Die Mercurii, 26 Julii, 1648. Die Publicæ Humiliationis

Preachers thanked.

ORDERED, That Sir Robert Harley do, from this House give Thanks unto Mr. Marshall, for the great Pains he took in his Sermon preached on this Day, at Margarett's Westminster, before the House of Commons; it being a Day of Publick Humiliation: And that he be desired to print his Sermon: Wherein he is to have the like Privilege of Printing of it, as others in the like Kind usually have had.

Ordered, That Mr. Boys do, from this House, give Thanks to Dr. Annely, for the great Pains he took in his Sermon preached on this Day, at Margarett's Westminster, before the House of Commons; it being a Day of Publick Humiliation: And that he be desired to print his Sermon: And he is to have the like Privilege in Printing of it, as others in the like Kind usually have had.

Ordered, That Mr. John Nelthorp do, from this House, desire Mr. Bolton to preach before the House of Commons, at Margaret's Westminster, the next Monthly Fast Day.

Ordered, That Colonel Leigh do, from this House, desire Mr. Strong do preach before the House of Commons, at Margaret's Westminster, the next Monthly Fast Day.

Ordered, That Sir John Owen be committed close Prisoner to Windsore Castle, for High Treason; and for Suspicion of Murdering of Wm. Lloyd Esquire, late High Sheriff of the County of Carnarvon.

Serjeant at Arms.

Ordered, That it be referred to Mr. Wilcox, Mr. Broad, Mr. Bond, Mr. Richardson, and Mr. Prince, the Auditors, or any Two of them, to audite and state the Accompts, of Edward Birkhead Esquire, Serjeant at Arms, that attends this House, of his several Disbursments for the Service of this House; and to certify the same, with all Speed, to the Committee of the Revenue: And the said Committee are ordered forthwith to pay to the said Edward Birkhead, what shall appear to be due unto him upon the said Certificate.

Treason, &c.

Ordered, That the Committee, formerly appointed to consider of Sir John Owen, bring in an Ordinance for making Treason and Murder triable in any County of the Kingdom.

Ordered, That the Ordinance be brought in on Monday Morning next.

Mr. Prideaux, Mr. John Corbett Mr. Maynard, Mr. Saye, Mr. Lechmere, are added to the said Committee: And the Care hereof is more particularly committed to Mr. Prideaux.

The said Committee are to meet on Friday next in the Afternoon, in the Queen's Court.

Incest, &c.

Ordered, That the Committee for the Order for Incest, &c. do sit To-morrow in the Afternoon; and bring in the Order on Wednesday next.

Sabbath.

Ordered, That Mr. Samuell Browne be enjoined to bring in the Ordinance for the Sabbath on Wednesday next.

St. Alban's Minister.

An Ordinance for settling competent Maintenance upon an able Minister, of the Parish Church of St. Alban's in the County of Hertford was this Day read the Second time; and upon the Question, passed; and ordered to be sent to the Lords for their Concurrence.

Mr. Foxwist is to carry it to the Lords.

Playhouses.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee of the Militia of Westminster, with such Forces as they shall think sit, to take care, that the Stages, Boxes, Scaffolds, Seats, and Forms, in the several Playhouses within the County of Middlesex, be forthwith taken down; and the Materials thereof made unuseful for that Service for the future: And that Major General Skippon be desired to advise with the said Committee about the same; and to assist them with Horse, if Need be.

The Lord's Day, &c.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee where Mr. Scott has the Chair, who are to sit de die in diem, to put in Execution the several Ordinances for Observation of the Lord's Day, and Fast Days; and for suppressing of Stage Plays and Interludes; and to receive Informations; and to examine the Neglects and the Defaults therein, and redress the same; and to send for Persons, Witnesses, Papers, Records.

Ordered, That Sir John Owen be committed close Prisoner to the Gatehouse, for this Night: And that no Person be permitted to speak with him: And that the Keeper of the Gatehouse do re-deliver him, the said Sir John, to the Serjeant at Arms, or his Deputy, To-morrow Morning.
