Tuesday, the 28th of October, 1651.

Prayers.

Preachers thanked.

ORDERED, by the Parliament, That the Thanks of this House be given to Mr. Owen, (Dean of Christ Church in Oxford) for his great Pains taken in his Sermon before the Parliament at Margarett's, Wetsminster, on Friday the 24th Day of this instant October, being a Day set apart for publick Thanksgiving; and that he be desired to print his Sermon; and that he have the like Privilege in printing the same, as others in like Case have usually had: And that the Lord General do give him the Thanks of this House, and desire him to print his Sermon accordingly.

Ordered, That the Thanks of this House be given to Mr. Thomas Goodwyn, (President of Magdalen College in Oxford) for his great Pains taken in his Sermon preached before the Parliament at Margarett's, Westminster, on Friday the 24th Day of this instant October, being a Day set apart for publick Thanksgiving; and that he be desired to print his Sermon; and that he have the like Privilege in printing, as others in like Case have usually had: And that the Lord General do give him the Thanks of this House, and desire him to print his Sermon, accordingly.

Preachers appointed.

Resolved, That Mr. Owen, Dean of Christ-Church and Mr. Thomas Goodwyn. President of Magdalen College in the University of Oxford, be appointed to preach every Lord's Day in the Afternoon in Marye's Church, in their Turns.

Resolved, That the Masters of Art do preach every Week, in their Turns, in Marie's Church in the University of Oxon, all the Year long; and that it be referred to the Vice-chancellor, and other the Heads of the Colleges in the said University, that they do appoint One Day in a Week, which they shall judge most convenient, for the said Master of Arts to preach, in their Turns, all the Year long; and to take Care that the same be done upon that Day, accordingly.

Sitting of this Parliament.

The House, according to former Order, was resolved into a Grand Committee, upon the Bill for setting a Time certain to the Sitting of this Parliament, and for Calling of a new Parliament.

Mr. Speaker left the Chair.

Mr. Ellis took the Chair.

Mr. Speaker resumed the Chair.

Mr. Ellis reports, from the Grand Committee, That the Grand Committee do desire Leave to sit on Thursday next come Seven-night.

Resolved, That the House be resolved into a Grand Committee on this Day Sevennight, upon the said Bill.

Navy and Army.

Resolved, That Thursday next be appointed to hear the Reports concerning the Navy and Army.

Member admitted.

Resolved, That Robert Bennett Esq; (being elected and returned a Burgess for the Borough of Portpigan, alias Westlow, in the County of Cornwall) be admitted to sit in this House as a Member thereof.

Declaration; Scotch Affairs.

The House, according to former Order, resumed the Debate upon the Declaration reported from the Council of State.

The fourth Particular was read.

Resolved, That these words be inserted before the first Word in the second Line; that is to say, "of the Scottish Nation."

The Question being put, That these Words be inserted, videlicet, "which they may now extricate and free themselves from," do stand;

It passed with the Negative.

Resolved, That the Blanks in this Clause be filled up with these Words, "within Thirty Days after the Publication hereof in the several Places."

And the Clause, so amended, was, with the Alteration of the Word, "those," instead of the Word "such," in the first Line, assented unto.

The last Clause in this Declaration being read, and the Question being put, that this Clause be Part of the Declaration;

It passed with the Negative.

The House, according to former Order, returned to resume the Debate upon the Preamble in this Declaration: And,

Resolved, upon the Question, That, instead of the whole Preamble in this Declaration, these Words be inserted:

"The Parliament of the Commonwealth of England, esteeming it a necessary Care and Obligation that lies upon them, to improve the Power which God hath now given them for the Advancement of the Glory of God, and the Good and Welfare of the whole Island, have thought fit to nominate and appoint Commissioners forthwith to repair into Scotland for effecting the same: And do hereby declare, &c."

And the said Declaration so amended, being put to the Question, was assented unto.

Resolved, That it be referred to the Council of State, to give Order for the Printing of this Declaration.

Resolved, That it be referred to the Council of State, forthwith to take Care, that Money be provided for defraying the Charges of the Commissioners in their Journey into Scotland, and of other incident Charges, from time to time, during the Commissioners Stay in Scotland.
