Footnotes

  • 1. In the grants of Supply in William's reign the word 'Impositions' has reference mostly to a Customs grant, i.e. of a Duty on imports. In this particular instance however the phrase has reference inter al. to the grant of an additional Duty of Excise upon Beer, Ale and other liquors by the Act of 1 Wm. and Mary c. 24. By a subsequent Act of the same session 1 Wm. and Mary c. 28 certain Duties were appropriated for the payment of 60,000l. to Charles II's servants and 600,000l. to the States General for the cost of the Expeditionary Force which accompanied Wm III into England in 1688. This particular appropriation affected the additional Excise granted by 1 Wm. and Mary c. 24 and the residue of the Act of 1 James II c. 3 (Wines and Vinegar) 1 James II c. 4 (tobacco) and 1 James II c. 5 (for Duties on French linens). In order that the Dutch might be duly satisfied as to the carrying out of this appropriation Act of 1 Wm. and Mary c. 28 the Act itself ordered that separate Books should be kept in the Exchequer for the Excise so granted by 1 Wm. and Mary c. 24. It is these Books which are here referred to as "a Registrar in the Exchequer."
