Prayers.

Fast Day Collection.

ORDERED, That Sir Robert Pye, Mr. Wheeler, and Mr. Bell, do dispose of the Monies collected at the last Fast here, and now in the Serjeant's Hand, to the distressed Widows that are necessitous, in proportion to their Necessities.

Army Arrears.

The House proceeded to the Consideration of the Report made by Sir Thomas Dacres, touching the State of the Arrears and Accompts of divers Officers and Soldiers referred to that Committee; the Officers of Colonel Harveye's Regiment to be added to Potter's List; and those other Persons presented by Sir Thomas Dacres, in Two Papers, under the Names of Mr. Pococke and Captain Gething.

Resolved, &c. That the Sum of One-and-twenty thousand Pounds be charged upon the Excise in Course, to be paid unto the Officers and Soldiers that stand upon this Report.

Resolved, &c. That the Sum of One-and-twenty thousand Pounds be charged upon the Sequestrations of the Kingdom, to be paid unto the Officers and Soldiers that stand upon this Report.

It is further Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee, from whence the Report was made, Which ways present Monies may be raised upon this Credit, for those that are in Town, and not against the Parliament: And are to bring in Ordinances to this Purpose.

They are further to consider of some Means, by conferring with those well-affected Officers, or otherwise, What of the Officers and Soldiers in these Lists are engaged against: And they are presently to go upon this Business.

They are further to consider of all fitting Ways and Means to improve the Sequestrations, by setting longer Leases, and raising Fines, or otherwise, as they shall find convenient; and to bring in an Ordinance to this Purpose.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee to give such Satisfaction as they shall think fit, out of the Fortytwo thousand Pounds, to Wm. Potter, for the Pains and Charges he has been at in the Service of the Lists.

Rewards to Messengers.

Ordered, That Ten Pounds be given to John Williams the Messenger, that brought the Letter from the General to Mr. Speaker; and Twenty Pounds amongst the rest of the Messengers that brought the Intelligence of the Victory at Maidstone: The said Sums to be charged upon Haberdashers Hall.

The Lords Concurrence to be desired herein.

Ordered, That the Sum of One thousand Pounds be forthwith paid, by the Committee at Goldsmiths Hall, unto the Committee at Derby House; to be by them disposed, and bestowed upon Messengers and Intelligencers that are or shall be, from time to time, employed upon Messages and Intelligences.

Victory at Maidstone.

Ordered, That the Letter, sent by the Lord General to Mr. Speaker, be sent and communicated to the Lord Mayor and Common Council of the City of London: And that the same be returned back again.

Ordered, That, on the next Lord's Day, the Fourth of this instant June, Thanks be given unto Almighty God, by the several Ministers, in the Churches and Chapels within the Cities of London and Westminster, and late Lines of Communication, for his great Blessing upon the Parliament Forces, under the Command of his Excellency the Lord Fairefax, against the Kentish Forces, at the Fight near and at Maidstone, and in the Taking in of Maidstone: And the Lord Mayor is desired to give timely Notice hereof to the several and respective Ministers within the several Places aforesaid.

Colonel Venne is desired to acquaint the Lord Mayor herewith.

Letters read.

A Letter, of the One-and-thirtieth Day of May 1648, from Ketton, from Sir Thomas Barnardiston, was this Day read.

A Letter from Newmarkett, of the Thirtieth of May 1648, from John Clarke, Alderman of St. Edmond's Bury, was also this Day read.

Information to be given to the City.

Ordered, That the Committee, formerly appointed to treat with the Common Council, and Committee of the Militia, upon the mutual Defence and Safety of the Parliament and City, do forthwith go thither; and acquaint them with the Informations this House has received concerning the imminent Danger now approaching; to understand what Strength can be expected from them upon this Occasion.

Affairs in Essex.

Ordered, That the Gentlemen of Essex do forthwith withdraw, and prepare, and offer to the House, such Things as they shall think necessary for disabusing the People of Essex, and settling the Distempers in that County.

Answer from Lords.

Sir John Danvers brings Answer from the Lords, That the Lords have appointed my Lord of Denbigh to accompany any Committee this House pleaseth to send to the Common Council of the City of London: And, to the Order touching Mr. Bland, the Lords will send Answer by Messengers of their own.

Powder Mills.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee at Derby House, to consider of the Information given, touching the Powder Mills near Bowe, and the Danger of surprising thereof; to take some speedy Course to prevent the same.

Post Meridiem.

Affairs in Kent.

A LETTER from Rochester, of the Thirtieth of May 1648, from the Mayor and Gentlemen of Rochester, directed to the Lord Mayor, Aldermen, and Commonalty of the City of London; and another Letter from the Gentlemen and Freeholders of the County of Kent, directed to the said Lord Mayor, Aldermen, and Commonalty, of the Thirtieth of May 1648; were both this Day read.

Messengers committed.

Ordered, That Francis Bond and Peter Hancocke, the Messengers that brought the Letters, from those that are risen in Arms at Rochester, to the Lord Mayor, Aldermen, and Commonalty of the City of London, be committed to the Serjeant at Arms that attends the Service of this House.

Letters to be sent to the City.

Ordered, That the Letters be sent to the Committee now with the Common Council: And they desired to return to the Lord Mayor and Common Council with the Thanks of this House for their Respects unto them: And they are to make use of these Letters to the Committee of the Militia, in order to the Safety and Defence of the Parliament, City, and Borough of Southwarke. And Mr. Snelling and Colonel Thompson are desired to employ their Endeavours with Major General Skippon, and the Committee of the Militia, for the present Defence of the Borough of Southwarke.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee of Complaints, to examine the Messengers which brought the Letters from Rochester to the Lord Mayor of London.

Affairs in Essex.

Sir Harbottle Grimston reports the Draught of a Letter, to be sent from the House to the Gentlemen of Essex: The which was read twice over; and then in Parts; and upon the Question, assented unto; and ordered to be signed by Mr. Speaker.

Resolved, &c. That Mr. Charles Rich be desired presently to go down, with this Letter, to the Gentlemen of Essex, and improve his best Interests for quieting all Distempers there.

Isle of Wight.

Ordered, That the Sum of Two thousand Five hundred Pounds, assigned to be paid to the Committee at Derby House, for the Service and Safety of the Isle of Wight, be paid unto Colonel Robert Hamond, Governor of the Isle of Wight, his Assignee or Assigns.

Thanks to Ld. General.

Ordered, That a Letter of the Thanks of this House, to be signed by Mr. Speaker, be sent to the Lord General, for his great Pains and Care taken in the Managing of the Business, and defeating the Enemy, in the County of Kent: And Sir John Evelyn and Sir Peter Wentworth are desired to carry the same to the Lord General, accordingly.

Gayer's, &c. Impeachment.

The Question being propounded, That this House do not proceed upon the Impeachment against Sir John Gayer Knight, late Lord Mayor of the City of London;

And the Question being put, That this Question be now put;

It passed with the Affirmative.

Resolved, &c. That this House will proceed no further upon the Impeachment against Sir John Gayer Knight, late Lord Mayor of the City of London.

Resolved, &c. That this House will proceed no further upon the Impeachment against Thomas Adams, Alderman of the City of London.

Resolved, &c. That this House will proceed no further upon the Impeachment against John Langham, Alderman of the City of London.

Resolved, &c. That this House will proceed no further upon the Impeachment against James Bunce, Alderman of the City of London.-

Parliament Guard.

Upon Sir John Danvers' Report from the Committee at Derby House;

It is Ordered, That Colonel Rosseter be desired to get together One hundred and Twenty Horse, in pursuance of the Vote of this House, to be a Guard this Night to these Parts.-

Resolved, &c. That Mr. Edward Bainton be forthwith admitted to his Attendance in the House.

Resolved, &c. That no further Proceeding be had by this House, upon the Impeachment transmitted to the Lords against Sir John Maynard.

Propositions to the King.

Ordered, That on Monday Morning next, at Ten of Clock, the House do take into Consideration the Alterations, returned from the Lords, to the Three Propositions: And that Mr. Speaker do put the House in mind thereof.

Officers Petition.

The House being informed, that divers Colonels, and other Officers, that have formerly served the Parliament, were at the Door; desiring to present a Petition to the House;

They were called in: And Colonel Tovey presented a Petition, styled, "The humble Petition of several Officers, formerly employed in the Parliament's Service."

The which (the Petitioners being withdrawn) was read.

The Petitioners were again called in: And Mr. Speaker, by the Command of the House, acquainted them, That the House had read their Petition: And, for their good Services, their modest Desires and Expressions in their Petition, suitable to Men of Honour, and good Affections to the Parliament, he was commanded to give them the Thanks of this House: Which he accordingly did.

Barwis', &c. Arrears.

Ordered, That the Sum of Two thousand Seven hundred and Eighty-five Pounds Six Shillings and Two-pence, Arrears due to Colonel Thomas Barwis, Captain Francis Bristoe, Captain Henry Fetherston, Captain John Bristoe, Captain Thomas Enbancke, Lieutenant Vriall, be paid unto them; and be charged upon the Excise, in Course: And that an Ordinance be brought in to that Purpose: And that Richard Tolson and Francis Allen Esquires do prepare an Ordinance accordingly.

Parliament Guard.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee of the Army, to consider, What Sum of Money is fit to be advanced to Colonel Rosseter, and the Hundred and Twenty Soldiers, appointed to guard these Parts; and to consider of a Way how to raise the same; and make Report thereof to this House.
