Oct. 22. William Lowndes to the Victualling Commissioners. The Lord Treasurer is informed that on June 1 last 25,967l. 12s. 1d. remained due to the pursers of her Majesty's ships for necessary money. You are to inform him how much thereof is since paid and how the remainder ought to be satisfied. Out Letters (General) XX, p. 34.
Same to the Customs Commissioners enclosing the memorial [missing] from the Muscovite Ambassador. What has been done for any other Ambassadors on the like occasion ? Ibid.
Same to same enclosing translations [missing] of a memorial and letter touching the two Dutch Sea Officers who were put in prison on account of some transactions relating to the Customs. Inform my Lord Treasurer what proceedings have been made against those Officers since your former report. Ibid.
Oct. 23. Treasury reference to the Principal Officers of the Works of the petition of Widow Redding praying payment of 147l. 16s. 8d. due to her for work done in Cotton House garden "as appears by the bill signed by John Simpson, my Lord Halifax's gardener"; that the other bills for work done there were entered some time since in the books of the Officers of the Works, but petitioner's bill not being brought when the rest were passed they refuse to notice it because not then brought in, "which she says was because my Lord Halifax's gardener said my Lord would pay her; which his Lordship refuses." Oct. 24. William Lowndes to the Attorney General to report on the enclosed letters [missing] relating to some flax brought from the Baltic to Edinburgh and forcibly landed there without warrant. Out Letters (General) XX, p. 35.
Same to the Transports Commissioners to allow interest to Dec. 25 next on bills registered on the Course of the Transport Office now ordered to be paid in South Sea Stock, ut supra, p. 531. Ibid.
T. Harley to the Surveyor General of Crown Lands. By order in Council of Sept. 3 last the Queen referred to my Lord Treasurer a petition of Capt. Davison and Mr. Brown proposing to build a light house on a small island or rock called the Skerries, of which island they pray a grant with a grant of reasonable tonnage on ships passing [by the said light]. You are to report hereon to my Lord. Ibid., p. 36.
Treasury reference to the Taxes Commissioners of the petition of Joseph Sturt, one of the sureties of John Weston, late Receiver for Co. Surrey, shewing that though a surety for the said Weston he neither directly nor indirectly received any of the Queen's money nor had ever any other advantage by it; that he is only tenant for life of a small paternal estate and can raise no money on it and is in no way of business and should be ruined if my Lord Treasurer should give power for seizing his life estate. Same to same of the petition of William Andrews of London, merchant, surety for William Kent, late Receiver for Co. Lancs., who died insolvent, being 1,333l. 13s. 0d. in debt to the Crown on the Quarterly Poll for 1698; of which debt petitioner has paid over 300l. and several cravings amounting to 1,005l. have been reported in his favour by the Agents for Taxes: therefore praying allowance thereof and stay of process. Oct. 25. Money order for 52l. 1s. 8d. to Charles Whitacre, late Chief Justice of Pembroke, Carmarthen and Cardigan, for 25 days 1711 May 14 to June 9 (the date of the patent appointing Serjeant Banastre as his successor therein) on the 300l. per an. salary. Order Book VIII, p. 117.
T. Harley to the Attorney General to stay proceedings against Mr. Rudge for five or six days as by his enclosed letter [missing] to the Lord Treasurer. Out Letters (General) XX, p. 35.
William Lowndes to the Customs Commissioners to report on the enclosed letter from Monsieur Bonet, Minister from the King of Prussia [André Louis Frederic Bonet de St. Germain, Resident from Brandenburg], relating to some things belonging to Monsieur [Wilhelm] Willers who is the said King's Minister at Venice, which things are detained at the Custom House. Oct. 25. Treasury reference to the Taxes Commissioners of the petition of William Palmer et al., sureties for John Andrews, late Receiver of Land Tax for Co. Warwick, praying stay of process till Hilary term, by which time they hope to obtain an Act [a private Act] of Parliament to the satisfaction of the purchasers of Andrews' estate and by sale thereof to clear the arrears due to the Crown.
