Report to the King from the Treasury Lords on the petition of several loyal indigent officers, who pray that the sum of 3,000l. 7s. 4d. paid to his Majesty's use out of the moneys intended for them by the Act of Parliament may be repaid to them out of the arrear due to the King from William Broxholme, Receiver General of the late Eleven Months' tax, co. Lincoln. We find that Sir William Jones, Attorney General, in a report made March 13 last to the late Treasurer Danby, is of opinion that no part of the Eighteen Months' assessment [of 13 Car. II.] arising out of the [six] counties charged with the 60,000l. for the loyal indigent officers ought to have been paid to any but their Treasurer [J. Birch] until said 60,000l. was complete, and that thereafter the remains of said assessment in said counties should go to the King. It appears by certificate of the Auditor of the Receipt dated May 27 last and by a certificate of Tho. Townsend, an officer of the Great Wardrobe, dated June 5 last, that 2,600l. of the said assessment received by Charles Grills, who was sheriff of Cornwall and Receiver General [of said assessment in said county], was by him paid into the Exchequer between 1661–2, March 14, and 1662, June 3, and that 400l. 7s. 4d. of the same assessment in the Isle of Anglesea was paid by Ralph Buckley, sheriff thereof, into the Great Wardrobe between 1662, May 30, and June 23; both which sums, making 3,000l. 7s. 6d., ought, in Sir William Jones's opinion, to have been paid to the Treasurer of the said loyal and indigent officers. The abovesaid arrear due to the King from Broxholme amounts to 8,729l. 18s. 11¾d., besides 1,862l. 14s. 6d. set in super upon subcollectors. It appears by certificate from the Auditor of the Receipt that there remains unpaid on all the orders registered on the Eleven Months' tax only 40l. to Ann Porter and 29l. 10s. 2d. to Nich[olas] Hamond; so that Broxholme's arrear is available for the payment of the said 3,000l. 7s. 6d. to the said indigent officers, who allege that the whole sum of 60,000l. has not yet been completed to their Treasurer, as was required by the Act [of 14 Car. II, c. 8]. It may therefore be ordered by privy seal that as said Broxholme's arrears shall come into the Exchequer, said 3,000l. 7s. 6d. shall be paid to said indigent officers. |

(1) The Attorney General is to be advised with for the manner of prosecuting the seizures of French wine in Jersey for his opinion whether they are to be brought to the King's warehouse at the next port in England and prosecuted according to law or how otherwise. (2) We approve your order for one of the three waiters at Topsham to supply the place of land-waiters in Weymouth port, lately void by the death of Francis Bennet: two waiters being sufficient at Topsham during the prohibition of French trade. (3) We will acquaint the Committee for Trade and Plantations that you think it difficult and expensive, if not wholly impracticable, to extract all goods imported and exported under the several species as they desired of you. (4) We have resolved to suspend the salary of Mr. Danvers, one of the patent waiters London port, for not attending his duty by himself or deputy since January last. |
