May 3 Warrant from Treasurer Southampton to the Exchequer to forbear receiving the two last subsidies of those counties assigned to the city as security for the repayment of the loan of 50,000l. Early Entry Book V pp. 98–9.
May 4 Letter of direction concerning the 2,000l. warranted to Lady Ann Paulet, daughter to the Marquess of Winchester, as royal bounty. Ibid, p. 100.
Treasurer Southampton to the Auditor of the Receipt, to see that there be no diversion of the funds assigned for the 20,000l. ordered by the King to be paid to Mr. Stringer and Mr. Fisher to be distributed amongst the persons (Lord Hatton, Viscount Fanshaw and others) who hold divers parks and forests of the Crown as security for moneys lent to the late King: the said persons having now legally surrendered their interest therein back to the Crown. May 6 Warrant from Treasurer Southampton to the Clerk of the Signet for a Privy Seal for 357l. 4s. 9d. to Alderman Backwell, being 5½ per cent. on the sums of 5,514l. 4s. 11½d. and 981l. 10s. 7d. delivered by him to the Mint for the purpose of re-coinage between 1662, Sept. 26, and 1663, May 1. Same from same to the King's officers and the Customs Farmers to put the ship "Larke," on the English list ("in the list of free ships returned by His Majesty's collector inwards into the Exchequer Court according to the Navigation Act") and to give the owners a certificate accordingly: said ship being Dutch built but belonging to His Majesty and sold by order of the Duke of York, Lord High Admiral, amongst other of His Majesty's ships on the 26th Oct., 1663, being brought by John Taylor and by him assigned over to John Nutting. Money warrant for 5,000l. to Charles Coniers, of London, merchant, Nicholas Cutler of London, merchant, Thomas Nevill, of Clements Danes, and Alexander Westlake, of St. Andrews, Holborn: the same being agreed to be lent to them by the King in accordance with the terms of an indenture of covenants dated Jan. 28 last. May 10 Warrant from Treasurer Southampton to the Receipt for tallies of assignment to be levied from time to time upon the respective receivers and collectors of the subsidies for those counties assigned as securities to the city for their loan of 50,000l. for such sums as shall appear by the acquittances of the Chamberlain of London to be received by him from them: all to the end said receivers may have legal discharges [in the Exchequer]. May 10 Warrant from Treasurer Southampton to the Receipt for tallies to be levied for 25l. on William Denny, high collector of the monthly assessments for the Hundred of Blything, co. Suffolk, from 1647, March 25, and for 24l. 10s. 0d. on Francis Harvy, receiver of public moneys received for the militia in the Isle of Ely: same to be payable to Sir Thomas Ingram on his Privy Seal. Warrant from Treasurer Southampton to the Clerk of Signet attending, for a Privy Seal, in terms prefixed, for 150l. to Lodowick Carliell (Carlisle) for the arrears of his fee for the custody of the King's Lodge at Petersham, in the Great Park near Richmond: the said office having been surrendered 1663, April 10, by said Lodowick Carliell and James Carliell, his son, who had received a grant of same 1660, Sept. 27. May 19 Royal sign manual for 10,000l. out of the Dunkirk money in the Tower to Sir George Carteret for the Navy [victualling], same to be repaid back into that reserve and bank, from which it is now drawn, out of the 20,000l. which he is to receive for the service of the Navy in general. May 20 Money warrant for 491l. 9s. 2d. to Stephen Fox for the pay of the garrison of Gravesend blockhouse on Essex side, June 12 last to the 14th inst. Ibid.

Money warrant for 17,500l. to said Thomas Povie for three months' pay of Tangier from Feb. 4 last to the 4th inst., and also for 125l., being for the like quarter on the additional pay of 500l. per an. for same: to be by tallies on the Excise. Ibid, p. 116.
Warrant from Treasurer Southampton to the Auditor and Receiver of Crown Revenues in North Wales to allow and pay the several fees and salaries to judges as follow, viz., to Sir Job Charleton, the Chief Justice of Chester, as Chief Justice of the Council of the Marches of Wales at Ludlow, 100l. per an. for his place and 50l. per an. for his riding charges; and to Timothy Turner, Simon Degg and Robert Milward, three other judges, for their fees as judges of the said Council of the Marches 66l. 13s. 4d. each, together with the fee of 20l. per an. each for riding charges: which fees, &c., were heretofore paid out of the profits answered out of the Star Chamber fines set in the Court and Council of the said Marches, which jurisdiction has been taken away by Act of Parliament. Treasurer Southampton to the Excise Commissioners and Jo. Ball. Esq., Cashier General [of Excise] to observe the following arrangements in all future payments as appointed by His Majesty, viz.: to be paid yearly out of the country Excise 15.000l. for the Household, 70.500l. for the garrison of Tangier, and 61,200l. towards the pay of the Guards. "which in proporcon to those summes to each Receiver ought to be soe paid that each receipt may be equally accomodated for His Majesties service and whereas the Cofferer and the other 2 receivers have agreed though you admitt of one tally before another or for regulation of your accounts charge the same as entirely paid before yow begin another tally that this rule shall be kept betwixt them." May 26 Same for a quarter in advance to June 24 next to Sir William Swan, a gentleman of the Privy Chamber, on his ordinary of 20s. a day as Resident at Hamburg. Ibid.
May 26 Warrant from Treasurer Southampton to the Auditor and Receiver of the Duchy of Cornwall to pay the salary of 80l. per an. to John Catcher from 1660, August 14 (except 92l. 5s. 8d. received thereon): as by the Privy Seal of August 5 last. Early Entry Book V. p. 121.
Same from same to the Customs Farmers to pay tallies to be drawn on them by Sir George Carteret on the 467l. per month, ordered by a Privy Seal of Oct. 31 last to be paid to him for 12 months according to a contract in that behalf made with the victualler of the Navy. Ibid, p. 122.

May 30 Royal sign manual to Treasurer Southampton for the payment of an additional 500l. per an. to Sir Job Charleton, as Chief Justice of Chester, in order to his support and for his services, and 200l. a year to Mr. Milward, another judge of that Court: the 1,400l. which was ordered by a late warrant to be paid to Thomas Turner for secret service, having been paid to said Charleton and Milward. May 31 Warrant from Treasurer Southampton to the Customs Farmers and officers to permit the Earl of Drogheda to ship six horses for Ireland on payment of Customs for same. Ibid, X. p. 263.
Same from same to Francis Stevens, a Sergeant at Arms, to arrest Peter Enton and George Symonds, of Norwich, merchants, who were stopped with each of them a long cloak bag of silk behind them on horseback by Christopher Barret and Theodore Farrer, of Great Yarmouth, but who escaped after assaulting said Barret and Farrer.
