Prefixing : (a) Order of the King in Council, dated
Whitehall, Oct. 27 inst., approving a list of ships
as follows, transmitted from the Committee for
Trade and Plantations, pursuant to the Order of
the 15th inst., which have been entered [in] or
cleared out from London port for any part of
America other than Barbados, Leeward Islands,
Jamaica, Virginia and Maryland. Hereon the
King orders that the said ships be cleared and the
embargo taken off from them, to the end they
may be at liberty to sail upon the usual bonds
either with the Barbados or Virginia convoys. No
other ships than in the list are to be allowed to go
and the embargo is to be continued on all ships
whatsoever which pretend to go to the said Plantations
after the convoy is gone.

Treasury order to the Customs Commissioners to
observe (a) infra.
Prefixing : (a) Order of the King in Council, dated
Whitehall, Oct. 27 last. By Order in Council of
the 15th ult., supra, pp. 1347-8, 1,000 seamen were
allotted to London port for this year's trade to
Virginia and Maryland, and the Customs Commissioners
were to report the distribution thereof.
They have accordingly this day presented a list of 61
ships for the said trade, "besides one not named,"
carrying in all 1,004 men. His Majesty hereby
approves thereof, and the said Commissioners are
to clear all the ships therein mentioned in order
to their proceeding in their respective voyages
with the appointed convoys. Particular care is
to be taken that no other ships or English mariners
do go, other than those in said list and that the
embargo be continued on all ships whatsoever
which pretend to go to the said Plantations after
the convoy is gone. |

Lands to enquire into the quantities and values of
such lands belonging to their Majesties as were
directed to be purchased for the making of gardens
and other conveniences and also for a park adjoining
to the intended palace, which about 1682 and 1683
Charles II declared his pleasure for building at
Winchester in the place where the then demolished
castle formerly stood : "we being now informed
that the said palace lying unfinished all or the
greatest part of the said lands or tenements lie
at present waste and unoccupied, to the prejudice
of their Majesties' interest." You are to cause the
said lands to be set out on rental to such persons
as will take the same until their Majesties' pleasure
be known to the contrary or until the Treasury
Lords shall otherwise direct. Certify your proceedings
herein speedily. |

Royal warrant to the Clerk of the Signet for a privy
seal to grant to the town of Henley on Thames
100 tons of timber, not fit for the Navy, out of
Whittlewood Forest, for repair of their bridge :
it appearing that on the 9th Dec., 1688, by order
of the Earl of Dunbarton, the said bridge was pulled
down "purposely to hinder our passing towards
our city of London, and the town did with great
care and speed rebuild the same for our passage,"
but it is of no continuance, and the town is greatly
impoverished for their services to their Majesties
and by the quartering of the late [King's] Army,
so that they are no ways able to rebuild it firm
again : and Phillip Ryley, Surveyor General of
Woods, having reported thereon that the said
bridge is in a very bad condition. The offal of
said timber is to be sold to the best advantage for
the King's use. |

a grant to Simon, Bishop of Ely, of the part of the
sede vacante temporalities of the bishopric of Ely,
which incurred from 1690, Nov. 30, to 1691, July 17,
as follows : said privy seal being directed to the
Treasury Lords etc., and John Knight, gent., "who is
appointed to examine, state and audit the accompts
of the revenue" of said bishopric and other bishoprics
during the time the temporalities thereof remained
in the King's hands and to Thomas Newcombe,
who was appointed by the King to be Receiver of
the revenue of said bishopric for the said time,
The said see became vacant by the deprivation of
Francis Turner, D.D., and the temporalities were
in the hands of the Crown from 1689-90, Feb. 1,
until July 17 last, when they were restored to the
present Bishop.
The parts of said revenue which incurred between
the feast of St. Andrew, Nov. 30, 1690, and July 17
last were as follows, viz. 688l. 3s. 1½d. due at Christmas,
1690 ; 534l. 17s. 2½d. due at Lady day, 1691,
and 377l. 9s. 4½d. due at 1691, June 24, or
1,600l. 9s. 8½d. in all. The account which the
said Newcombe is to render in the Exchequer for
the said sede vacante temporalities is hereby to
terminate at the feast of St. Andrew the Apostle
[Nov. 30], 1690. |

Royal warrant to the Attorney or Solicitor General for a
great seal for a grant to Sir Stephen Fox of a messuage
and tenement rooms, lodgings and other conveniences
situate within the Palace of Whitehall, which
premises have been for the most part erected or
rebuilt by said Fox at his own expense and are
now in his possession, and also a little garden lying
contiguous thereto and near the King's Woodyard
there, and all that ground which is now used for
a public passage, not only to and from the said
messuage or tenement, but also between Scotland
Yard and the Woodyard Watergate ; and also the
rooms or place called the Old Bakehouse which is
situated and lying under part of the rooms now
in the possession of said Fox as aforesaid : all
which premises do abut north on Scotland Yard
Dock and contain 97 foot of assize, and eastward
on the river of Thames and do contain on that side
100 foot of assize, and westward partly on a passage
there and partly on the room or chamber used by
the Foot Guards and do contain on that side 124
foot of assize, and south on the Woodyard there
and on the passage thence to the Thames and do
contain on that side 94 foot of assize : also for a
grant of a stable and coach house not contained
within the boundaries aforesaid, but situate within
the part of Whitehall Palace called Scotland Yard
near the Guard House there and containing 38 foot
by 20 foot with an addition backward of a piece of
ground 8 foot by 13 foot against the wall of the
said Woodyard : all as reported on by Sir Christopher
Wren July 14 last.
The present grant is to be for 42 years at the
reserve rent of 6s. 8d. : with a proviso of re-assumption
to the Crown on payment of 2,000l. and of
any expenses of rebuilding : and also with an
exception, out of this grant, of so much ground
of the premises as will make or leave a convenient
public way or passage of 6 foot wide at the least
between the Bakehouse Watergate and Scotland
Yard : and also with the exception thereout of the
passage behind the said Guard House which leads
to the Granary Lodgings. |

"And whereas the said John Knight hath lent or
may lend unto us moneys upon the unappropriated
part of the Customs, subsidies and duties or some
of them," a covenant is to be inserted on the King's
part that Knight shall not be removed from his
said office (save for fraud or misfeazance) until he
or his assigns be repaid and satisfied such moneys
with the interest thereof. |

disallowed any claim for salary, he having been

his patent salary and fees, with an allowance of
20l. per an. for a clerk only. But they advise
allowance of 37l. 17s. 1½d., for which sum he is
subject to a demand from the merchants ; 20l. for
two journeys to London and attendance there ;
7l. 7s. 6d. for the repairs of the Custom House [at
Lyme] and 15l. by him expended to discharge
himself of the sum of 460l. taken from him by the
late Duke of Monmouth : making the abovesaid
