House of Commons Journal Volume 4: 29 April 1646

Die Mercurii, 29 Aprilis, 1646, Die Publicæ Humiliationis.

Ordered, That Mr. Jennor and Sir Peter Wentworth do, from this House, give Thanks to Mr. Nalton and Mr. Owen, for the great Pains they took in the Sermons they preached this Day, at the Intreaty of this House, at St. Margaret's, Westminster, it being the Day of Publick Humiliation; and to desire them to print their Sermons: And they are to have the like Liberty in Printing of them, as others in the like kind usually have had.

Ordered, That Colonel Moore and Sir Thomas Barnardiston do, from this House, desire Mr. Herrick and Mr. John Ward to preach before the Commons, at St. Margaret's, Westminster, the next Fast-Day.

Ordered, That an Ordinance be brought in to enable the Justices of the Peace to punish such as do not observe the Fast-Days: And Mr. Snelling and Mr. Ball are to prepare and bring in this Ordinance.

Ordered, That a List be presented to Mr. Speaker, of the Names of all such Members of this House as have not taken the Covenant; and that those Members be injoined to take the Covenant the next Fast-Day.

A Letter from Colonel Fleetwood, of 28 Aprilis 1646, concerning the King's going from Oxford, was this Day read.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Members of this House that are of the Assembly of Divines, to prepare and bring in an Ordinance for the Prevention of the Growth and Spreading of Heresies and Blasphemies, and for the Punishment of Divulgers and Assertors of them: And that Mr. Bacon be added to the said Committee, as to this Business: And that Mr. Bacon do take care hereof.

Ordered, That it be referred to the said Committee, or any Five of them, to consider of, and bring in an Ordinance for Convicting, and further Punishing, of Popish Recusants.

Ordered, That it be especially recommended to the Lord Mayor, to examine the Disturbance given to a Minister Yesterday in the Afternoon, whilst he was preaching at Christ-Church: And that he do take care, that the Laws against Disturbers of Ministers in the Church be put in due Execution.

The Question was propounded, Whether the Informations given to this House, concerning Mr. Jenkins, shall be referred to Examination:
