Warrant from Treasurer Southampton to the Customs Commissioners for their observance of an Order of Council of the 23rd ult. as follows:—"Upon informacon given to this board by the Commissioners of His Majesties Customes that there are lately eight shipps arrived in the port of Bristol laden with tobacco and six more there expected, the Custome whereof will amount as they conceive to about 12,000l., but that there is not at present ready money enough in that citty to discharge the said Custome, His Majesty taking the same into his princely consideracon together with the present scarcity of money and deadnes of trade did order" directions to be given to the Customs officers at Bristol to allow such time as they think necessary for payment of the Customs of the said ships, the merchants giving security: also for the like directions from time to time for the port of London or any other ports if it shall be found necessary. May 15 Warrant from Treasurer Southampton to the Customs Commissioners to permit Humphry Abdy, an inhabitant of Ireland, and a Member of Parliament of that country, to transport thither 135 oz. of plate, Custom free. Early Entry Book X. p. 79.
Lord Treasurer Southampton to Francis Molineux, sheriff of Notts, to hasten the payment of the portion of the 18 months' assessment due from the county of Notts, same having been assigned for the service of the Ordnance. "So that you are from time to time to make your payments into the Exchequer or unto Col. Legg, Lieut. of the Ordnance, or in case he make any assignments upon you for any part thereof [then you are] to pay the same and his acquittance will be a sufficient discharge: untill a considerable summe be paid [so] that a tally [may] be struck for your more formall discharge in the Exchequer. And you are upon all occasions to correspond with him [Legge] touching the same." Ibid, III. p. 290.
Same to the sheriffs of Montgomery, Cardigan, Pembroke, Radnor, Carmarthen, Brecknock and Glamorgan concerning their great remissness in transmitting the moneys upon the 18 months' assessment, no return at all thereof having been made hitherto: whereby the service of the Works, to which same are assigned, suffers. Recommends a speedy payment of all money in hand. Ibid, p. 292.
The like to the sheriffs of London and Middlesex, Kent, Essex, Southampton, Berks, Devon and Surrey complaining strongly of the like. "Before this His Majesty expected you should have paied into the Exchequer all the monyes due at Lady Day last which being assigned for publique occasions the failure of it is a very great disservice." Treasurer Southampton to Beaumont Dixy, of Market Bosworth, co. Leicester, sheriff of Leicester, in reply to a letter from him of the 3rd inst., concerning his refusal as Receiver General of the 18 months' assessment in Leicester town to take the receipts therefor tendered by the collector thereof because some of the money was the late usurper's coin.
