Letter of direction for 1,800l. to Harry Mordaunt on his unsatisfied order as Treasurer and Paymaster of the Ordnance: to be issued out of the money to be paid into the Exchequer by Charles Eversfeild, late Treasurer and Paymaster of the Ordnance, towards the debt owing upon his account as late Treasurer thereof. William Lowndes to Mr. Cracherode enclosing Mr. Secretary Methuen's letter [missing] which laid before my Lords the informations of John Gordon and Andrew Hog representing the notorious practices which the persons concerned in transporting rebels to America are guilty of by permitting several of them for money to make their escapes. William Lowndes to the Attorney and Solicitor General to report on the enclosed letter [missing] from the Commissioners for Forfeitures against paying the Exchequer fees for moneys imprested to carry on the service of their Commission, as being in their opinion contrary to the Act [1 Geo. I., St. 2, c. 50] which appointed them to be Commissioners. Ibid., p. 100.
Same to Mr. Brudnell [Master of the Jewel House]. The King's pleasure was signified to the Treasury Lords some time since for the return of the plate delivered out of the Jewel House to Lord Bingley upon his being appointed in the late Queen's time as Ambassador in Spain, as the said Lord did not proceed on the said embassy. Lord Guernsey thereupon as late Master of the Jewel Office demanded said plate from Lord Bingley, but said Lord has not hitherto complied. I am to desire you to repeat the instances made to said Lord. Ibid.
Royal warrant dated Hampton Court under the sign manual of the Prince of Wales as Guardian of the Kingdom, to the Barons of the Exchequer, Scotland, to give warrant to the Receiver General of Land Rents and Casualties there to pay 125l. to Sir David Dalrymple out of any land revenue moneys due before the Union, being for so much owing to him at the time of the Union for six months on his salary as one of her late Majesty's Solicitors for Scotland, to wit from Martinmas 1706 to Whitsunday 1707. Treasury warrant to Richard Burton and John Fowler, “who were specially appointed to take care of the affairs belonging to Sick and Hurt Seamen,” to take up the vouchers referred to in the following petition and thereupon to make out new bills for the sums which by such vouchers shall appear to be due to the petitioners Lester and Wilson, so as the bills for satisfying the petitioner Lester's demands do not exceed 202l. 5s. 10d. and those to satisfy petitioner Wilson's demands do not exceed 159l. 9s. 9d.: and [thereupon] to assign the said bills for payment out of any moneys remaining in the hands of the Treasurer of the Navy that may be applied thereto: all by reason that my Lords find upon enquiry that the sums mentioned do still remain due and that the executors of Thomas Savery disown having in their hands wherewithal to satisfy the same.
Prefixing: report by P. Herbert and R. Adams on the petition of Joseph Lester and James Wilson as referred to them March 24 last [sic for 1714–15, March 24, see supra, Calendar of Treasury Books, Vol. XXIX, p. 433]. Petitioners set forth that in Feb. 1710–11 they were employed by the Commissioners for Sick and Wounded Seamen to entertain and quarter such persons as the said Commissioners should send till they could be admitted into St. Thomas's Hospital for cure under the limitations mentioned in the Instructions which they were obliged to observe on penalty of 100l. and were promised their accounts should be discharged every six months at farthest: that for this service there is 202l. 15s. 0d. due to said Lester and 159l. 9s. 9d. to said Wilson, which [sum] was some time since ordered to be paid by Capt. Savery, late Treasurer to the said Commissioners, who excused himself therefrom, alleging he had not money in his hands: therefore the petitioners pray that their mean circumstances may be considered and they relieved in the premises.
Hereon the referees report that the allegations are true. For payment of said sums we directed our warrants upon Mr. Savery, our late Treasurer, to pay them out of such surplus of South Sea Stock as remained in his hands, but for what reason he has not complied with our warrants we cannot tell; nor can we do anything further therein, he not being now Treasurer and so not under our directions. I., St. 2, c. 50, for appointing Commissioners to enquire of the estates of certain Traitors &c., which Act appointed that certain fines which the said Commissioners have power to impose shall be paid into the Exchequer for the use of the public; and that certain debtors of forfeiting persons making such discoveries as are therein mentioned and paying two thirds parts into the Exchequer shall be discharged of the entire debt by virtue of said Act; and the said Commissioners are authorised to make compositions or agreements touching the debts and goods and chattels of the forfeiting persons; and persons possessed of forfeited lands &c. not giving notice thereof are to forfeit two years' rents or profits thereof and are to account for the profits from 24 June 1715 and other provisions are laid down therein relative to estates and goods given to superstitious uses: and it is necessary to appoint some persons entrusted on behalf of the public to take particular care that all the moneys intended to be brought into the Exchequer be accordingly so brought and paid in.
