Middlesex, who for some time before her death passed for a widow without relations save four children who lived with her under the denomination of nephews, being all minors, viz. William Stamper, 18 years old; Robert, 16 years old; Charles, 15 years, and Thomas, 13 years old: but it has been since found that they were her own children and born of her own body: she left no will but only desired, before her death, that petitioner should see her buried and take care of her estate that the said children might inherit; that petitioner has taken the children under his care and has made her burial and according to law has taken letters of administration to call in what she left and has exhibited a list thereof in the Prerogative Court, amounting to 1,000l.: that he is informed the estate belongs to the Crown as she died without any relations of title: therefore praying a privy seal that the children may have wherewithal to subsist. Warrant by the Treasury Lords to the Attorney General to enter a noli pros. to the information in the following case.
Prefixing: report to the Treasury Lords by the Customs Commissioners dated Feb. 13 on the petition of Thomas Hackman of Ringwood, Co. Southampton. The petitioner sets forth that in March last he ordered James Burt, mariner, to buy in Newfoundland a quantity of skins and furs for him, which he did and shipped them on the Joseph and Eliz[abeth], Robert Rider master, bound for Poole, but omitted to give notice to the master of a little bag containing 291 marten skins which was seized at Poole, being landed without petitioner's knowledge or direction. The Customs Officers accept his story, “Hackman having plainly proved on the hearing that such sort of skins are not used in our home trade but are exported by a certificate and sold at a foreign market.” The Customs Solicitor has certified that the goods are appraised but not condemned and that the officer may consent to the entry and the petitioner may take out a Writ of Delivery. William Lowndes to Mr. Cracherode enclosing the report [missing] from the Surveyor General of Woods that a trial comes on next Assizes at Winchester between one Mr. Battin and some of his Majesty's officers in New Forest, wherein the King's right will want to be defended against encroachments and the wrongful felling of timber in the said forest by the said Mr. Battin.
