Act for Confirmation of several Acts and Ordinances made since the Twentieth of April 1653, was this Day read the First time; and ordered to be read the Second time Tomorrow Morning.

Petition and Advice.

The humble additional and explanatory Petition and Advice of the Knights, Citizens, and Burgesses, now assembled in the Parliament of this Commonwealth, was this Day read the Second time.

Ordered, That the Clause in this additional and explanatory Petition and Advice, concerning the Protestants in Munster, be committed to Mr. Secretary, Colonel Clerk, Colonel Zanchy, Colonel John Jones, Colonel Cooper, Major Morgan, Major-General Whalley, General Disbrow, Alderman Tigh, Mr. Lloyd, Colonel Sidenham, to withdraw presently; and to bring it in, sitting the House.

Ordered, That this Clause touching the Excluding of Persons of Scotland, be also committed to the same Committee: And that Major-General Haynes, Mr. Lockhart, Sir James Macdowell, Colonel Cooper, Mr. Smyth, Mr. Stewart, Major-General Goff, Major-General Lilborne, Major-General Bridges, Major-General Kelsey, be added to this Committee.

Places of Trust.

A Bill for better choosing of Persons into Places of Trust, was this Day read the Second time; and committed to Mr. Godfrey, Master of the Rolls, Mr. West, Mr. Secretary, Mr. Burton, Mr. Audley, Colonel Clerk, General Disbrow, Sir Tho. Wroth, Lord Strickland, Mr. Bampfeild, Lieutenant of the Tower, Mr. Downing, Alderman Foote, Sir Christofer Pack, Mr. Dunch, Sir Wm. Roberts, Mr. Lloyd, Mr. Nath. Bacon, Mr. Trenchard, Mr. Lawrence, Colonel Chadwick, Mr. Vincent, Colonel Edwards, Mr. Grove, Captain Hatsell, Major-General Lilburne, Sir Rich. Onsloe, Mr. Poole, Mr. Goodwin, Sir Gilbert Pickering, Mr. Lister, Mr. Fowell, Colonel Chapcott, Alderman Gildart, Sir William Strickland: To meet To-morrow Morning, at Seven of the Clock, in the Speaker's Chamber.

Petition and Advice.

Colonel Clerk reports from the Committee appointed to withdraw, an Amendment to the additional and explanatory Petition and Advice; being a Clause to be inserted, instead of the Clause therein, touching the Proviso in the Fourth Article: Which was read.

And, after an Amendment at the Table; viz. That instead of the Words "Person and Persons," these Words should be inserted; viz. "English and Scottish Protestants;"

The same, so amended, was agreed.

The House proceeded to read the rest of the Petition, in Parts.

Colonel Sidenham reports from the same Committee, a Clause, instead of the First Clause in the said additional and explanatory Petition and Advice: Which was read: And there being an Amendment offered to this Amendment, in these Words; viz. "or in any other Places of Publick Trust, relating unto the Fourth and Thirteenth Article of the Petition and Advice:"

And the Question being propounded, That these Words be added to this Amendment;

And the Question being put, That this Question be now put;

The House was divided.

The Noes went forth.

So it passed with the Affirmative.

And the main Question being now put; It was

Resolved, That these Words be added to this Amendment; viz. "or in any other Places of publick Trust, relating unto the Fourth and Thirteenth Article of the Petition and Advice:" And the Amendment, reported with that Addition, was, upon the Question, agreed: And all the rest of the Petition passed by Parts.

Resolved, That this additional and explanatory Petition and Advice, so amended, be ingrossed.

Major Walters.

Resolved, That it be offered to his Highness, as the Desire of the Parliament, that his Highness, and the Council, will take into Consideration the Business of Major Walters, that some effectual Course for his Relief be forthwith taken.

Earls Calender and Cranston.

A Bill for the Pardoning of the Earl of Calender, and the Lord Cranston, was this Day read the First and Second time.

Resolved, That these Words; viz. "And that Pardons be granted unto the Earl of Calender, and Lord Cranston, accordingly;" be added to this Bill.

Resolved, That this Bill, thus amended, shall be committed to Lord Tweddale, Lord Strickland, Mr. Stuart, General Disbrow, Colonel Purefoy, Colonel Gorge, Lord Deputy Fleetwood, Sir James Mackdowell, Mr. Burton, Colonel Beomond, Mr. Goodwyn, Major-General Whalley, Dr. Clerges, Commissary Lockart, Mr. Smyth, Colonel Shapcott, Mr. Poole, Mr. Attorney-General, Mr. Moody, Mr. Bodurday, Mr. Carey, Mr. Disbrow, Sir Thomas Pryde: This Committee are to meet To-morrow Morning, at Seven of Clock, in the Speaker's Chamber.

Resolved, That the House shall sit Morning and Afternoon this Week.

Sir W. Dick's Children.

Ordered, That the distressed Condition of Sir Wm. Dick's Children and Creditors be referred to Colonel Shapcott, Mr. Smith, Mr. Lawrence, and Mr. Gorges; to offer to the House some Expedient for some Relief to them, until the Parliament meet again.

Private Business.

Resolved, That all private Business be excluded for this Week.

Bill of Indemnity.

RESOLVED, That the Committee for the Bill for Indemnity be revived, to sit To-morrow Morning, at Seven of the Clock, in the Speaker's Chamber.

Assessment.

Resolved, That it be referred to the Grand Committee, for the Bills of Assessments, for the Shortening of the same, if they find it expedient to have reference to the last Act for the Three Months Assessments, as well for the Powers, as for the Commissioners: With Power to add some more Commissioners for the County of Wiltes.

Resolved, That the House be resolved into a Grand Committee, to sit upon the Bills for Assessments, and upon the Bills for Excise and Customs: And that Mr. Speaker do now leave the Chair.-

Probate of Wills.

Resolved, That the Bill for Probate of Wills be read on Thursday Morning the Third time.-

Mr. Bacon reports from the Grand Committee for the Bill of Assessments, That they desire Leave to sit again on that Bill To-morrow Morning, at Ten of the Clock.

Resolved, That the House be resolved into a Grand Committee, upon Wednesday Morning, at Nine of the Clock, upon the Bill for Assessments.

Customs.

Captain Baines reports from the Grand Committee upon the Bill for the Customs, That that Committee desire Leave to sit, To-morrow Morning, at Nine of the Clock.

Resolved, That the House be resolved into a Grand Committee, To-morrow Morning, at Nine of the Clock, upon the Bill for the Customs.

Privilege.

Upon Information this Day made unto the Parliament, That, since the Beginning of this present Parliament, one Edward Dowdall and Amy his Wife, as Administrators of John Dowde, deceased, have obtained out of the Chancery in Ireland an Extent upon a Statute-Staple, pretended to have been acknowledged, in the Year 1626, by Edward Jans unto the said John Dowde, for Payment of Two thousand Pounds: Whereupon the Sheriff of the County of West-Meath hath extended the Site, Ambite, and Precinct of the Abbey and Monastery of Multifernon, with a Mill, and certain Parks of Meadow and Pasture, being the Possessions of Colonel John Clerk, a Member of this present Parliament, and in the Possession of his Under-Tenants, contrary to the Privilege of Parliament, the Parliament doth declare, That all Proceedings in Ireland upon the said Statute-Staple, since the Seventeenth of September 1656, as against the said Colonel John Clerk, or any Lands or Estates belonging unto him in the Tenure or Possession of his Under-Tenants, are null and void; and doth order, That the same be vacated: And it is also ordered, That the Lord Chancellor of Ireland be, and is hereby authorized and required to cause the same to be vacated; and also to issue forth a Writ of Restitution, or take such other Course as he shall think fit, to restore the said Colonel John Clerk, and his UnderTenants, to such Possession of the Premises, as he or they had and held on the 17th Day of September last.

Ordered, That the said Edward Dowdall be sent for in Custody as a Delinquent.
