Same to same to give credit as follows upon the imports
of commodities of the wood farm. In your report of
the 22nd inst. you, the Customs Commissioners,
have represented that great part of the timber and
deals from Norway are imported by the Danes in
their own shipping which pay alien duty, viz. a
fourth part more than if imported by English
[importers in English bottoms]; and the masters of
such ships who are strangers here are many times
without credit, not being able to raise money for
their duties except by sale of their goods [lading];
wherefore it was the usual practice of the managers
of the late wood farm to give them credit in such
cases for a short time till they could so sell part of
their lading to raise the duties due on the whole
lading. This arrangement was an advantage to
the wood farmers and it will be to the King's service
to pursue the same method [now that said duty is
managed by said Commissioners]. |
