[as Auditor of the Plantations] has presented
to my Lords the enclosed account [missing see
supra, pp. 1081-5] stated by him of the duty of 14d.
per ton for ships coming from the Province of
Maryland in one year ended 1690, Aug. 22, and
of the 2s. per hogshead on tobacco exported thence
in the said ships, being payable by the laws of
Maryland ; whereby it appears that 1,730l. 19s. 0d.
is due from the masters of 26 ships mentioned in
the enclosed list of ships [supra, pp. 1084-5], which
came from Maryland before 1690, Aug. 22, without
entering or clearing with the Naval Officer there
and for which no duty bills have been remitted.
You are to call upon the masters of the said 26
ships and to receive from them the said sum of
1,730l. 19s. 0d., which, with the value of two bills
delivered to you or [your predecessor] Mr. [Thomas]
Fox by Mr. John Coode and Mr. Kenelme Cheseldyne,
Agents of Maryland, for 49l. 6s. 0d., drawn upon
Richard Marsh and John Rose and to be in like
manner received by you, is to remain in your hands
until, upon returning [to my Lords] an account of
your proceeding herein, you receive my Lords'
directions for the disposal of the same.
I send you likewise enclosed a list [missing] of
divers bills of exchange drawn upon several merchants
for the impost of the moiety of the 2s. per
hogshead and powder money arising in Maryland,
supra, p. 1323. For these bills you are to call upon
Mr. Pagen, merchant, and give him an acquittance
for same and thereupon receive the value from the
said merchants : and to return the like accounts
thereof as above with all speed. |

We have received yours of the 24th ult., containing
several queries relating to secret service moneys.
In answer thereto we must desire you to be referred
to our letter of the 21st ult., supra, pp. 1313-4, giving
you an account of the method whereby the secret
service money has usually been issued, whereof we
have no otherwise cognizance than that the Chancellor
of the Exchequer (who happened to be out
of town when we wrote our [said] last letter) by
the King's direction does use to examine the
acquittances and see that the same do answer the
sums contained in the schedules or lists which his
Majesty signs from time to time for allowing the
payments of this kind, but without our knowing
for what uses those sums have been so issued, which
we think it no part of our duty to inquire into ;
and must therefore refer you (in case you desire
any further satisfaction) to the proper persons
therein concerned. |

General of Crown Lands, for a particular of premises
as follows, with a view to a grant to Edward Lloyd,
esq., of a moiety of the reserved rent of 20l. per an.,
together with [a grant of] the whole arrears thereon.
Prefixing : note of the report, dated Sept. 21 last,
from Sir Geo. Treby, Attorney General, on Edward
Lloyd's petition, referred ut supra, p. 1288. I find
that Charles I, by great seal dated 1625, May 8,
granted to Sir Edward Villiers, kt., and his heirs
certain lands called Malescott, alias Maylescott, in
the Forest of Dean, co. Gloucester, under a reserved
rent of 20l. per an. to the King. By privy seal of
1676, July, Charles II released to Edward Villiers, esq.,
all arrears of the said rent grown due before 1676,
March. Inasmuch as it appears to me that the
said rent is not in charge with the Auditor or Receiver
[General of Crown Lands] for co. Gloucester, it is
manifest that same has been concealed from the
Crown for some considerable time and I conceive
their Majesties have a good title thereto and to all
arrears thereof accrued since 1676, and may grant
petitioner said arrears and a moiety of said rent
for his charge and trouble in discovering the said
concealment. |

to the Yards before the said year 1691 shall be
taken care of effectually in the next payment, "it
not being possible for their Lordships to provide

Royal warrant, under the Queen's sign manual, to
the Clerk of the Signet for a privy seal for a grant
to John, Archbishop of Canterbury, of the part
of the sede vacante arrears of the temporalities of
the Archbishopric of Canterbury as follows : said
privy seal being addressed to the Treasury Lords
and to John Knight, "who is appointed to examine,
state, audit or determine the accounts of the revenues
of the Archbishopric of Canterbury and of divers
bishoprics for such time or times as the temporalities
thereof did lately remain in our hands," and to
Ralph Snow, who was appointed Receiver of the
said revenues of the said archbishopric for the
said time. The said archbishopric became void
by the deprivation of William Sancroft and for
that cause the temporalities thereof were in the
King's hands from 1689-90, Feb. 1, to 1691, July 11,
at which time by a great seal the temporalities
were restored to John, now Archbishop of that see.
The Queen being disposed to give to said present
Archbishop the said temporalities between the
feast of St. Andrew the Apostle, 1690, being Nov. 30
last, and the said 11th of July last, does hereby
grant him the same ; the items thereof being as
follows : viz. : 358l. 16s. 10d. for Tenths appropriated
for the year ended at Christmas last ;
235l. 19s. 6½d. for divers rents yearly, half yearly
or quarterly, and grown due at the said Christmas
last, and also 10 quarters of oats grown due at
same time for the year then ended, valued at 6l.
or thereabouts ; the said Christmas profits being
in all 600l. 16s. 4½d. ; and 20 quarters of wheat,
valued at 21s. per quarter, making 21l., which
became due at Candlemas day last, and sundry
rents or payments amounting to 17l. 13s. 5d., then
also due : and 40 quarters of barley, valued at
10s. 6d. per quarter, which became due on Feb. 14
past, commonly called Valentine's day : and
certain rents which became due at Lady day last,
to wit 908l. 8s. 3¼d. of rents in money, four [40]
quarters of wheat at 21s. per quarter, 42l. [sic],
50 quarters of malt at 11s. per quarter, 27l. 10s. 0d.,
60 quarters of barley at 10s. per quarter, 30l.,
33 weathers at 20s. apiece, 33l., 20 weathers at
18s. apiece, 18l., making in all 1,058l. 18s. 3¼d. ;
and also 42 weathers valued at 20s. apiece, 42l.,
likewise due at Easter last : and 50 weathers at 20s.
apiece, 50l., due on the 1st of May last : the perquisites
of a Court held at Croydon on May 5 last, amounting
to 1l. 18s. 9½d. : the like of a Court held at Lambeth
May 8 last, amounting to 34l. 16s. 7d. ; 20l. of
rents in money which became due on May 10 last :
53l. 6s. 11½d. of the like and 70 quarters of wheat
at 22s. 6d., amounting to 78l. 15s. 0d., which became
due at Pentecost last : 229l. 6s. 2½d. of rents in
money which became due at the Nativity of St.
John Baptist last, and 40 weathers amounting to
40l. ; and 400l. profits arising by wood felled and
sold between the feast of St. Andrew the Apostle
last and July 11 last : all the aforesaid rents and
profits between the said feast of St. Andrew and
the said July 11 last amounting to 2,669l. 11s. 7¼d.,
out of which are to be paid by the said Archbishop
divers sums of money, amounting to 289l. 12s. 8¼d.,
become due within the same period for rents resolute
and other rents, stipends to vicars or curates,
fees or salaries of officers or servants belonging to
the [office for collecting of] said revenue and other
constant or usual charges issuing out of said revenue.
If any of the above said profits chance to be
paid into the Exchequer, the same shall hereby
be issued to the Archbishop without accompt :
and if any lands, goods or chattels be extended
for any of the said rents or profits the same are
hereby to be delivered over and assigned to the
said Archbishop. Finally, the account which
Ralph Snow is to render of the sede vacante revenues
of said Archbishop is hereby to end at the feast of
St. Andrew, 1690. |
