September 1602

Sept. 9. Original Despatch, Venetian Archives. 1093. Marin Cavalli, Venetian Ambassador in France, to the Doge and Senate.
They write from London that owing to the bad harvest the price of grain has gone up twenty-five per cent. In France the harvest has suffered from rain and wind.
There is no confirmation of the report that the Spanish have landed in Ireland; but instead it seems that, Earl of Tyrone is hard pressed by the Queen's troops; and, abandoned by most of his followers, he has taken refuge in the islands of Lough Erne, whence he sometimes makes a sally.
The Queen being aware of the preparations at Corunna, and thinking that they might be intended to harass Ireland, has sent troops and ordered her fleet to take up a position suitable for intercepting the Spanish succours.
Paris, 9th September 1602.

The Scottish Ambassador extraordinary has come here to congratulate the King on the discovery and punishment of Biron, and to thank his Majesty for the company of one hundred lances given, according to ancient custom, to the Prince of Scotland who shall be named by his father. All this with a view to securing the French support in the case of the death of the Queen of England.
