PRAYERS.

Tonage and Poundage.

THE Ordinance concerning the Settling the Monies payable upon Tonage and Poundage, according to former Order, was this Day read; and ordered to be recommitted, as to the Sixth Clause: And to take some Consideration of giving Directions for the Paying the One per Cent. And to consider of some Time for the Continuance of it.

And the rest of the Clauses being put to the Question;

Mr. Reynolds, Mr. Rolle, Mr. Solicitor, Mr. Cage, Mr. Prideaux, Mr. Green, * Ro. Pye, are to consider of the Ordinance concerning the Customs, as to those Points for which it was recommitted: And are, to this Purpose, to withdraw presently.

Mayors of Salisbury, &c.

Ordered, That the Business concerning the Mayor of Salisbury, who was complained of in this House, and ordered to be summoned to attend, be referred to the Committee for Informations: And the Complaints against the Mayors of St. Albanes and Herts are likewise referred to the Examination and Consideration of this Committee.

Members to be examined by Lords.

That this House does give Consent, that Mr. Baptist Noell, Sir Tho. Cheeke, Mr. Ger. Loe, Members of this . . . , may be examined in the Cause of the Lord Mayor, so that it may be no Delay to that Trial.

Letter from E. of Warwick.

A Message from the Lords * * * *.

The Lords do desire a Conference, by Committees of both Houses, presently, in the Painted Chamber, if it may stand with the Conveniency of this House, concerning a Letter received from the Earl of Warwick.-

Deputy Lieutenants.

Resolved, upon the Question, That this House doth approve and nominate Mr. Rich. Erisey, Mr. Jo. Trefusis, and Mr. Nicholas Trefusis, to be Deputy Lieutenants for the County of Cornewall.

This Vote was carried up to the Lords by Mr. Rowse, for their Concurrence.

Answer from Lords.

Mr. Waller brings Answer of the Message carried up by him on Tuesday last, (which was, to deliver the Answer of this House to his Majesty's Answer to the late Petition), that the Lords will send Answer by Messengers of their own.-

Conference.

Answer returned by the same Messengers; That this House has considered their Lordships Message; and will give a present Meeting, as is desired.

Mr. Pym, Sir Ph. Stapilton, Mr. Holles, are appointed Reporters of this Conference.

Deputy Lieutenants.

Mr. Rowse brings Answer, That the Lords do agree to the Three Deputy Lieutenants, carried up by him, for the County of Cornewall.

Dorsett Militia.

Mr. Strode presented an Order for Sir Walth. Erle, and others to put the Militia in Execution in the County of Dorsett: Which was read:

THE Lords and Commons in Parliament now assembled, being informed of divers warlike Preparations lately made, and many threatening Speeches given out, in the County of Dorset, and the Parts adjoining; intimating an Intention of Raising War to the Disturbance of the Peace of that County; and also taking into their Consideration the present Troubles and Distractions of the whole Kingdom; do Ordain, That Denzell Holles Esquire, Sir Thomas Trenchard, and Sir Walter Erle, Knights, and John Browne Esquire, or any Two of them, shall have Power and Authority to arm, train, and put in Readiness, all and every the Inhabitants of that County, fit for the Wars, as well of the Trained, as other Volunteers, both Horse and Foot; and them under the Command of such Captains and other Officers, as they the said Denzell Holles, Sir Thomas Trenchard, Sir Walter Erle, and John Browne, or any Two of them, shall nominate and appoint, to lead and conduct, as well against all foreign Forces that shall, in hostile Manner, invade the said County, as for the Resisting and Opposing all such other Forces as shall be there raised, to the Disturbance of the Peace of that County: And herein the Sheriff, and all other his Majesty's Officers, are required to be aiding and assisting unto them, with their best Endeavours.

Prisoners from Caermarthen.

Ordered, That the Four Prisoners brought up by the Under Sheriff of the County of Caermarthen, shall be forthwith sent to the Gatchouse: And that it be referred to Sir Ro. Pye, Mr. Pym, and Mr. Wheeler, to consider of the Charges that the Sheriff has been at, in the bringing of them up, and for keeping them Fourteen Weeks, by the Default of the Sheriff of Brecon, who refused to receive them at his County, as the Order for bringing them up from Sheriff to Sheriff did require.

Horse from Enfield.

Ordered, That the Parties that brought up the Horse from Enfield do attend the Lord General, to receive his Directions what shall be done therein.

Letter referred.

A Letter from the Earl of Warwick, of the 26th of July 1642, was this Day read; and referred to the Committee of the Navy, where Mr. Green has the Chair.

Declaration of Parliament.

Mr. Hollis presented, from the Committee for the Defence of the Kingdom, a Declaration expressing the Reasons and Grounds that force the Parliament to raise Arms: Which was read; and, by Vote upon the Question, assented unto; and ordered to be delivered unto the Lords To-morrow, at a Conference; and to be printed.

Capt. Slingsby. &c.

Trial of Ld. Mayor.

The Lords commanded us to let you know, that Capt. Slingsby and Capt. Wake, whom their Lordships have committed, have divers times petitioned for their Enlargement: They desire to know if this House have any thing to say against them. They likewise have commanded us to acquaint you, that they have put off the Trial of the Lord Mayor till To-morrow, Nine of Clock peremptorily.

That it be left to the Discretion of the Committee appointed to manage the Evidence at the Trial of the Lord Mayor, to reply, or not to reply, to the Lord Mayor's Counsel, as they shall see Occasion.

Answer to Lords.

Answer returned by the same Messengers: That this House has considered their Lordships Message: And, as to Capt. Slingsby, and Capt. Wake, the House leaves it to their Lordships to do with them as in their Judgment they shall think fit. And they do take Notice of their Lordships Resolution to proceed with the Trial of the Lord Mayor To-morrow Morning, at Nine of Clock peremptorily.

Customs.

Mr. Green reports the Clauses re-committed, in the Ordinance for the Settling of the Customs: The which were read; and, by Vote upon the Question, assented unto; and ordered to be delivered unto the Lords at a Conference.

Mr. Green, Mr. Solicitor, and Mr. Strode, are to manage this Conference: And Sir Wm. Lewes is to desire this Conference.

Informations concerning King's Guards, &c.

Ordered, That the Letter written to Sir Ph. Stapleton, and the Informations concerning some Houses and Goods plundered by the Soldiers of the King's Guard, be forthwith printed: And that the Servants of the Earl of Holland, Sir Jo. Holland, and Sir Ph. Stapleton, be examined upon Oath, what Words they heard some of the Cavaliers give forth, when the said Committee presented the late Petition to his Majesty: And that the said Depositions be printed.

Army Treasurer.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth nominate and approve of Sir Gilbert Gerard to be Treasurer . . this Army to be raised by the Parliament: And that the Lords Concurrence be desired herein.

Marleborough Magazine.

A Letter from one of Marleborough, concerning the Removal of the Magazine from Marleborough of the 25th of this Instant July, written to Mr. Philip Smyth, a Member of this House, was this Day read: And the House took Notice of the Carriage of the Townsmen there: And Mr. Smyth ordered to return Thanks to the Town.

Apprehending Commrs of Array.

Ordered, That the Lords be moved to send down Orders into the Counties of Somersett and Wiltes, for the Apprehending of the Marquis Herts, the Lord Seymour, and such other Commissioners as shall put the Commission of Array in Execution in those Counties.

Arms from Hull.

Ordered, That Capt. Jo. Bradley who is appointed to take up the Arms formerly sent from Hull, be required to take Care likewise for the taking up of these Arms now sent from Hull, aboard the Ship called the Elizabeth, of Hull, Jo. Mould Master of the same.

Tumults at Stepney.

Ordered, That the whole Business of the Tumults at Stepney, on Sunday last, and Wednesday last, be referred to the Examination of the Committee for the scandalous Ministers: And are to meet To-morrow at Seven of Clock in the Court of Wards.
