Treasurer Godolphin to Mr. Chetwynd, Envoy at Turin. I own the receipt of your letters of the 7th and 28th June last representing the difficulties which Mr. Stanyan seems to meet with in getting bills of exchange or proper species [of money] to answer the bills which you and your brother had [drawn] upon him for the value of 600,000 Crowns and the great straits you are under by reason thereof; and desiring my orders in relation thereto and for a further supply. As to the bills upon Mr. Stanyan I wrote to him on the first intimation [as above] to give all possible despatch to that affair: and by my letter to yourself of the 2nd of June last I have said all I can on this subject. William Lowndes to the Auditors of Imprests to report on the enclosed letter [missing] from Monsieur Vryberge concerning Monsieur de Wildt's account of 20,600l. received [by him] for Transport service in the late war: with a paper in Dutch and the translation thereof containing the course of exchange [at the various dates of the various encashments making up said total] when the said money was received; as also that part of his letter wherein he demands 3 per cent. commission for the said De Wildt. Is it reasonable that he should be allowed commission for the said sum, and if so at what rate ? Ibid., p. 205.

Treasury reference to Lord Halifax of the petition of Thomas Soultier shewing that Rowland Reynolds purchased two banker's assignments and mortgaged same to petitioner with a proviso of redemption on repayment of 200l., but Reynolds has since failed and has endeavoured to cheat petitioner by getting copies of the assignments on pretence that same [the original orders] were lost and thereby got orders in his own name and a second time mortgaged the same: therefore petitioner prays to have orders in his own name and that at present all payments may be stopped. William Lowndes [to the Navy Commissioners] to satisfy the sum of 21,975l. 3s. 8d. to Walter Whitfeild as follows out of the tallies and orders on the Continued Impositions anno 1710 which are remaining in the hands of the Treasurer of the Navy for uses to be appointed: and is to clear the Marine Regiments &c. as in said Whitfeild's memorial: viz.

Same to the Treasurer of the Navy. The Bank of England has agreed (for supplying the pressing occasions of the Navy) to give Exchequer Bills [in exchange] for 15,000l. in tallies and orders on the twelfth 4s. Aid (the Land Tax) anno 1709, being further part of 240,497l. 14s. 2½d. of the like Exchequer Bills which were issued for the service of the Navy on the 1st April 1709 [and further the Bank has agreed to give like Exchequer Bills in exchange for] 50,000l. in tallies and orders on the thirteenth 4s. Aid (or Land Tax) anno 1710 [which tallies were issued] as further part of 150,000l. which were issued for the service of the Navy on the 16 Dec. last [up to this point the text of the preamble of this letter is extremely confused, suggesting clerical errors in the transcription, see infra, p. 384], and it has further agreed to advance 27,000l. in like Exchequer Bills on the [security of the] deposit of tallies and orders on the Candle Duty and to be repaid in specie in four months from the date of advancing same, with 4 per cent. interest thereon. The Lord Treasurer desires that you apply as follows the said sums, making 92,000l. in all: viz.

for wages to seamen generally and to be taken in further part of the proportion to that head out of the funds for the year 1709 15,000

Report to the Lord Treasurer by William Blathwayt as Auditor General of the Plantations on the petition of Tho. Day praying a grant of a waste piece of ground in Bermudas on which his late brother Samuel Day at the time of his being Governor built a house. A similar petition was referred to me in March 1707–8 and I thereon reported that the Governor of Bermudas might be required to lay before your Lordship a state of the whole matter; which he has done, as appears by a copy of his letter, "hereto annexed" [missing] wherein he reports that he has nothing to object why her Majesty may not gratify the petitioner, the brother having laid out a considerable sum of money in building the said house. Treasury reference to the Barons of the Exchequer in Scotland, of the petition of the Earl of Cromarty shewing that his ancestors have enjoyed a fishing of a little river called Conna at 30l. per an. rent to the Crown and he has been at great expense in building and supporting a lock or crooe across that river from bank to bank, a method used in fishing in the said river since the first grant thereof; and that the channel thereof having been lately diverted he has been at great expense to force it back: therefore praying to be discharged of the said rent until the crooes be new built and repaired in the manner they were at first. Treasury reference to the Surveyor General of Crown Lands of the petition of Thomas Boughton for a fresh lease of certain corn mills as demised to [? his father] Thomas Boughton by the [then] Queen Mother 28 June 1662 but a lease thereof was subsequently obtained in a clandestine manner by one Brown and on the 22 April 1698 the Queen Dowager demised the premises to Richard Marriot: and further the said late Queen [Dowager] on the 17th Feb. 1685–6 demised to Edmund Le Neve et al. the manor of King's Cliffe in trust for petitioner's father (of which also the said Marriott has obtained a lease in a clandestine manner): petitioner or others in trust for him and his father having been for many years tenants to the premises: therefore petitioner prays a new lease thereof.
