It is the Lord Treasurer's direction that "all or any of the weekly payments ordered out of the Civil List money may be postponed (except the 2,000l. a week to the Household) till the particular directions at any time ordered be satisfied." Treasury reference to the Attorney General of the petition of Anthony Grindall, Warden of the Fleet prison, shewing that he has in custody one George Lawson, committed at the Queen's suit for 2,100l. for salt Duty frauds; that the Court of Common Pleas permitted him to be carried to Northumberland as a witness in a trial there, but at Newcastle the keeper in charge of said Lawson was arrested for debt and "Lawson went to Glosterhill in Northumberland, which as soon as petitioner heard he took care to have him secured and has him close prisoner at this time; notwithstanding which there is an information filed against him for recovery of the said sum as though the said Lawson was not so secured." Thomas Harley to the Auditor of the Receipt. The Act of Parliament for the Two Million Adventure directed that particular officers should be appointed for paying the principal and interest on the standing orders and also to enter and register assignments thereof and to comptroll the payments and that the business of these offices should be performed in or near the Receipt of the Exchequer. The Lord Treasurer desires you to report what rooms there are in or near the Exchequer which may be most convenient therefor, to the end my Lord may direct the fitting them up with all expedition, the service requiring the same. The Lord Treasurer has considered your report of Jan. 17 last on the petition of Benjamin Joules, ballastmaster at Plymouth, as also the Act of 8 Anne, c. 4, granting him the privilege of ballasting and unballasting her Majesty's ships within Plymouth Sound and other the precincts for 71 years from 1710 March 25 at the rate of 9d. per ton. My Lord is of opinion that for all ships of her Majesty that have been or shall be ballasted or unballasted by said Joules after 1711 Sept. 29 the rate allowed by the said Act should be paid in [Navy] bills to be numbered on the new Course [of the Navy], and he directs you to cause bills for the said rate to be from time to time [made forth and] numbered on the new Course accordingly.
