sloop, William Peartree master, with six men

Jamaica, where her owners do dwell ; she being
arrived in London lately with her said crew and
being "not proper for the European trade, but
chiefly for fetching provisions and going from one

Treasury letters patent declaring that the various
sums amounting to 100,000l. lent by Sir Henry
Ashhurst, Sir J. Morden, Sir Sam. Dashwood,
Sir Hum. Edwin, Sir Ste. Evance, William Strong
and Jo. Foach, Excise Commissioners (to wit
25,000l. on the Temporary Excise, 25,000l. on
the Hereditary Excise and 50,000l. on the
1,651,702l. 18s. 0d. Aid), have been lent for the
supply of his Majesty's necessary and important
occasions ; and for that reason it was agreed by
the King that no direction should be given to the
said Commissioners for the re-lending of the said
100,000l. towards the further repayment of the
600,000l. to the States General of Holland as might
have been given under the terms of the covenant, ut
supra, pp. 273-4, 594-5, whereby said Commissioners
agreed to lend said sum for said repayment to
the Dutch and upon being repaid same out of the
Excise to re-lend it again and again for the same
purpose for any period not exceeding two years
from 1689, Michaelmas : which sum they did
accordingly so lend before 1689, Christmas, and
several other sums since, and were repaid same
and have not re-lent same to the King for said
purpose, but for other special services of the King.
The covenant therefore above referred to is hereby
to stand good as to continuing said Commissioners
in their places until repayment of their advance,
notwithstanding their nominal non-fulfilment of
the abovesaid clause thereof. |
