Prayers.

Tonage and Poundage.

AN Ordinance for continuing the Tonage and Poundage, and the Commissioners of the Customs, with a Blank for the Time, was read the First and Second time.

Resolved, &c. That this Ordinance shall continue from the 26th of March 1647, inclusive, to the 26th of March 1648, inclusive.

And then the Ordinance, upon the Question, passed; and it is ordered to be sent unto the Lords, for their Concurrence, by Mr. Greene.

Leave of Absence.

Ordered, &c. That Mr. Grantham, a Member of this House, shall have Leave to go into the Country.

Coventry Garison.

A Letter from Coventry, of Nono Martii 1646, from the Committee there, was this Day read: And

It is Ordered, upon the Question, That when the Garisons of Warwickshire come to be considered, that then the House do take into Consideration this Letter, and the Petitions from Coventrie, this Day presented: And that Mr. Speaker do put the House in mind hereof.

Message from Lords.

A Message from the Lords, by Dr. Aylett and Dr. Heath;

The Lords have commanded us to deliver unto you an Ordinance for making John Bradshawe Esquire Chief Justice of Chester: A Report from the Committee of the Admiralty, concerning the Names of the Commanders of the next Summer's Fleet: An Ordinance to make John Arthur Keeper of Sandifort Castle, upon a Report from the Committee of the Safety: An Ordinance for making some original Seals for some Counties of Wales: A Petition of Colonel Simon Rugeley: A Petition of the Lord Howard, of Escrigg: which they, in an especial Manner, recommended to the Consideration of this House: An Ordinance for Sale of Part of the Earl of Worcester's Lands, for Payment of a publick Debt to Mr. Hill and Mr. Pennoyer; the which came from this House; and is returned with some Amendments; in which they desire the Concurrence of this House. The Lords recommend Mr. Boulton and Mr. Halton to be of the Assembly of Divines: They do likewise recommend Philip Venman Esquire to be one of the Deputy Lieutenants of Lancashire. They desire your Concurrence in these. They desire to put the House in mind of the Business formerly sent concerning Captain Morgan, who did good Service in the Reducing of South Wales: To put the House in mind of the Lord Morleye's Petition, formerly sent to this House. They have sent to your Consideration a Petition of Officers Wives: A Petition of the Wardens of the Tower: An Ordinance for Colonel Kirle: An Ordinance for Sir John Bridges: The Petition of Wm. Sikes.

Resolved, &c. That this Message be taken into Consideration on Monday next, in the Afternoon: And that the House do sit on Monday next, at Two post Meridiem, on purpose to take this Message into Consideration.

Garisons.

The Question was propounded, That such Persons as are at present Governors of the Garisons that are voted to be kept up, appointed to be so by both Houses, shall be continued, unless some Exceptions be taken unto them.

And the Question being put, Whether this Question shall be now put.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth nominate and appoint Captain Wm. Bewley to be chief Officer of the Forces appointed to keep Cockermouth Castle.

Resolved, &c. That Colonel Jones do continue Governor of Chester, and the Castle there, till the House do take further Order.

Resolved, &c. That Colonel Ralphe Welden do continue Governor of Plymouth Fort, and Island.

Ordered, &c. That the humble Remonstrance of Colonel Ralph Weldon, Governor of Plymouth, now presented, be referred to the Consideration of the Committee of the West.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth approve of Major Gibbons to be Governor of the Castle of Exon.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth approve of Captain John Gorges to command the Fort at Exmouth.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth approve of Captain Wm. Skutt to be Governor of the Town of Poole.

The Question was propounded, That this House doth nominate and appoint Lieutenant Colonel Robert Cocker to be Governor of Weymouth and Melcombe Regis.

And the Question being put, Whether this Question shall be now put;

It passed with the Affirmative.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth nominate and appoint Lieutenant Colonel Robert Cocker to be Governor of Weymouth and Melcombe Regis.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth approve of Captain Elias Bond to be Captain of Portland Castle.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth appoint Captain John Arthur to be Captain of Sandisfoote Castle.

Resolved, &c. That Brouncksea Castle be under the Command of the Governor of Poole.

Guernsey, &c.

Resolved, &c. That it be referred to the Committee of the Admiralty and Cinque Ports, to take care that Shiping may be speedily and seasonably sent for the Safety of the Isle of Guernsey; and to prevent any Prejudice that may come to it from France; and to carry with them Powder and other Ammunition necessary; and to deliver it, if they shall see Cause; that they may do it for the Safety of the Island.

Resolved, &c. That Lieutenant Colonel Russell do execute all such Powers and Authorities in the Isle of Guernesey, to all Intents and Purposes, as formerly he did under the Earl of Warwick, until further Order.

Ordered, &c. That the Committee of the Navy do take Order, That One hundred Pounds may be sent for the Service of the Isle of Sarke.

Ordered, &c. That it be referred to the Members of this House that are of the Committee of both Kingdoms, to consider of and provide for the Safety of the Isles of Guernesey and Jersey; and of some effectual Means for the speedy reducing those Isles to the Obedience of the Parliament; and for the settling of those Isles in the best and most quiet Condition: And, in the Consideration of this Business, they are to take Consideration of Colonel Lydcott: And are to report their Opinions to the House on Thursday next, What is fit to be done upon Consideration of the whole Business.

Garisons.

Resolved, &c. That Colonel General Poynts, as he did formerly command the Garison of Yorke, so now he shall command Clifford's Tower.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth approve of Colonel Mathew Boynton to continue Governor of Scarborough Garison.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth approve of Sir Thomas Fairefaxe Knight, General of the Parliament's Forces, to continue Governor of Hull, and all the Forts and Works.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth approve of Colonel Thomas Morgan to continue Governor of Gloucester.

Hereford respited.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth approve of Captain Boys to continue Governor of Dover Castle.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth nominate and approve of Lieutenant Colonel John Ashurst to be Governor of Leverpoole.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth approve of Lieutenant Colonel Dodson to be Governor of Croyland.

Resolved, &c. That the House do now rise: And that the House do proceed in the Consideration of the Garisons that are voted to be kept up, according to the former Orders in this Business, next after the Business of Ireland, on Monday next.
