January 1524

1524. 26 Jan.
M. Re. Ac. d. Hist. Salazar. A. 30. f. 88.
616. The Prothonotary Caracciolo to the Emperor.
Things have greatly changed since Monsieur de Beaurain (fn. 1) left. Prospero Colonna has died ; the French have not retired from Italy as it was believed they had ; the want of money has become very embarrassing ; and the Viceroy of Naples has arrived.
Although the Duke of Bourbon has not a high reputation as a captain in the Italian army, the Viceroy of Naples, the Duke of Milan, and all the other captains are ready to obey his orders. The French army is strong and well disciplined ; it is, therefore, necessary that the Imperial army should be kept in the most effective state.
The Pope, Venice, Florence, Naples, and the other allied states are all poor, but they will all do what they can. The enterprise on Provence will be crowned with suçcess, but he and the King of England must continue the war against France with the greatest vigour, and send money wherewith to pay the army under the command of the Duke of Bourbon. —Milan, the 26th of January 1524.
Addressed : [Paper gone.]
Indorsed : "To the King. 1524. From Milan. Caracciolo. The 26th of January. Answered."
