Proceedings relating to Mr. Johnson.
ORDERED, That Mr. Christy, Sir Walter Moyle, Sir Tho. Mompesson, Mr. Kendall, Mr. Dolben, Mr. Vincent, and all the Members that serve for the Universities, and City of London, be added to the Committee appointed to inquire how Mr. Johnson came to be degraded; and by what Authority the same was done.
A Withness sent for in custody.
Mr. Tipping acquaints the House, from the Committee appointed to inquire what Children are sent abroad to be educated in the Popish Religion; and who have been the Occasion of sending them abroad; That one Mrs. Katherine Overburye, Widow, had been summoned to attend the Committee; but that she had not attended at the Time appointed, to answer such Things as should be charged against her.
Ordered, That the said Katherine Overbury, Widow, be sent for in Custody of the Serjeant at Arms attending this House, for her Contempt aforesaid.
Price's Estate.
An ingrossed Bill to supply a defective Conveyance, made by Roger Price, of the Manor of Westbury in the County of Bucks, was read the Third Time.
And the Counsel and Parties on both Sides, both for and against the Bill, were called in; and were fully heard: And several Conveyances were read, and Witnesses examined, relating to the Matter in Question.
And then the Counsel and Parties withdrew.
Resolved, That the Bill do pass: And that the Title thereof be, An Act to impower Roger Price, Esquire, to make a Jointure to his Wife, of the Manor of Westbury, in the County of Bucks.
Ordered, That Mr. Serjeant Wogan do carry up the Bill to the Lords, for their Concurrence.
Leave of Absence.
Ordered, That Sir Wm. Pincent have Leave to go into the Country, for a Month.
Supply Bill.
Ordered, That the Committee to whom the Proviso to be added to the Bill for granting a Subsidy to their Majesties, be revived; and do sit this Afternoon: And that Sir Wm. Williams, Mr. Arnold, Sir Rob. Rich, Mr. St. John, Mr. Fuller, Mr. Harley, Sir John Dorrell, Sir Tho. Darcye, Mr. Machell, Lord Falkland, be added to the said Committee: And they are to make their Report to the House To-morrow Morning.
Judges examined why they were displaced.
Then the House was acquainted, That, according to the Order Yesterday, the Lord Chief Baron Alkins, Mr. Justice Dalben, Mr. Baron Neville, Mr. Justice Powell, and Mr. Justice Gregory, attended at the Door.
Resolved, That they be called in; and asked, For what Reasons they were formerly displaced from being Judges?
There was a Chair ordered to be set for them within the Bar.
And they were severally called in, and stood behind the same, the Serjeant with his Mace standing by on the Right-hand; and, being severally asked, Why they were formerly displaced from being Judges; they severally gave an Account thereof to the House.
Then the House was acquainted, That, according to their Order Yesterday, Sir Thomas Jones, Sir Fra.Pemberton, Mr. Serjeant Montague, Sir Creswell Levins, Sir Fran Withens, Sir Rich. Holloway, attended at the Door.
Resolved, That they be severally called in to the Bar; and asked, For what Reasons they were displaced from being Judges.
And they being accordingly severally called in; and asked, Why they were displaced from being Judges; they gave the House an Account thereof.
Then the House was acquainted, That Mr. Bridgman and Mr. Blathwaite, according to their Order, attended at the Door.
Resolved, That they be asked, Who were of the Privy Council, at or about Lady Day 1681; and who were then of the Cabinet Council; and whether any Note or Roll were kept of their Names; and also, what Books or Papers they have of Returns of Persons Names, who would take off the Penal Laws and Tests; and where the same are, or what are become of them; and also, what Letters were sent to the Lords Lieutenants, and what Returns they made?
Exceptions in Bill of Indemnity.
Resolved, That the further Consideration of the Heads of Exceptions in the Bill of Indemnity be adjourned till To-morrow Morning.
And then the House adjourned till To-morrow Morning, Nine of the Clock.
