PRAYERS.

Lord Lisle

WHEREAS my Lord Lisle hath received a Letter from his Majesty, to attend him at Oxforde; It is this Day Ordered, That my Lord Lisle be enjoined to attend the House, and not to go to Oxford, nor depart the Service of the House, without the special Leave of the House.

Aldgate Lecturer.

Ordered, That Mr. Sympson, who is Lecturer at Aldgate Church, be discharged of his Lecture, and not permitted to preach there, or any-where else, till this House give further Order; and that the Parishioners of Aldgate be required forthwith to make Choice of another Lecturer: And the Churchwardens are required to see this Order put in Execution.

Covenant and League.

Lord Lisle, Mr. Hinningham, Colonel Venn, Mr. Harris, Mr. Harbert, Mr. Skynner, did this Day take and subscribe the Covenant and League.

Message to Lords.

Ordered, That Sir Chr. Yelverton do go to the Lords with this Message; To acquaint them, that this House has agreed to the Propositions concerning Scotland, with the Amendments sent down from the Lords: And to desire them to take the Covenant; for that this House conceives, the Safety of the Kingdom much depends upon it.

Merchant Strangers.

The Petition of the Merchant Strangers, of the Entercourse; and a Certificate from the Merchant Adventurers, on their Behalf; was read; and referred to the Committee for Advance of Monies, in Haberdashers Hall; who are to examine the Business: And the Petitioners are required to attend that Committee on Friday next.

Ordered, That the Petition of Eliz. Clement and Anne Clement, Daughters and Administrators of the Goods and Chattels of Anne Goffe, their Mother, late of Bristoll, deceased; and the Petition of Walter Sandy Merchant, of Bristoll; and the Petition of Mary Hooke, the Widow of Tho. Hooke, of Bristoll, deceased; and the Petition of Richard Vickers, of Bristoll, Merchant; be referred to the Committee for the Navy.

Great Seal.

Mr. Prideaux, Mr. White, Mr. Blakeston, Mr. Browne, Serjecant Wilde, Mr. Wheeler, Mr. Goodwyn, Mr. Young, Mr. Whillocke, Sir Jo. Curson, Mr. Trenchard, Mr. Gurdon, Mr. Pury, Sir Rob. Harley, Mr. Nicholas, Mr. Corbett, Sir Martyn Lister, Mr. Hill;

This Committee is to consider what is fit to be done concerning the Great Seal, and the Use of it; and to consider of the former Votes of both Houses concerning it; and to report their Opinions to this House. And this Business is especially recommended to Mr. Serjeant Wilde, and all the Lawyers of the House: And all the Members of the House that will come, are to have Voices at this Committee: And are to meet this Afternoon, at Three a Clock, in the Exchequer Chamber.

Brooke's Estate.

An Ordinance for sequestring the Estate of Sir Wm. Brooke, who lately died in the Service of the Parliament, for the Use of his Lady and Children; in regard the said Estate, by his dying without Heir Male, descends to Sir Jo. Brooke, now in actual Arms against the Parliament; was read; and, upon the Question, assented unto; and ordered to be sent up to the Lords, for their Concurrence.

Haberdasher's Hall Committee.

Ordered, That Mr. Lisle be added to the Committee at Haberdashers Hall, instead of Sir Tho. Midleton, who is absent, in the Service of this House, in Shropshire.

Assessing absent Members.

Mr. Lisle, reports the Ordinance, formerly re-committed, for assessing the Members and Assistants of both Houses at the Twentieth Part, that absent themselves from the Service of the House; and to mortgage their Estates for Payment of the Sums assessed: Which was read, with the Amendments; and, upon the Question, assented unto; and was carried up to the Lords, by Mr. Strode.

City Forces.

Mr. Nicoll presents to the House, an Ordinance for enabling the Committee for the Militia of London to send out some of the City Forces presently for the taking in of Reading, which is now in fortifying : Which was read; and, upon the Question, assented unto; and sent up to the Lords, for their Concurrence.

Message to Lords.

Sir Chr. Yetverton went up to the Lords with this Ordinance concerning the Militia: With an additional Ordinance concerning the Excise on Wine: With the Ordinance concerning Sir Wm. Brook's Estate; and the Ordinance for the weekly Assessment for Northamptonshire.

Constable's &c. Claims.

Ordered, That it be recommended to the Committee for the Safety to satisfy Captain Constable, and the other two Captains, informed of this Day by Sir G. Gerard, the Monies that is due unto them upon their Accounts: in regard they are presently to advance, with some of the City Companies, for the regaining of Readinge.

Preasing Men for Garnesey.

Mr. Hill presents an Ordinance for the pressing of Five hundred Men for Garnesey: Which was read; and, upon the Question, assented unto; and ordered to be sent unto the Lords, for their Concurrence.

Associated Counties.

Ordered, That an Ordinance be brought in for passing the Third Part of the Sequestrations in the associated Counties, to my Lord of Manchester, for the Payment of the Forces under his Commannd, raised in those Counties; and for enabling my Lord of Manchester to levy the Sequestrations; and also, to have Power to levy the weekly Assessments: And that the Earl of Manchester be desired to take care to send up a Rental of the Sequestrations, and to pay the Two Middlesex Troops out of the Sequestration Monies in those Counties: And Mr. Corbett is to bring in the Ordinance.

Military Affairs.

Sir Philip Stapleton acquaints the House, my Lord General hath commanded him to inform the House, that this Day he cannot come unto the House, in regard he taketh Physick: - That he is sorry the Enemy doth so much straggle up and down the Country, and are to come to Maidenhead: He expected other Forces of the Parliament should have been there: - Sorry for the Dishonour and the Hindrance of our Winter Quarters: However, he hath taken care, though his Soldiers want Pay, to send a Strength sufficient to possess themselves of that Town.

Ordered, That Thanks be returned to my Lord General, for his Care herein.

Message, by Sir Edw. Leeche and Dr. Ailett;

French Ambassador.

That the Lords have commanded us to let you know, that the Committees have agreed to the Answer to the French Ambassador; and that their House have agreed unto it, with the Amendment of one Word; and desire the Concurrence of this House: And do desire a present Conference, if it may stand with the Conveniency of this House, in the Painted Chamber, concerning my Lord General.

The Answer to the French Ambassador was read; and, upon the Question, assented unto.

Answer returned by the same Messengers; That this House has agreed to the Answer to the French Ambassador; and will give a present Meeting, as is desired.

Mr. Pym, Sir Ph. Stapleton, are appointed Managers of that Conference.

Lords agree to Ordinances.

Sir Chr. Yelverton reports, the Lords do agree to the Four Ordinances he carried up.

Sir Hen. Barkley.

Sir Edward Hungerforde informs the House, That Sir Hen. Barkley voluntarily hath yielded himself again a Prisoner; hearing the House did dislike his Enlargement, and fearing any Prejudice might befal some Member of this House, by reason of his Enlargement; but is a Suitor to the House, in regard he is Sixty-six Years of Age, he might have some Liberty for his Health, upon Security.

Ordered, That Sir Hen. Barkley be committed Prisoner to Winchester House; there to remain during the Pleasure of this House.

Exchange of Prisoners.

Ordered, That Sir Ph. Stapleton do move my Lord General to think of the Exchange of Lieutenant Colonel Hungerforde, Prisoner at Oxforde.

Assessing absent Members.

Mr. Strode, reports, The Lords do agree to the Ordinance he carried up this Day, concerning the assessing of the Members that are absent.

Conference.

Mr. Pym reports the Conference with the Lords; to this Purpose:

Sir Wm. Waller's Commission.

Resolved, upon the Question, That this House doth accept of the voluntary Offer of Sir Wm. Waller to surrender his Commission: And doth accept of the Surrender accordingly.

Mr. Recorder, Sir Ph. Stapleton, Sir Hen. Mildmy, Colonel Fynes, are appointed to go to my Lord General, to acquaint him, that Sir Wm. Waller hath voluntarily surrendered his Commission: And to acquaint him with such other Things as may conduce most for the present Service of the Kingdom, as Affairs now stand.

Merchant Adventurers.

A Message from the Lords, by Sir Edw. Leeche and Dr. Ailett;

That the Lords have appointed their Committee appointed for the Merchant Adventurers Business, to meet this Afternoon, at Four a Clock, at Haberdashers Hall: And desire this House to appoint the Committee of this House to appoint * *

Answer returned by the same Messengers; that this House has appointed their Committee to meet at Haberdashers Hall, as is desired.

Debts to Ducy.

Ordered, That Sir George Clerk, and all others in whose Hands any Monies, Goods, or Debts are, which belong unto Sir Richard Ducy, shall be paid over unto Mr. Pury, one of the Committee of Glocester, for the Service of Glocester, upon Account: And this House will save them harmless, for Payment and Delivery of the same.

Sutton's Hospital.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee for Glocester, to examine what Monies have been conveyed of late to Oxford from Sutton's Hospital; and to give Order, that no Monies be issued out thence, except for the Maintenance of those residing in the Hospital: And that they do examine what Monies is there remaining; and to examine if any Scholars, or Soldiers, or Officers, belonging to the Hospital, that are in Arms against the Parliament, have any Pension thence; and to make stay of all such Monies as shall be there in the Receivers Hands, till this House take further Order: And have Power to send for Parties, Witnesses, &c.

Payment to Skrimshire.

Ordered, That Captain Skrimshire shall have Fifty Pounds paid him forthwith.

Sequestered Livings.

Ordered, That no Sequestration for any Living, be brought into the House, but such as shall be reported from the Committee for plundered Ministers; and hath the Approbation of the Assembly of Divines.

Dr. Mayherne.

Ordered, That Dr. Mayherne shall have Leave to bring to Town his Cabinet of Arms and Guns he hath in the Country, without the Let, Hindrance, or Interruption; of any; and have Liberty to keep them here, without Interruption.

Beddell's Petition.

Ordered, That the humble Petition of Captain Thomas Beddell be referred to the Committee for the Navy, to give Satisfaction to the Captain and Mariners.

Eastland Merchants.

Ordered, That the Petition of the Governor, Assistants, and Fellowship, of the Eastland Merchants, be referred to the Committee for the Navy.

Lancaster Ministers.

To the end that the Maintenance, provided or disposed by the Parliament for preaching Ministers within the County of Lancaster, may only be given unto godly, and learned, and orthodox Divines; this House doth order, That no Minister within the said County, shall hereafter have Benefit, by any Sequestration, Pension, or other Portion, settled, or to be settled, upon any Church or Chapel within the said County, until every such Minister do shew a Certificate, unto Two or more Deputy Lieutenants in the said County, to be approved by them, of his Abilities and Fitness for the Ministry; under the Hands of Mr. Herle of Winwick, Mr. Herrick of Manchester, Mr. Hyett of Croston, Mr. Harrocks of Deane, Mr. Ambrose of Preston, Mr. Shaw of Aldhingham, Mr. Auger of Denton, Mr. Johnson of Ashton Mercy Banke, Mr. Ward of Warrington, Mr. Shaw of Liverpoole, Mr. Gee of Eccleston, Mr. Latham of Dunglass, Mr. Harper of Boulton, Mr. Hollingworth of Salford, Mr. Waight of Gargreave, and Mr. Johnson of Rochdayle, or any Seven or more of them.

The Covenant.

Ordered, That Dr. Grant, Parson of the Parish of St. Bartholomew's Exchange, that, according to the Injunction of Parliament, he shall not fail, at the set time, himself to take, and also publish to his Parishioners who have not taken it, the late Vow and Covenant; and encourage them, by declaring the Utility and Necessity of this present Covenant, according to the commendable Practice of other godly Ministers; so that his Parishioners may chearfully and unanimously enter into it.

Hadley Parsonage.

An Order for sequestring the Rents and Profits of the Parsonage of Hadley in the County of Suffolk, whereof Robert Cottesford, Doctor in Divinity, is now Rector, to the Use of Isaac Harrison Master of Arts, a godly, learned, and orthodox Divine; who is hereby appointed and required to preach every Lord's Day there; and take care for the Discharge of the Cure of that Place, in all the Duties thereof; and to receive the Profits thereof, until further Order shall be taken by this House; was this Day read; and, by Vote upon the Question, assented unto.

Dagenham Vicarage.

An Order for sequestring the Rents and Profits of the Vicarage of Dagenham in the County of Essex, whereof Mr. Charles True was late Vicar, to the Use of Mr. John Bowyer a Master in Arts, an orthodox and godly Divine; who is hereby appointed and required to preach every Lord's Day there; and take care for the Discharge of the Cure of that Place, in all the Duties thereof; and to receive the Profits thereof, until further Order shall be taken by this House; was this Day read; and, by Vote upon the Question, assented unto.

Eltham Vicarage.

An Order for sequestring the Rents and Profits of the Vicarage of Eltham, in the County of Kent, whereof John Woodcock was late Vicar, to the Use of Mr. John Salmon Master of Arts, a godly and orthodox Divine; who is hereby appointed and required to preach every Lord's Day there; and take care for the Discharge of the Cure of that Place, in all the Duties thereof; and to receive the Profits thereof, until further Order shall be taken by this House; was this Day read; and, by Vote upon the Question, assented unto.

Egerton Curacy.

An Order for sequestring the Rents and Profits of the Curateship of the Parish Church of Egerton, whereof Mr. John Kidd is Curate, to the Use of Mr. John Barton, Master of Arts, a godly, learned, and orthodox Divine, who is hereby appointed and required to officiate the said Cure, and preach diligently there; and take care for Discharge of the Cure of that Place, in all the Duties thereof, until further Order shall be taken by this House; was this Day read; and, by Vote upon the Question, assented unto.

Wendover Vicarage.

An Order for sequestring the Rents and Profits of the Vicarage of the Parish Church of Wendover, in the County of Buck', whereof John Harmitage was late Vicar, to the Use of Mr. Samuel Welles Master of Arts, a godly, learned, and orthodox Divine: who is here appointed and required to preach every Lord's Day there; and take care for the Discharge of the Cure of that Place, in all the Duties thereof, until further Order shall be taken by this House; was this Day read; and, by Vote upon the Question, assented unto.

Black Novelty Parsonage.

An Order for sequestring the Rents and Profits of the Parsonage of Black Novelty, in the County of Essex, whereof Mr. Joseph Plume was late Rector, to the Use of Edward Sparhauke, a godly, learned, and orthodox Divine; who is hereby appointed and required to preach every Lord's Day there; and take care for Discharge of the Cure of that Place, in all the Duties thereof; and to receive the Profits thereof, until further Order shall be taken by this House; was this Day read; and, by Vote upon the Question, assented unto.

Lancaster Vicarage.

An Order for sequestring the Rents and Profits of the Vicarage of Lancaster, whereof Dr. Augustine Wilbore was late Vicar, to the Use of Mr. Nehemiah Barnett, a godly, learned, and orthodox Divine; who is hereby appointed and required to preach every Lord's Day there; and take care for Discharge of the Cure of that Place, in all the Duties thereof, until further Order shall be taken by this House; was this Day read; and, by Vote upon the Question, assented unto.

Eccleston Parsonage.

An Order for sequestring the Rents and Profits of the Parsonage of Eccleston, in the County of Lancaster, whereof Dr. Richard Parre, Bishop of the Isle of Man, was late Rector, to the Use of Mr. Edward Gee Master of Arts, a godly, learned, and orthodox Divine; who is hereby appointed and required to preach every Lord's Day there; and take care for the Discharge of the Cure of that Place, in all the Duties thereof; and receive the Profits thereof, until further Order shall be taken by this House; was this Day read; and, by Vote upon the Question, assented unto.

Deane Church Rectory.

An Order for sequestring the Rents and Profits of the Rectory of Deane Church, in the County of Lancaster, from Christopher Anderton, to the Use of Mr. John Tilsley, a godly, learned, and orthodox Divine; who is hereby appointed and required to be Vicar of the said Parish Church of Deane; and to preach there every Lord's Day; and take care for Discharge of the Discharge of the Cure of that Place, in all the Duties thereof; and shall have, for his Pains, Sixty Pounds per Annum; and to the several Chapels of Houghton and Horwige, in the said Parish, to either of them, Twenty Pounds per Annum: Which said Sum of One hundred Pounds shall be paid upon the First Day of February, and First of August, by equal Portions, out of the Sequestration of the said Rectory of Deane Church, by those Officers that are appointed for the receiving of the Profits of the said Sequestration: And the Acquittances, under the Hands of the several Ministers who are to receive the same, shall be their sufficient Discharge.

Arlington Vicarage.

An Order for sequestring the Parish Church of Arlington, in the County of Sussex, whereof John Wilson was late Vicar, to the Use of John Manninge Master of Arts, a godly, learned, and orthodox Divine; who is hereby appointed and required to preach every Lord's Day there; and to take care for the Discharge of the Cure of that Place, in all the Duties thereof; and to receive the Profits thereof, until further Order shall be taken by this House; was this Day read; and, by Vote upon the Question, assented unto.
