Royal warrant dated St. James's to the Attorney or Solicitor General for a great seal for a grant to James Craggs, Samuell Edwards and Charles Hodges (in trust and for the natural lives of Sarah Duchess of Marlborough, her daughter Mary, Duchess of Montague and Henrietta, Viscountess Ryalton another of her daughters) of the Rangership or office of Ranger or Keeper of Windsor Great Park and of all those houses or lodges called the Manor Lodge, Hill Lodge, Middle Lodge and Lower Lodge, and such herbage and pannage within the park as is mentioned in the patent of 1702 Sept. 30 as below, and the custody of the Paddock Walk within the said park and the house or lodge called Lister Lodge thereto belonging, and the herbage and pannage of the said Walk: all which premises together with the office of Ranger or Keeper of the Little Park at Windsor were granted by patent of 1702 Sept. 30 to Anthony Guydot (since deceased) and John Coggs as in trust and for the lives of the now Duke and Duchess of Marlborough and of John Churchill their then son now deceased: which said patent of 1702 Sept. 30 is hereby to be first surrendered. The Duke of Marlborough has sent to the Lord Treasurer Sir Solomon de Medina's account of his extraordinary charge and loss from the unusual length of the last campaign. Please inform the Duke that my Lord Treasurer has ordered 10,000l. to be paid to Medina by Mr. Brydges upon account of said demands but that if the whole of said account (which consists of many articles and amounts to a very considerable sum) is to be made good by her Majesty it is absolutely necessary that it should pass some particular examination: for which purpose it is returned herewith “for I must observe to you that the Parliament in the last Session gave but 50,000l. to defray her Majesty's proportion of all extraordinaries of this or such like nature, and by the account itself wherein that [50,000l.] sum was demanded of the House of Commons it is expressly mentioned that her Majesty's proportion is to be one moiety of the charge” [the other moiety being to be borne by the Dutch.] Out Letters (General) XIX, p. 78. |

By an Act [6 Anne, c. 45] which passed last Session for recruiting the Army it is enacted that the clerks of the Commissioners therefor shall receive such reward from the Paymasters of the Forces as the Lord Treasurer shall think fit in proportion to the number of men listed. I enclose the petition of John Chappell, town clerk of Norwich, praying the said reward.
