Warrant by Treasurer Oxford to the Surveyor General of Crown Lands for a particular of the Hundred of Wico Malbano which is called Namptwich or the office of Bailiff of the Liberty of said Hundred in order to a fresh lease thereof to Hugh, Earl of Cholmondeley: at a fine of 110l. |
|
Prefixing: said Surveyor General's report on said Earl's petition for same. The premises were valued by the pretended Parliament Survey at 11l. per an. above the 9l. per an. rent; which Mr. Harbord Surveyor General, in 1680 thought a high rate, "and though the
jurisdiction of the Court Baron was before confined to actions not exceeding 40s. and by that grant was enlarged to try all personal actions under 20l., yet that term of 31 years was rated to pass" on only a fine of 40l. I have generally observed the practice in these inferior Courts hath very much decayed of late years, and can see no other manner of improvement the premises are capable of. What is desired is only honorary, lying within his estate and many years possessed by him and his ancestors. He hopes to be admitted to renew without fine. According to the Parliament Survey I rate a new lease for 31 years at a fine of 110l. Warrants not Relating to Money XXI, pp. 215–16. |

Warrant by Treasurer Oxford to the Surveyor General of Crown Lands for a particular of premises as follows, part of Pall Mall Field in the Bailiwick of St. James's; in order to a lease thereof to Mary Packer. |
|
Prefixing: report by said Surveyor General dated 1710 Sept. 28 on the petition of said Mrs. Packer. The house and ruins in petitioner's possession formed two tenements which were some years since burnt and remains now in ruins on the east side of St. James's Street; the house which is standing is low built, one pair of stairs, four rooms of a floor and closets, kitchen &c. backwards and a small garden. It is old and ill contrived and must be rebuilt. Regard should be had to the great misfortune of the fire which consumed the best of the buildings on the premises and that there never were any cellars to any of the tenements, which will be chargeable in sinking. The premises form part of a lease from the Crown to trustees for the late Earl of St. Albans. Ibid., pp. 353–4. |
