Treasury reference to the Comptrollers of Army Accounts of the petition of the clothiers of the Army shewing that 8 months' offreckonings are ordered to them in part of their arrears but the said Comptrollers object to the Colonels' assignments to petitioners because the clothing was not received by them. Warrant by Treasurer Godolphin to the Commissioners for the Victualling to pay 760l. to Richard Maundrell for butter and cheese provided by him for the service of the Navy viz. for the loss he sustained by two vessels which were laden therewith and cast away in the Downs in the violent storm in Nov. 1703.
Appending : (1) report by said Commissioners dated 29 August on said Maundrell's petition : (2) Report dated Admiralty Office 22 May 1705 by Prince George of Denmark as Lord High Admiral on the reference of 1704 July 14 to him from the Queen in Council, of said petition. "The Victualling Board believing it would be a very great saving to her Majesty if the Contractor for butter and cheese could be brought to transport the same to Portsmouth and Plymouth at his own risque and charge of freight" the petitioner so contracted 6 Sept. 1703 at a very reasonable rate and made a large and timely provision thereof at those ports and in the winter season he laded on several vessels considerable quantities of butter and cheese for supplying the Squadron then expected from Holland with the King of Spain, two of which vessels viz. the Hannah and Rebecca and Happy Entrance waiting in the Downs for convoy were cast away and wholly lost in the great storm as above, having butter and cheese on board to the value of 845l. for her Majesty's service. Warrant by Treasurer Godolphin to the Prizes Commissioners to depute John Russell as Agent for Prizes at Falmouth, at a quantum meruit for his services, as in place of John Parker and Nicholas Davy who are unfit to be continued therein.

Treasury reference to the Prizes Commissioners of the petition of Henry Johnson, late of London goldsmith, shewing that by his order Capt. James Clerk bought from the Prizes Commissioners several lots of white wines out of the ship Prophet Daniel but the circumstances of petitioner and of said Clerk are so low that they cannot clear the wines : therefore praying that same may be resold by the said Commissioners and that petitioners may be forgiven the damage that may happen by such re-sale. Same to the Excise Commissioners of the petition of Mary, widow of William Chaffin deceased, shewing that her late husband, an Excise gauger, was murdered on the highway as he was riding on her Majesty's business and afterwards was charged to have in his hands 10l. 11s. 3d. of the Queen's money by persons who did it to save themselves from the penalty of not making due entries, whereas her husband always discharged himself to his superior officers' content : therefore praying that the debt may be remitted, she having 3 small children. The Lord Treasurer understands from your letter of the 9th inst. that 5000l. in tallies and orders on Malt anno 1705, which was issued to you Sept. 13 last to await directions relating to the 40,000 men, has since been applied in part of subsistence to the said 40,000 men from Oct. 23 last to Dec. 23 next by assigning them to Sir Henry Furnese for the value of bills delivered to you for that purpose Oct. 3 last.
